    More than 7 years later...

Yup, it has been that long! The annual service is completed and the car passed its first California smog test. I was so happy driving her home from the dealer-- fast, zippy, and with a glorious sound from the engine :) I wish we wouldn't be so speed (and traffic) restricted here...

Thanks to my daughter for taking this shot on my iPhone :)

    June gloom...

It never fails. Large parts of California are always covered this time of year by a white blanket of moisture that makes everything look very mysterious from above.

YES ! so serene and peaceful in a strange way. Much preferred over the empty sky of the desert.

    Thanks Joost !

Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

I'm with you Enmanuel. Clear skies can get boring, but so can overcast days (which I don't like at all). I personally can't stand this June gloom weather and in my opinion it is even worse than cold weather. angry Do you miss the weather in DR?

Cool video Joost, it reminds me of the underside of big crashing waves. How are things with you? Are you planning to start flying again?

Thanks GG! Things are going pretty well tbh; a number of big decisions in my life atm which I had been procrastinating about and which were holding me back. Taking them down one by one and feeling more and more empowered by that.

Regarding flying... nope. I had my crash in May 2012 and it took me 18 months to fully recover. I did some tandem flights with a buddy of mine last year just to say farewell to the feeling of flying, and I noticed the fun was gone. The awe is still there, but it is overshadowed by the negative emotions. I have been involved a bit lately with providing instructions, and I still love doing that, so I will continue with that. On another front, I took some kite surfing lessons last year, and here as well, I found that there is some semi-rational fear when being physically attached to the kite. I'll see if I continue with that hobby or invest more in windsurfing, where I feel that I don't have that fear at all.

How about yourself? Obviously you are spending more than enough time in the air, but that is mostly professional I presume. What are your flying dreams? Any specific aircraft you would love to fly? What would you do (flying) if not professionally?

That is more like it Gnil. Sunshine mixed with clouds. A beauiful view you got there! kiss

Joost, I'm glad you are doing well, and I can imagine that there is a lot of fear associated with flying after your crash. It is good that you are exploring other options to find something you enjoy. If I wouldn't fly helicopters I wouldn't mind flying an airliner like a 747 long distance. I love being away from it all even if it is just for about 15+ hours ;) Our world is too beautiful to spend most of our time just in one area...

I do miss it sometimes, it was very unpredictable though. A morning could start with a sunny blue sky and change to a storm mid afternoon. But at least it had variety. I'll say this about living in the desert, cars stay clean forever !

There's nothing better than breakfast in front of the water, with a sea breeze. I've always wanted to visit the Seychelles, the pictures look stunning.

Raises hand.   Luxurious service but the cabin was a bit cramped, as one would expect, given the emphasis on speed over utility.  Flew both on the Air France and the British Air versions.

I think some of you might enjoy this, I ran into an article a long time ago about a Concorde memorabilia collector who had amounted quite a lot of items from the plane and it's service. He details his collection and then explains a dinner party he had with a Concorde theme where he actually served in the original Concorde plates, and tableware. I found it very interesting and I'm sure anyone who had flown in the plane would enjoy the trip down memory lane. Top two links are articles on his collection and the last two are his own personal blogs about the items and the dinner.

Once, from London to NY as an adolescent but to be honest, I didn't enjoy it very much (space was a bit tight and the sensation was not as pleasant as I thought it would be). Now I guess I should be happy I'm alive. Smiley

I like flying in the A380 a lot, very comfortable and quiet flights (had the pleasure a couple of times) but not sure how safe the A380 is, a bit too many (minor?) incidents over the past couple of years.

I mostly fly with the A330, A340 and A320 (mostly within Europe).

Scariest and hottest (A/C was broken) flight was (once, thank god) with a Tu-154 (I think). Never again.

Plus plenty of fuel fumes on take off in particular.

    That’s the reheat.

Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

    Concorde

Yes, all take offs were performed with reheat for safety reasons since this required only one performance calculation (instead of two: one with reheat, one without). To bring this into context, those four engines could produce almost half the thrust of an A380 !! Concorde could make the sun rise in the west ;)

Sadly, the crash in France was never the fault of the aircraft and I think grounding (and draining) all Concordes was unjustified. To make a very, very long story short, it was not the metal titanium strip on the runway lost by the Continental Airlines DC-10 that ultimately brought the aircraft down, but a long chain of bad decisions. Regardless, it was a tragedy on many levels for sure :(

    From this morning...

The view of the calm sea is always relaxing ;)  The air was smooth and you can still see some leftover marine layer on the horizon. The water, which looks so beautiful, is, of course, still far too cold for my liking.

Enmanuel, thank you for posting the Concorde links-- cool stuff! :)

Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

Returning briefly to the Concorde, one discovered the following website: https://www.heritageconcorde.com dedicated to that spectacular craft.  Amazingly, the technology appears quaint today, yet the plane remains aesthetically pleasing.  Originally looking for additional information on the floor system, which was mounted on rollers, to handle the longitudinal expansion of the airframe at Mach 2, due to atmospheric heating.   Had also forgotten that the initial Air France cabin was designed by Raymond Loewy.

Re: The moment I've been waiting for...

It was and still is a magnificent airplane. Thank you for posting the video link. Like someone said in one of the many Concorde documentaries: if airplanes had a soul Concorde is probably wondering why she has to sit in museums :( Also Concorde introduced so much new technology that is still state of the art and Airbus Industries evolved out of it.

CGX car nut and RC: it's so cool you got to fly Concorde! I can only imagine what the flight from LA to Sydney would be like in Concorde if it had that fuel range.
