Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

A great day for Spain in Motorcycling!

    - Jorge Lorenzo wins the MotoGP World Championship today, with still three races to go,

    - Toni Elias wins today the Moto2 World Championship as well,

    - and the 125cc category is currently lead 1-2-3 by three spaniards.

Here is Jorge Lorenzo's history, amazing talent, he is the next generation Rossi IMO! Smiley

Jorge Lorenzo: 2010 MotoGP World Champion

Jorge Lorenzo’s route to MotoGP glory has been paved with record-breaking achievements, and first began with an encounter with minicross competitions aged just three. Lorenzo competed in this format in addition to trial, minimoto and junior motocross in his native Mallorca over the next few years, then followed up a 50cc Copa Aprilia title by entering the Spanish Championship with special permission, aged just thirteen.

Setting a record unlikely to ever be broken, Lorenzo subsequently became the youngest ever rider to enter a World Championship race. Turning fifteen – the minimum age for Grand Prix participation back then - on the second day of practice for the 2002 Spanish race at Jerez, he made his debut onboard a Derbi 125cc at a track where he would enjoy much success over the next few years.

In just his second season he took his first Grand Prix victory at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where his impressive “round the outside” overtaking manoeuvre on Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa won him the nickname “Por Fuera”. In 2004 he sealed a further three triumphs, before making the move up to the 250cc category a year later and taking four poles and six podiums in his maiden season.

2006 was to be the coming-of-age year for the Mallorcan, who switched to Aprilia machinery and immediately became the favourite for the World Championship. He justified the hype with an impressive eight victories, equalling the pole position record in the process with ten, and lifting the title in an emotional final race of the year at Valencia.

Another dominant year in 2007 saw Lorenzo retaining the quarter-litre title, with all nine of his victories coming from pole. At just twenty years old, he was a two-time 250cc World Champion and took on his biggest challenge to date by signing for the Yamaha factory team in MotoGP alongside Valentino Rossi.

Lorenzo made an immediate impact in the premier class with a stunning first five races. He took pole on his debut - becoming the first man to do so since Max Biaggi ten years previously - and finished second in an astounding performance in Qatar. He followed up the feat with pole at the next two races, becoming the first rider to go ‘three from three’ in his rookie season and turning both top spots into podium finishes.

Unfortunately his debut MotoGP season in 2008 was also marred by a few big crashes and injuries, including two broken ankles in China that eventually forced the debutant out of action for his home race in Catalunya. However he regained his fitness and confidence in the latter part of the season, and picked up the pace to finish fourth overall and become Rookie of the Year.

Lorenzo went from strength to strength last year, pushing his colleague and fierce rival Rossi all the way for the title. Their battle at Catalunya was a season highlight, and Lorenzo picked up four wins as part of a 12-podium haul for the year, with five pole positions as well. Ultimately he was unable to wrest the title from Rossi’s grip, but his challenge was becoming ever stronger.

2010 has seen Lorenzo’s star rise even further, and he was finally able to shake off the ‘inconsistent’ tag by scoring podium finishes in the first twelve races of the season, winning seven of them in the process. He has taken pole on six occasions this season, and qualified on the front row of the grid for every race except one. Still aged just 23, he becomes only the second World Champion from Spain in the premier class after Alex Crivillé, and having signed with the factory Yamaha team for two more seasons is a guarantee to be challenging for more honours in the years to come.

Re: Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

    I'm happy for Lorenzo too.

A genuine talent the new champion, unlike IMO the recent  previous "non-Rossi champions", Hayden and Stoner who, although competent riders, don't have that "something" that a champion must have.

Now that Lorenzo has secured the title and is free to take more risks and Rossi seems to be fit again, let's enjoy their battles in the last 3 races.

Toni Elias, will he be back in MotoGP next year?

Spain must be congratulated for investing so much in sport and most important in a great diversity of disciplines, from football and basketball to cycling, tennis and motorsport . It's good for the culture of young people and fantastic for the prestige of the country. Smiley

Spain is a real motorcycle nation . The enthusiasm for the motor bike sports must be one of the highest of all countries

Great you have everybody in top positions.... even if I  favor Lüthy in the Moto2

Re: Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

I could not agree more about Hayden and Stoner, Rossi is on another level of "Champion". Lorenzo is promising to be on of the great ones, those that have that raw natural talent for riding, like Rainey, Rossi, etc

And just like you say, now that Rossi is fit again, with Lorenzo now maybe we can see epic battles like Schwantz vs Rainey!target.gif

That I know of, Toni Elias jump to MotoGp is uncertain, there is rumors of dooing it in a Suzuki.

Spain is in a "Golden Age" in sport right now, frankly I don't know why, I think maybe  a lot of luck that certain talent figures in diferent disciplines have appeared on the same time  In motorcycling though its what Gnil rightly says, motorcycling is huge here, more so than anyother country I know, you see sportbikes everywere here and more passion for them, so its only normal that having such a big base to draw riders from, that Spain is so successful in competition.

Congrats 2 Jorge , but without the heavy accidents of Rossi whilst Racing or while he was motocrossing where he was injured sevearely, I doubt it would have been such a walkthrough!

In the last races Vale showed again his great skills, and I assume that he'll work out fine whith his new challenge...the motoGP-title with Ducati Corsa next season!

Anyways, Lorenzo is a great driver / biker and champion, and he rode a perfect sesaon (whith Valentino missing a few races), all the other opponents (Stoner & Pedrosa) were to inconsistent & could'nt keep his pace.

I also agree on your opinion about the skills of Stoner & especially Nicky Hayden, who will get bis ass kicked by Vale next season.

Also I'm looking forward to the battle between Ben Spies & Jorge Lorenzo, evenmore, as both are well know to be exceptionel drivers but NO testdrivers who can develop a bike (what is another perfect skill of Valention)

Re: Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

     I agree on that too.

Re: Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

Congrats to Jorge! He found consistency this year that had been lacking in previous seasons - no stupid mistakes. Lets not forget Laguna Seca a few years ago when he broke both of his legs (feet?)...

Rossi is the champion of champions. There is a willfulness to his riding - its almost like he's just toying with the other riders. That said the Ducati is notoriously difficult to get set up, but if anyone can do it he can.

Honorably mention to Spies - this kid really has it as well, but in a calm, calculating, Schumi-like package. He makes very few "dumb" mistakes and takes very few chances, but is faaaaasssst. Should be fun to watch he and Lorenzo on the same bike next year. My fear is that it will end in tears for someone, neither of those guys will give up easily.

Re: Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

I think  Rossi's height at 1.80m is a great complement to his natural ability in that it helps him overcome more the forces of the top category bike. This is part of the reason IMO that Dani Pedrosa at 1.60m and 51kgs is not as successful in MotoGP as he could have been.

Re: Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

Pedrosa absolutely dominated the 250cc and 125cc in a way that Rossi himself wasn't able to do, he'd jump to the category and instantly start winning without even the need for adaptation period, he was the most promising rising rider in ages. But when he made the natural jump to MotoGP he had difficulties adapting to the MotoGP bike because of his size, and even though this year he was able to challenge Lorenzo for the title until he fractured his clavicle, I don't think he can perform to his fullest potential in MotoGP due to that size handicap you mention, he is a really small and light guy. Still the bikes evolve and every year they become easier and easier to handle (imagine Pedrosa in the 500cc 2-stroke) so that will play to his favor and he is still young and incredibly talented. He is also a very good hearted, shy and humble guy, very different than Lorenzo and Rossi in character, though that makes his less agressive of a rider.

    @ JesseBank +1

    nothing 2 ad.

I predict, that the last 3 races will provide us with great fun, breathtaking battles and...VALE winning

Let's see if Yamaha is leting Valentino move over directly after the last race of the season to test the new Ducati Corsa-bike for 2011 (as Ducati did with Casey and Honda)?! I hope, that they "thank Vale for his 46 victories" he contributed to their race-legacy...

Someone could say that Rossi crashed because of the pressure from Lorenzo. Not of course at that particular moment in Mugello, but over the current season. Moreover, Lorenzo was leading the championship anyway, when Rossi crashed.

     I agree completely Smiley

Re: Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Champion! & Toni Elias Moto2 Champion

@ reginos It's true that Jorge put huge pressure on Vale, but keep in mind, that he was seriously injured (by his own fault) riding a mx-bike at the beginning of this years season, which is still affecting his fitness!

As I stated already it will be interesting to see how (and if ?!) Lorenzo and Spies are going to bring further developments to the Yamaha R1 and how long Rossi will need time to get accustomised to Ducati...

BTW: my mind is not totaly biased towards Rossi, Jorge is the best champ for this years season, as he was by far (have a look at the championship by now) the best, quickest & most reliable biker out there...*still Rossi is the best *
