The specs are fantasy for the moment.  Doubt whatever tune Lotus uses is going to put that much torque down low in the rev band.  Don't think it will be a problem for the Esprit.  I agree that a naturally aspirated motor is preferred, but I cannot conclude off the bat that the Esprit will have major traction problems.

Fantasy or not, it's not very hard to imagine what kind of torque a supercharged 5 liter engine is capable of delivering. I mean, by comparison, the mclaren has a tiny 3.8 liter turbo-charged engine and it develops max torque of 600 nm at just 3000 rpms ! (and 540 Nm, the torque a NA 5.2 liter V10 develops at 6500 rpm, is available at just 2000 rpms on the macca) And that is huge too.

Surplus torque is not a problem in an age of ASC and E-GAS systems being combined to provide launch control.

Sorry, actually it is just 480 nm from 2000 rpm, I wrongly remembered that it has 90% of max torque (600 Nm) from those revs, but now I reread the specs and it was 80% not 90 %...Smiley

mariusv:Oh and supercharging ? That is ridiculous, this is not a freaking muscle car ! I mean, all you get by adding the charger is (besides straight line speed, which no one really cares about) uncontrollable tire slip...

Why would adding a supercharger result uncontrollable tire slip, as a matter of course?

Because that's what happens when you have 720 nm (and from low rpm) at the rear wheels...

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

It sure beats spontaneous combustion .... a la the Ferrari 458.

Re: Lotus at Paris Auto Salon

Just give me the esprit, I don't really care about the others...except maybe the elite :D That car looks like an aston db9/ferrari california killer. Too bad it's coming in 2015 ! By then, it will probably look dated, and it will have to compete with fresh new aston and ferrari models. Ouch, what a terrible marketing strategy lotus ! Showing the esprit and the elan, and maybe the elise, would have more than sufficed to put "Lotus back on the map", as Dany Bahar puts it. I think they're trying way too much, there was simply no need to show all these models at once ! Also, they're aiming too high, they want to compete on the sportscar/supercar market (represented by ferrari, lambo, porsche, mclaren) as well as on the luxury GT/4 door coupe market (represented by aston, porsche), I don't think that's gonna work for such a small company like lotus. What they need to do is to focus on a niche (just like mclaren), which best suits the brand character/history, aka the sportscar niche, and try to be the best in that niche, otherwise they're end up being not so great (or maybe terrible) on either niche and just, well, dissapear.

The Elite will come in 2014. I'm sure that if it should look dated by then, compared to the competition (which I doubt it will), Lotus will change a few design lines. Don't forget that these are only prototypes. They can do whatever they want with those in the years to come. Only the future will tell whether Lotus have overreached themselves.

I'm with you on this.  I think Lotus will fine tune these prototypes a little bit before production begins.  That's why they are called prototypes, correct.Smiley   The Esprit will sell well in this class, if they price it wisely.
