    Re: Porsche in F1?

M POWER FTW. But yea porsche and mercedes too make amazing engines. I think it would be great for porsche to supply engines for F1 racing.

    --

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

    Re: Porsche in F1?

I'm all for supplying the engines. Porsche know that and could benefit a lot . Having a complete team would be a bad idea, too risky, too costly .

But I'd like to see Porsche go back  and invest into the 24 heures du Mans and similar events.

    Re: Porsche in F1?

I do not see Porsche entering F1...They have not build a F1 engine in what 25 years. The investment in engine technology alone and the steep learning curve puts Porsche at a distinct disadvantage. I'd rather see them focus on GT category which is part of their core compentency.

100% in agreement. It's what I have been trying to say.... unsuccessfully.

Unfortunately, I suspect that this decision (if taken) has more to do with VAG , than it does Porsche.

    Re: Porsche in F1?

I believe a substantial portion of F1 costs are paid for by sponsors. However, to get the sponsors your program must be taken seriously. The Porsche brand would have considerable credibility.

Where factory teams are concerned, that factory is generally the main sponsor.
By hanging its name on an F1 race car, a car manufacturer is the one with most to lose if things do not go well, so it has to absolutely commit itself to the venture.

    Re: Porsche in F1?

I could live with both scenarios but have to agree with Spyderidol that generally Porsche can excel more in sportscar racing, not only due to its history but also due to the nature of the sport and potential transfer to serial production.

F1, as entertaining as it is this season, is more about marketing than engineering in my eyes to the average viewer. Question is, which company, Audi or Porsche, would best utilize that potential to their benefit?

    Re: Porsche in F1?

Porsche will not return to F1 (news from FAZ, a very good german newspaper)

Mr. Piech himself declined the return.

    Re: Porsche in F1?

Very interesting article. Mentions that Piech declined the acquisition of Red Bull F1 Race last minute two years ago. Furthermore VW group intents to compete in WRC. Finally Audi is to race Porsche at LeMans. Can not wait for last to happen.

    Re: Porsche in F1?

They should put Porsche in Le Mans and Audi with Porsche engine in F1...

    Re: Porsche in F1?

As much as I would love to see Porsche back at LeMans, it will put the brand at the same level as Audi. That can not be good.

Piech clearly stated that no VW group brand is going to race F1 or supply engines to any F1 team. Apparently  McLaren and Red Bull had ask for some sort of cooperation.

Le Mans more likely than F1 for Porsche - boss

Does Porsche really need permission as to where and when they decide to race as a factory?? I think its time to see Porsche at Le Mans racing with a factory team every year for the next 20 years. Been keeping everyone waiting since 1998 its about time. Spyderidol you think there is a chance the 918 RSR will be at this years Nurburgring 24 hr? I heard reports that ir will be racing there even though it has been said in one of your post  that we wont see it until 2012. I dont see why Porsche would wait a year later to race it. The GT3 R Hybrid was raced pretty quickly and the ALMS said it is welcome to race anytime. I really think we will see it somewhere this year.

    Re: Porsche in F1?

There are a lot of mixed messages out there concerning the 918 RSR. However, reading into what Hartmut Kristen said, it seams that the 918 will only race in 2012.Here is the direct quote from Excellence magazine:

    — Porsche will race the GT3 R Hybrid in 2011, as it develops the 918 RSR.

Given the above, i think that it is quite reasonable to assume that we will only see this car in 2012. However.........nothing is beyond impossible, and so I wouldn't fall backwards if we saw this car debut towards the end of 2011.

    Re: Porsche in F1?

Spyderidol, just read Porsche CEO said they are looking to race the 918 RSR in 2011.
