    Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

    Ferrari turns practical? That’s the
shock news from Maranello, where a shooting brake concept based on the 612 Scaglietti is being prepared for
the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The first result from a new, in-house styling team, the estate has been overseen by Fiat Group design boss and ex-Pininfarina head Lorenzo Ramaciotti. Although its name has not yet been confirmed, the two-door, V12 concept has been produced for two reasons: to see how far Ferrari can stretch its brand away from its traditional supercars, and to give the 612 Scaglietti a fitting send-off as the four-seat super coupé, launched in 2004, nears the end of its run.

“We know there can never be a Ferrari SUV,” one source insisted. “But we would like to find out what we can put the marque’s DNA into and still have it accepted as a Ferrari.” The replacement for the 612 Scaglietti is also imminent. Codenamed F151, the new two-door coupé will join Ferrari’s GranTurismo line-up to sit alongside the California, but it will be priced at around £230,000 – considerably more than the £143,870 currently charged for the drop-top.

Ferrari sources have described the forthcoming car as “more versatile”, hence why the designers are testing the water with this radical and roomier concept version of its predecessor. With the firm also ruling out a four-door saloon earlier this year, a fastback design for the next-generation GT makes the most sense.

Despite its revolutionary looks, the 612 Scaglietti concept car isn’t the first Ferrari wagon. The company has built plenty of one-offs for wealthy Middle Eastern and Asian buyers, including a 456 GT-based Pininfarina-bodied shooting brake in the early Nineties for the Sultan of Brunei.

At least that looks as if it has enough transport space to have some practical value.

So basically, they're finding out what the maximum amount of dilution is that they can put into it, whilst getting away with it.

I say, simple solution: shoot them, so they understand that they're not getting away with it Smiley

    Drastic solution...............................but effective. Smiley

It wouldn't fail to get the attention of MBA students when they came across it amongst their case studies.  Smiley

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

On the design front, the 612 successor will reportedly adopt a practical rear hatch and 458-inspired styling. We're not sure how prominent the hatch will be (or if even exists), but it sounds like the car will be more of a shooting brake and less of an awkward coupe.

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

Drop that design on the California chassis and they may have a minor success much like the M Coupe was.

...the only thing stopping you in all likelihood, is you!

I'll take a panamera over that hatchback M coupe

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

Haha, the idea by itself is all good and fine, but the execution will be critical.

To think that BMW will put out very innovative "i" sports cruisers... they will probably make this Ferarri hatch look like an old dog and that would hurt the brand. I think it's a stupid idea... The FIAT group has plenty of options to present a luxory sports hatch...

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

The idea of a Ferrari hatch could be the explanation why I could find the original rear window of this car under the window in the camouflage of the rear on this car: http://www.autowereld.com/spyshots/detail.asp?artikel=10270&artikelen=Ferrari%20612%20Scaglietti

That could be because the camouflage rear window isn't really camouflage but the real window. And on this prototype it looks really hatch-like...

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

Maybe that will give the 612 the push it needs.

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

good catch BMH, that is a very strange looking mule. Looks very hatch like in the rear... the angle of the rear glass is definitely hatch like.

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

    Rumoured specs :

    6,3l V12

    670HP

    AWD

    7-speed DCT

    From F-chat :

I was presented the car this past week at the factory. Looks fantastic in the flesh. Size is same as 612. Interior roomy with excellent finishing and many new touches. Very comfortable in back as well. A true 2+2. And with the 4x4 and new transmission, this is one Ferrari I can't wait to take delivery of and drive day in and day out!

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

Too sad you can't really see the whole rear end of the car on this picture. Are there more shots?

it looks huge. and the camo is just ridiculous.

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

but i'd say the front looks more 458 than california to me.

Re: Ferrari estate brakes with tradition

Looks like a huge Z3 Coupé to me.

Not really. I love the Z Coupé, but this Ferrari looks like a bloated Z on steroids. Smiley

The front bumper looks more California-like to me but I doubt that the car will be too similar to other existing Ferrari-models.
