The starting model seems it will be a light pressure turbo with a smaller 4C engine, but the range will also include a 6C 4 liter and the "real" turbo of course.
The pressure is mounting on manufacturers to reduce emissions and fuel consumption in the EU and the USA with heavy penalties. It's time for engineers to innovate in both engine and body design.

exactly my thoughts as well - big manufacturer are forced to bring down the Fleet CO2 figure hence you see all sorts of "funny" or actually sad developments like with Aston Martin & toyota or a 4 cyl 911.... - maybe we all have to buy one last big displacement car before they are all gone. Evo wrote already about the death of the naturally aspirated engine...

4 cilinder engince on the 991? I love Porsche but this would be something I may not be able to accept from them, and like me I think many many people so either I think this is complete bogus or if true the Porsche should really really think that though... but personally I find it so unbeliebable that it think its just a rumor to sell magazines.

btw, the engine is already set for next Boxster, Cayman and new small roadster. So the remaining question is will Porsche make an entry level 991 or not. Heard that the 991 will be introduced in S and RS variant in Frankfurt 2011, so chances are there will be a new base 991 with a turbo flat foure below the base NA flat six..

Note that this is just a rumor as of now : RS will be a new trim above S but not a lightweight variant. I cannot confirm this.
On another note, does anyone have any factory info about the 991 conv : will it have canvas top or folding hardtop ?

And for all people wanting to have a faster car then the 'normal' 6 cylinder , at a cheaper price, as a small chip tuning on a turbo engine does marvels. If that base model has 340 HP, it will go up to 400 HP easily

I think a Flat-4 in the 991 just makes it more likely that we'll see a Flat-8 in the next GT3. The 9A1 motor was built to be modular with many different configurations and cylinders...

335PS from light turbo 4C 2.2-2.3l
375PS from NA 6C 3.7l
415PS from NA 6C 4.0l
Something is wrong with your assumption(or with press assumption and math)...
Why?
Imagine state of the art 2.3L 4cylinder boxer engine with single low pressure turbo. Even with DFI and Porsche magic there is a realistic figure of around 250ps as max. possible with LOW pressure turbo. For 340ps you will need at least 1.3bar with 2.3L-2.5L 4C DFI single turbo engine. Look at current most powerfull DFI 2.5L engine-Audi's 2.5TFSI 5C from TT RS. It is 340ps/450Nm with single(big!) turbo(1.2bar with big intercooler).

You maybe right mentioning the Audi and considering BMW's future 2lt 4C at 245PS, but whatever the final configuration I don't expect less than 335PS to give the heavier(?) 991 at least acceptable performance for a 911.

um, this would be excellent as you as a customer have the option to get the base model with fuel economy and price savings, or if you have to have the 6C then you have really nice options of the 3.7 or 4.0 (almost GT3 hp with probably more torque being a 4.0), I except the 4.0 will be a fast car!
however why would you not buy the 4C, think about it, it should be lighter so handle potentially better and because it's factory turbo will have easy access to more tuning potential to make it quicker than the 4.0! So cheaper, faster, and lighter (potentially). Probably see Stage1,2,3 kits out within the year after introduction, 500hp stage 4 would be nice!
Of course you sacrifice the traditional boxer 6C feel of a 911, and sound too..
Anyway I think it's a win/win, as a client you have all options.. plus who knows a flat 8 in the GT3 that revs to 8-9k, wouldn't that be amazing options..

I thought Porsche was developing a variant of 4C engine that was going to be used by VW and Audi for entry level Boxster. Definitely would not consider the 4C engine as option I'd select in a 911.

no qualms on a smaller C engine on boxster... but anything less than 6C on a 911 is questionable business strategy.... my 2 cents.

right on... for Porsche owners, the last thing we want is for Porsche to go downline. if Porsche comes out with a new model below the Boxster, I will be.... 
and most probably stop playing Porsche cars for good.
