On sunday I am going to a local car auction. They have a grey Dino to sell . I wonder what the prices are at the moment ?

( BTW , on the presentation of the auction, the car is listed under Fiat and not Ferrari )

Before you are tempted to bid on it, make sure you know what are letting yourself in for as there was a separate model which really was called the Fiat DIno. It's not in the same league as the Ferrari Dino.

Exactly.  As you can see , it is what I discovered .

I guess if you have not already seen this website Ian, you'll like it....lots. :)

    Great site

great for comparison among the makes. The 512 TR stands out as the most graceful and sleek of all the f cars.

    Re: New toy

Great website ResB   That is a very impressive collection. I love the Miura SV.

    Re: New toy

A few progress pic's. The suspension has been stripped down and anew bushes are being fitted front and rear. The shock absorbers and springs are all fine so require no work. The wishbones looked untidy so they've been shotblasted and powder coated and now look virtually brand new.

The cam covers came off to investigate the weaping oil. As expected it was simply the gaskets which had become saturated and started to break up so a new set are being fitted. The valve clearances have all been checked and amazingly only one was out of tolerance and I've ordered new shims so it can be correctly adjusted. The carb's are being cleaned and set up by an "old school" specialist. The cams themselves and timing chain are all in great shape and the engine is pretty clean as you can see. It will receive a routine service (plugs, oil and filter change etc).

The dash has been removed for retrimming and the front screen taken out in readiness for when the car goes to the paint shop.

There are a few things I'm doing for a belt and braces approach whilst the car is in this state of disassembly and things are easier to access. Because I've had the radiator recored and refurb'ed I've decided to fit a new set of water hoses. I've also decided to fit an upgraded alternator as the original didn't have a built in regulator. Magnetti Marelli now offer a replacement that does have a regulator and is more dependable.

There is localised surfacecorrossion on areas of the chassis frame that will be cleaned and repainted with a rust inhibitor like Dinitrol.

Overall things are going well with no nasty surprises and the car is generally in excellent shape I'm pleased to say.

Those won't be forthcoming as a) I'm not an American and therefore b) I've no intention of getting it up to Pebble Beach "far better than it ever left the factory" standard Smiley This car will be driven Tom Smiley

    Re: New toy

Banged to rights there I think

I only heard they'd been repainted after the work was done but in fairness I'm pleased with the outcome and it wasn't expensive to do. Now..... what else can I have repainted and polished under there

Oh no i spot A-pillar rust where the window sits... hopefully you will that taken care of, there's NOTHING worse than the rust cancer. I just concluded my mercedes is beyond repair due to extensive frame rust... brakes my heart but she is for sale as parts or whole...

It's great to see you putting money into the right places

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

    Re: New toy

I believe you are smart to keep meticulous records of the refurbishing of the car. For each pound you have spent I am confident you will get back double or triple when and if you sell the car.

    Re: New toy

ISUK, I love rebuilds like these! Did they reinforce the wishbones? I see they welded on new plates to fill the voids.

    Keep the pictures coming!

    Re: New toy

    ISUK,

I am sure you have thought of this already but make sure you get the underside fully stripped and resealed as part as the paint job.

    Best of luck and fun,

    Off enjoying my car...

    Re: New toy

Thanks for the all interest. It's proving to be an enjoyable project and I'm pleased with how it's going thus far.

    Atzporsche,

The small patch of rust on the windscreen frame is just localised surface corrosion and will be dealt with during the repaint. I'm glad I decided to have the screen pulled though or this could have deteriorated almost unseen over time.

    Nick,

We are keeping a good photographic record both for my benefit for future resale and also for the dealer who wants to show case what they can do for other potential customers. They've been great in terms of giving me quite a few "free" labour hours on the car and also in terms of a much reduced labour rate as it's a learning curve for them as well and they want to use the project to work out the viability of such work.

    Mike,

My before and after pics of the wishbones were a little misleading. The before pics show the rear wishbones whilst the after show the front which have more strengthening on them.

    Thomas,

The underside of the car is in really good condition so won't need stripped. It will get a coating of Waxoyl, or equivalent, in any vulnerable areas though. It won't be driven when there is salt on the roads here over winter anyway so should be fine.

I'll post more pics when I get them.

Ahhh, I see they are totally different. Just had a quick gander. When will she be back on the road?

    Re: New toy

If everything goes to plan I should get her back in mid December.

    Update.....

My dash is back for the trim shop and is now covered in the correct "mousehair" material which is a forerunner of alcantara I think.

    Re: New toy

I've not seen it in person but hope to do so on Friday. The material feels like velvet I'm told.

I'm not sure who the original manufacturer is Tom but this is where I bought it from www.superformance.co.uk/a-246/fittings.htm

The front suspension has been built back up and the rear is in progress. The car has to be made mobile (even if that only means it can be pushed) as it's going into the paint shop on Monday   Some of the new glass arrived today and the new windshield and side windows should arrive within 3 weeks.

The new set of wheels arrived on Friday. I've gone for the Campagnola wheels which were an optional style available for the 246. I think they look more in keeping with the 70's look of the car than the standard fit Cromodora wheels. They are also slightly wider so improve the stance visually.

    1288805475052SDC12955.JPG

The car came without an owners handbook pack but thanks to some intensive research on the internet I've tracked down a set from specialist motoring literature dealers in Holland and Poland and got an exact replica leather wallet to keep them in from a UK specialist.

thanks for the link, they are definitely just the middlemen on that.

You are moving quickly on these many little items.

    Re: New toy

Having done a bit more investigation Tom it appears that mousehair is actually moquette fabric. Here is another supplier www.automobiletrim.com/moquette-fabric.html

    Re: New toy

Thanks easy. I never envisaged doing quite so much work on the car when I first bought it but as with any older car that hasn't had a recent restoration you inevitably run across more things as you start taking it apart. I've just taken the view that whilst the car is being stripped down for some of the planned work it's crazy to defer any other items that can be easily accessed just now such as the alternator, wiring loom, dash retrim etc. I'd have effectively had to pay for the strip down labour again at a future date to gain access to these parts so I've consoled myself with the thought I've actually saved money in the long term. I'm still having trouble trying to believe it though

Hopefully the finished car will make it all worthwhile.

    Re: New toy

Do it once, do it right

You will have to let me know what you think of this mousehair when you have it in the car and drive for a while. Whether it is something that belongs in there or not - if you know what I am getting at.

I will some day be doing mine over and had thought of using alcantara until I heard negative things about it. I would use this stuff on the dash for the elimination of glare vs. using leather.

On such an old and special car i think these little details are what really make the whole thing even more meaningful.
