    Ron (Houston):

I kind of think they will go back to 993 model which was all "S" models were wider than standard 911 regardless of 2 or 4.

I think that could prove a clever stunt as well with regard to selling more S's...

I think so too, and makes more sense this way.

I had the idea that the wider hips were assigned to the 4 and 4S models in the 997 lineup to generate more sales fr the 4wd model; a lot of people want the widest car.

A questions I have been wondering about for a few days now...

Typically, a car manufacturer starts up the production of a new model before a presentation to the press is made (so that it immediately has cars available for the dealers, press test drive etc...)

Someone recently made a factory visit?

(or do they close it down for the public?)

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

In my experience and knowledge of Porsche, they tend to start pre-production of their new models about two-three months before the car's release.

With the 2011 Cayenne, Porsche ceased production of the previous generation models in December 2009 in order to begin a three-month retooling process to recalibrate their factory's facilities for production of the new model. The Cayenne was revealed in March 2010, and we started seeing press test drives very soon after.

If the 991 will be presented in Frankfurt in September, then Porsche will start production of the vehicle around June or July [taking the factory upgrades into consideration] after they stop production of the current 997 models. This seems more appropriate, since Geneva is barely a month and a bit away and Zuffenhausen is still pushing 997s out.

I have visited the factory many times.  Sometimes, and this is rare, you can spot a new model heading out on a test drive.  Other times, and this has happened frequently, that as you are taking a factory tour, the guide will get a call that a "prototype" is arriving somewhere onsite, and he will stop the tour until the  new model is tucked away from public view.

That never made any sense to me. Why would you want a wider track and especially wider rear wheels on snow, presumably what the C4 and C4S are optimized? One would want the opposite (narrower wheels and tires for snow traction).

This always seemed to me like another misguided marketing stunt.

Interesting, in these 991cab pics you can clearly see the new headlight design of the 918 and Cayenne with the four LED technology. The headlights have stickers on top to mimic 991 headlights, just like in the rear, but you can still see the four leds:

This is actually an interesting story. According to press reports, the official introduction of the 991 is going to be at the Frankfurt Autoshow in September but according to our sources, first cars will be at german dealers around June/July, before the Autoshow. This is actual the usual time frame for new 911 introductions.

So if the 991 is going to be delivered to dealers over here around June/July, the pre-production should start around...now.

What many people don't know: Porsche can build the 997 and the 991 on the same production line, just how they please. So expect the 991 introduction shortly after 997 Black Edition production finishes, earliest in May 2011, latest in July 2011.

I also think that the official announcement regarding the 991 will be in March, latest early April.

Right, I was reffering to the design of the optics-leds inside not the actual outer shape of the headlights.

    Thank God!

I love the 918 lights shape -on the 918 that is-.

For the 911, round/oval headlights is the way to go. IMO, one of the points that will prevent any 996 model to become a classic(except maybe the 996 mk1 GT3) is the wrong shape of the headlights.

I don't believe cars will be sold to customers before the Frankfurt Motorshow.

Cars will be produced for Press Presentations and Drives but like in other new models they might be even camouflaged with black tape etc so as not reveal the totally the final shape.

This happened with the current model Cayenne and the Panamera too. Journalists drove the finished cars and photographed them but the shape and detailing were slightly disguised.

ya... Classic, not to mention the cheaper models (smaller SUV etc) are coming out, the one I will pay is the GT3 with PDK, money is everything and Porsche really needs that SmileySmiley

Haha Xandi, seems like Kreso once more was able to take a peek at something we aren't allowed to see yet.

Kreso, am I wrong when I say that the lights will resemble those of the 993 and the 997; more or less round when seen from direct front, but tilted a bit backward so they are in essence ovals?

Just this... Auto Bild renderings are very, very close to real thing. New tech means full LEDs maybe...

Thanks Kreso, that's a big reassurance; the autobild renderings show (imo) a nice evolution, taking it a step to the next level up from the 997. The headlights look very good, shapewise. Full LED vs Xenon... dont know what I prefer.

One more thing; the ugly turbo-look foglights on the prototypes are just cam, right? They are not hiding a hideous surprise for us I hope?

Thanks for the hints mate, much appreciated!  Smiley
