    New toy

I took my own advice that I gave to Nick in another thread and have bought this 1972 Dino 246GT. It's only done 43,000 fully documented miles and is in very good overall condition. I'll be getting some work done on it before I start to use it but am looking forward to tinkering with it over time.

    Some interior pix please.

    Re: New toy

never liked the dino, but I do like the garage and courtyard pictured. Enjoy it Iain.

Why not do the work yourself and learn to enjoy that side of the hobby.

    Re: New toy

     What a beautiful shape! Congrats

    Re: New toy

I like the Dine, its a classy little thing. Enjoy it Lain ! post some pics of the interior and side by side with the 458, that should make for some good wallpaper

    Re: New toy

    Great car, many congrats, Iain.

The Dino is one of the great designs of Ferrari, a car that really deserves the Ferrari name and crest, though it was not allowed to wear either.

    Re: New toy

Like many examples nowadays Stefan my car has been adorned with a cavalino on the rear panel and on the horn push. I'll change the horn push for the correct Dino one and will look at the possibility of removing the cavalino as I'd like to return it to the way it left the factory.

The interior is finished in the original vinyl trim which is rare these days as most cars have had leather fitted at some point.

Amazing! Love the shape. How does it drive?

My compliments! Please make it immaculate and cherish it.

A timeless design by Pininfarina and the first mid-engined road car by Ferrari.

We can see how tyre technology has evolved. Balloon tyres on small diameter wheels, then.

Gorgeous car, congrats!   Also by incident an appropriate tribute to Tony Curtis who drove a same car in the TV show "The Persuaders"...

Absolutely Smiley  Most experts appear to agree that these cars will rise in value by 50% over the next 18-24 months in the UK so longer term the prospects are even better.

     WOW, that is gorgeous!

    Iain, terrific find.

Now that Nick points it out, how did you find one in such great state?. Also this car totally separates you from the usual sportscar owner Smiley

     WOW, that is gorgeous!

    Iain, terrific find.

I looked at 3 cars Nick. One was fairly tidy but had a full (and costly) respray a little over a year ago but it wasn't a great job as the paint shop hadn't removed the glass. They hadn't taken enough care with shut lines either so overall it was less than pleasing. It had some other issues as well including missing service history from it's early years and had also done another 30k miles more than the car I've bought. The second car I went to see was priced at the same level, same year and same miles as the one I've bought but was truly scruffy upon close inspection and had a very poor repaint and was fitted with fibre glass inner front wheel arches Smiley There were numerous other issues with it as well.

The car I've bought has had extensive restoration work carried out on it around 10 years ago when it was bought by the owner of a car dealership chain. He insisted on any panels showing signs of age/rust be replaced with brand new original steel items and this has left the body in great shape. He also had the interior retrimmed in the correct, original heat seamed vinyl and that also is in great shape. The paintwork is excellent with only a very minor section of bubbling around the left rear wheel arch so I'll have that taken care of.

My dealer is going to do a thorough safety related overhaul of the braking system and also check and replace the fuel lines if necessary. I've ordered a bunch of cosmetic items to enhance the car and I'll do a full detail on it as I've recently invested in a new DA polisher which is excellent and gives a great finish to the paintwork.

    Re: New toy

     You did your homework.

    I am not surprised.

Enjoy and savior the time in it. Not many people on this planet will be able to experience the pleasure of owning and driving a Dino.

Congratulations  - a great addition to your stable Smiley

    Re: New toy

It's great to be able to buy older cars. I find the history and great engineering to be just fascinating!! Congrats, on getting this car, doing homework and putting the money in to safe it. Also glad to hear that you will drive it!

I dunno about price here, but I love buying older cars at a fraction of the costs of a new one and being able to source parts over time... It makes owning a car so much more personal and fun. Seeing as your beauty will rise in value makes it even easier to put some money into. I have now done (marginal) profits on my last 3 cars, and it feels so much better letting go.

Please keep us posted, and also more pics please.

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)

    Re: New toy

Congratulations...one of my all time favorites. Photos don't really do it justice, you have to see it in person...it's soo low and small, a real jewel

    Re: New toy

    Iain,

congratulations on your new toy. Looks magnificent and adds a nice touch to your selection of contemporary cars.

I´d also be inclined to remove the unappropriate Ferrari badges.

    Re: New toy

All Ferrari badging apart from the rear cavalino (which is fixed through the rear panel and will leave holes) is coming off Ferdie

    Re: New toy

    speechless here.

    That is a gem.

    Re: New toy

My dealer is sending their covered truck to collect the car tomorrow from the Ferrari specialist I've bought  the car from. It will go back to their workshop for a health check and I'm going down there to start detailing it later this week. I've ordered a few new trim items for it and the first of these arrived today

It's amazing just how many items are still available for a 38 year old car and there are a few really good specialist suppliers in this field who are very helpful. Unfortunately the owners handbook pack has gone walkabout for this particular car but I've sourced a replica leather wallet to hold them all in which arrived today and is a flawless copy of the original. I've also sourced some of the original manuals via the net. It's going to be fun bringing the car up to a good standard.

    Re: New toy

Many congrats ISUK, gorgeous looking car indeed
