    2010 or 2011 Cayman?

Well, our much-loved M Coupe has passed on to another owner who will use it sparingly as a weekend mistress.  Having now driven most of the Porsche lineup since April, wife and I are moving towards a Cayman S order (she is the main driver of any 2-seater we own).  The Cayman still best fits the pure sports car niche in the P-car range, and would be a nice complement to the S5.    We would get the Cayman S as PDK (mit paddles  Smiley ), most performance options ticked and most leather etc. options unticked.

Question is, with a major (?) update to the Cayman/Boxster  apparently on the way in late 2011, do we wait for the 2011 model or order a 2010?    Thoughts?

I would expect the next gen Cayman S to be launched around the same time as the next gen 911. If you can wait, I would wait if I were you

Next Cayman will be out for Model Year 2012 at earliest.  There is rumored to be a Cayman Clubsport coming out in several months that should be very interesting (lighter, 333hp, LSD, GT2 seats - similar to Boxster Spyder).  Other than this model or a used one, I would wait for the next model (though it will be a shared platform with Audi/VW for better or worse).

Someone in the huge 991 thread mentioned a rumour that the new Cayman would have more 911 sharing than now - consistent with the rumours of a new lower priced 2-seater range that would share more with VAG and sit below Boxster/Cayman.   Still, not much in these rumour scan be trusted yet...

    Re: 2010 or 2011 Cayman?

I guess it depends on the budget one wants to spend and when one wants to have a car - for me, a cayman is great car, I have driven the latest modell with PDK as a loaner (and I liked it)  and I am looking forward to the Cayman Clubsport rumour hopefully developing further into real life.

My thoughts in general would be, that I would get a cayman NOW, if I want to have one NOW - life is to short sometimes to wait for the next better bigger more sophisticated bla, bla, modell. By the way, we bought a Boxster (987, special edition) on the very day the dealer introduced the facelift modell - no regrets, sofar  - hope, this helps...

    Re: 2010 or 2011 Cayman?

Wait...if you can. If you can't wait or just don't want to wait, at least try to squeeze out a huge rebate from your local dealer or get a slightly used car for much less money. In Germany, there are some pretty sweet deals available for a Cayman S PDK, so this should be possible in other countries too.

Even now  you won't get a bean off any new Porsche here in the UK - and basic trade value only for your car so no incentives here! Smiley

    Re: 2010 or 2011 Cayman?

tell me , RC, what is this bold lettering "Wait" in your answer all about - is this just a "wait, there will be a new cayman out soon" or is this "wait, there will be an incredible fantastic new cayman out soon" ??? Smiley

Oh, I do like this...it is just like being given a gift with a statement "do not open before x-mas"...

Not a budget issue... just a model issue.  In general I'm with you as there is always a new model coming and if all you do is wait you never enjoy driving - at some point we all have to commit.  Waiting would also mean two summers without a sports car.... maybe hard to do.   The other approach is buy the last of the outgoing model, which has all the teething bugs worked out, and if you are really amazed at the new one, do a quick trade before too much depreciation has hit.   If you are disappointed in the new one, be smug that you made the right choice.  Smiley     I admit that part of the hesitation to wait is the inexorable trend for all new models to be a bit bigger, a bit heavier, and bit less pure...  this seems to be the hints re. the new 991 and I would worry that the Cayman would be given the same recipe.

End of lifecycle, not a good idea to buy now, unless you get a huge rebate to justify driving the "old" model. Just my opinion.

Same with the Turbo S: fantastic car but as soon as the 991 will be out, Turbo S buyers might regret it. Not that the Carrera model will be faster but according to the current specs, the 991 will be a highly refined 911 with many chassis/drivetrain improvements and even the 991 Carrera will get some of the goodies (as options) which are available optional for the 997 Turbo/Turbo S models right now. The 991 Turbo is going to be a beast, 0-100 kph in 3.0 seconds flat according to the preliminary specs, 0-200 kph "under 11 seconds".

I know, I know...if you always have to wait for the next model...bla bla bla but the Cayman/Boxster and the 911 are at their lifecyle end and personally, I would buy only the 997 GT3 RS or the 997 GT2 RS right now. Maybe the 997 Turbo S too if I'd lease it for two years only. To each his own I guess. Smiley

    Re: 2010 or 2011 Cayman?

RC, Porsche usually doesn't get it right from the first try Smiley

So the 991 facelift will be even more interesting. One could have fun with a heavy discounted "old" model until then.

Also these days it's risky to buy cars in the first two years of production (completely new models I mean). Two many issues. I hate to PAY yo be a beta tester...

    Active camber?

What does active camber mean??? That's a new concept to me!

    Active camber?

    That is so funny.

Just yesterday I was pondering alignment settings and thought to myself that it would be nice if there was a way to easily "toggle" between aggressive camber for the track and more docile camber for the road so as to not chew up the tires on the road.

Not sure what active camber is, actually never heard the term before, but now I am very curious Smiley

Many coilovers come with camber plates so that you can easily change camber at the track and return it for the drive home in a couple minutes.  Used to do it all the time with my 944 Turbo S.

Is it going to be a daily driver or weekend toy?  If the former, I'd get a nearly new Gen 2 now and keep it for ~3 years until the facelift of the next model.

If its a weekend car, then I'd get a letter of intent in to your OPC for the rumoured Club Sport

Definitely a daily  - my wife is the primary sports car driver during our ~8 months of non-snowy weather and our 2-seater is used for lots of local drives, short trips etc.    Club sport, if it is confirmed, sound interesting but as you suggest perhaps a bit less suitable as a DD.

I've ordered a 2010 Cayman for the simple reason that the cost to change figure in 18 months or 2 years time would be simply unjustifiable for me even if the 988? Cayman turns out to be significantly better.
