    New BMW 550i test results

    0-100 kph in 5.0 seconds

    0-200 kph in 16.7 seconds

For a 70000 EUR (base price incl. 19% german VAT) sedan not bad at all.

This also gives us a little hint of what to expect from the upcoming new M5.

This performance is on par with M3 Smiley

I get 15% rebate on a new 550i from my local dealer. Do I get the same rebate for an Alpina BMW ? I highly doubt it. Another thing: lease offers. BMW has some pretty incredible lease offers for their models, Alpina doesn't.

Of course the Alpina is stealth but when it comes to money, I'd go for the 550i. Smiley

Unless of course Alpina offers the same financial advantages BMW does.

Re: New BMW 550i test results

I wouldnt name an Alpina Stealth. With its 1980s rims and side lines you can recognize on the first view that something is special about.

The 550i is undercover and I agree with RC, for that price I always would prefer it.

Impressive... its little faster than M5 E39 Manual. Which had the following times, tested by AMS.

    0-100: 5.1

    0-200:16.9

does anyone have hockenheim times from the new 550i?

Re: New BMW 550i test results

For comparison purposes, the MB E550 coupe does the following:

    - 1/4 mile - 13.3/108mph

    -  0-60mph (96kph)  - 4.8sec

    - 0-100mph (160kph) - 11.5sec

    -  costs approximately $65k+tax

Their 4 wheel drive sedan is just a tad slower.

You can't really compare a coupe to a sedan. I will post the test results from the E500 too, as far as I remember, it was much slower from 0-200 kph compared to the 550i.

Re: New BMW 550i test results

F10 5 series is much faster compared to E60 5 series with similar engines. I drove new 530d and it is much faster than old 530d. More similar to E60 535d.

Do you have any information about tri turbo diesel engine ? 5er with this engine should be really fast, but I didn't heard nothing new about it.

The E550 4dr ($56,300+options/tax) does the 1/4 mile in 13.5/105mph. About equat to the old V8 M5 - not bad.

The sedan is big and roomy (not pretty) while the coupe still seats 4 adults comfortably.

The new 550i does sound good, however.

Waiting for the new M5 . Hopefully, BMW will improve the exhaust note on their new turbo charged engine - but I seriously doubt it. Smiley

    I have my doubts too.

However: the exhaust note on my X5 M changed to a deeper tone after almost 4000 km of driving. Unfortunately the deep growl is only noticeable under idle but at least it is very noticeable now. During driving, the exhaust note is loud but it has a much higher pitch than it would suit an 8-cyl. engine. Not quite the right sound for a truck but it could suit a sedan much better.

Thanks for posting. This also shows that the Mercedes E500 (US: E550) is 2 seconds slower from 0-200 kph...the 550i is definitely a winner here.

Re: New BMW 550i test results

Pleasently surprised to see that my old M5 is still faster than all of these new offerings. Does the 550i really weigh 2000 kg !!?

I am glad that someone noticed this...

550i and new 535d are still on my short list as dialy drivers. BUT... Over 2000kg is way too much. Basically, 550i is marginally heavier then Panamera Turbo. And it is only RWD...

Other car on my short list is Jaguar XFR and I think that it is the best choice. Same price as 550i(it needs a lot of options and that way price goes to 90K € German price), weight is lower and performance are better.

This weight is ridiculous and takes away all the interest of the car. I would not buy a car that weights as much as a SUV. Another point is : here the road tax is based on the weight of the car ( and power )

Re: New BMW 550i test results

You can't feel the weight of the 550i, BMW did a marvelous job.

Another thing: it is rumored that the new M5 will also hit 2 tons of weight.

The Panamera Turbo can weight over 2.1 tons with lots of options.

This is the price people need to pay for good safety and cheaper prices (in case of the Panamera Turbo...Porsche profit ).

Re: New BMW 550i test results

     M5 - 2 tons?

    it's awful job

Re: New BMW 550i test results

When the new 5 series specs were released I wrote a very detailed post about the weight increase, compared with the previous model. BMW tried to hide that using a different standard of measuring weight than they used with the Bangle 5-series (EU DIN vs something else).

I was one of the few that noticed and that was my main reason not to acquire the car. If I remember correctly, the new 5 series was 100kg heavier on average. So a two tone M5 is completely believable. But it's SO sad Smiley

Re: New BMW 550i test results

The E39 M5 weighs 4000 lbs or 2 tons, the new 550i weighs 2000 kg or 4400 lbs or 2 tonnes! Smiley

Re: New BMW 550i test results

New 5 series is bigger, got better safety, got more equipment... Important is that it doesn't feel heavy and it is faster than old one, despite higher weight... Also weight is more important for a cars like 1 M Coupe, M3... which are more cars to go on a race track, while 550i is luxury cruiser which is also very fast

I'm not sure why you wouldn't buy the 550i, it is a wonderful car, the weight is barely noticeable. You have enough other toys for the track. Smiley

Of course I would love to see a lower weight on some cars but if the 2 tons keep the price tag "reasonable", I'm OK with it.

Look at the Panamera Turbo...over 2.1 tons with full options. This is actually sad.

RC, perhaps I am mad but I do notice the weight.

Especially on braking and also on the narrow twisty mountain roads.

Probably I am not wired right Smiley

I can assure you...you can't feel the weight during normal driving and for narrow twisty mountain roads, I can think of something better than a 550i. Smiley  Smiley

A family friend once asked me what I would drive in Romania: very likely an armored and chassis re-enforced Brabus G-class with over 700 HP, custom made. Smiley This car would give me a lot of peace of mind under any driving conditions.
