    996cal:

Can someone outline how the rear engine deck lid is going to open up?? It looks messy back there to me. It looks like the third rear brake light will rise when the rear engine lid is up. Any thoughts

Here's my interpretation. Looks like the little spoiler will come up wti the decklid, when the decklid is opened.

Good job.  I hope they won't put "PORSCHE" lettering like the panamera and the new Cayenne.

LOL, nothing at all. It's just that you would think that siblings (Porsche and Audi) would want to have different identities.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Nice job ResB, but if the 991 looks like that, it would be disappointing as it looses too much of it's identity and ends up being a hybrid of Porsche , AM and Audi

Guys, the 991 won't get an extreme design change, taillights are going to be 918 RSR-like and headlights will be 911-typical, not 918-like. Interior is going to be similar to Panamera/Cayenne with a certain 911 touch (whatever this means).

The 991 will also be slightly longer, it will offer more leg- and headroom in the rear and the proportions will be more masculine and "outlined" (whatever this means).

Engines: base engine will have 360-365 HP, S engine will have 400-405 HP.

A possible GTS version may start with 430 HP.

GT3 is rumored to have 450 HP, GT3 RS 460-480 HP.

Turbo will start with 530-540 HP.

    GT2 may hit 600 HP.

    Hope this helps.

More leg- and headroom in the rear is the last thing I need in a 911, the rest is okay.

Believe it or not the rear lights I placed on the back were from the 918, except I increased the depth and reduced the opacity, to let some of the original image to come through, which gives it an LED look I suppose.

Do you know if the GT cars will use the 9A1 engine or GT1 block?  If 9A1, do you know if they will make a true dry-sump version for the GT cars?

    Thanks RC!!

Now how (much better) does it drive?

i'm wondering if the 991 will be a giant improvement or an incremental one?

i remember an Autocar article covering the 997 and i think it was sub-titled 10 percent better -- though i just found a shorter version of the article and it said 10-15 percent better than the 996--

here it is for a blast from the past--

The 911 is a rear engined platform, that implies rear seats, and that is one of its atractiveness and characteristics, otherwise you'd just put the engine in the middle. So if its going to have rear seats, the more usable they are the better.

I recall that someone form Porsche already declared that they wil be only making one line of engines for the 911, and with their new DIF engine it made no sense now to keep making the GT1 block engine for the GT's only.

If it will be a dry-sump version of the DFI engine I don't know, but it will be used in racing so...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Found it! it was Wolfgang Dürheimer:

    Here is the quote:

But change is coming, even to the cars built by Porsche Motorsport, often seen as a brand within a brand. Ever since the first GT3 was built over a decade ago, these cars have been using the old racing engine, the indirect injection motor that can trace its origins back to the 911 GT1 Le Mans winner of 1998. But now that Porsche has an all-new direct injection flat-six in every other 911, Boxster and Cayman, the time has come for the old engine to take its final bow. "We don't need to replace it," concedes Dürheimer, "but we are business people and it doesn't make sense to have two entirely different generations of flat-six being built in house." He confirms the GT2 RS will be the last new Porsche fitted with the old engine. And while that will bring tears to the eyes of purists, I think we should at least wait to see what its replacement is like before lamenting its passing too much.

Thanks, Carlos!  I am not 100% convinced yet, since it seems we'll have a 4.0L GT3 RS Special Edition with the GT1 engine (but maybe not)...

You have a point, it makes a lot of sense that the GT3RS4.0 would use the GT1 block still Smiley

But it seems very likely that the 991 GT cars will now use the DFI engine... which is a good thing for all other 911 model buyers because if it is, it speaks good of the engine because it will need to stand up to use in racing, and that means that they trust the reliability and potential of their new DFI engine.

599 doesn't have the engine in the middle as well. Smiley

Carlos, the more usable you make the 911 rear seats, the bigger the 911 gets and the less you need cars like a Panamera Coupé for example. Smiley

OK, who's  6 year-old son or daughter has been writing nasty letters to Porsche about rear seat room??   Smiley

But... moving the 911 even slightly larger and more GT-ish would leave just a bit of room for a smaller, high performance mid-engine car... which was one of the rumours raised on what became the 918RSR thread.  Perhaps there is  a grand plan after all....

In my opinion, making the 911 a little bigger just means my son can sit at the back til 12 instead of 10, it is not a big deal.  He will graduate to the front seat anyway.  But a further increase in exterior dimension making 911 too GT-ish is a big deal.

Personally, I like the 2+2 more airy feel.  Tried Cayman but feel kind of cramped.
