    Updated my Sat-Nav DVD

Yesterday, while my '05 997 Carrera S was undergoing a 20K miles service, I took the opportunity to have the Sat-Nav DVD updated from the original 2004 version, which came new with the car, to the latest October 2009 version.

No more being directed down one-way streets and no more getting lost on roads that weren't built when the old DVD was made...Smiley

It's a massive improvement...the map is clearer with extra information and there is now the facility to enter destinations by post code...about time too!

Cost was £356 for the discs and installation including the downloading of software updates.

Would thoroughly recommend it to early 997 owners...

Awful lot of money for "just" a DVD. Smiley

It amazes me that no one seems to be attempting to make a business of offering cheaper alternatives to OEM software updates for built-in satnav systems. Not only are the OEM updates expensive, but after a few years the OEMs lose interest in updating the data at all anyway.

Can it really be that difficult to hack into these systems to make it unprofitable even for smaller, leaner, more flexible outfits? Smiley

OMG !! £356 is a lot to pay for a DVD and software updates IMHO Smiley

    Re: Updated my Sat-Nav DVD

I take your views, but if one is to use a Sat-Nav that gives directions anywhere in Europe, what is the point of having one that gives false information?

It's not "just a DVD"... it's the only way, at present, that we can obtain accurate navigation information.  The alternative of sticking with a system that's five years out of date is frustrating in the extreme.

Fritz - maybe this is a business opportunity for someone with your expertise?

If up to date info is what you need, a cheaper alternative is to buy a TomTom or Garmin device

I guess you've decided to keep your car long term

I have absolutely no expertise in that field, John,  and maybe it is just my lack of knowledge which makes it such a mystery to me that no one else has tried to get into what would have to be quite a large potential market for a small, flexible start-up company.

It would naturally have to licence the GPS/map data from one of the large established providers, but its own contribution of adapting it to work with the "hacked" hardware of OEM manufacturers would have to be worth something, even after considerably undercutting the OEMs' prices for update DVDs.  Smiley

I went the TomTom route (no pun intended) for the second car for that very reason.
Have just had a problem with it though, cos it has been losing its way Smileyafter a few kilometres driving. I hope a data update I have downloaded will somehow "reset" it.
This has naturally happened after the warranty ran out.

Guys... for that money I rather update the car

I just recently seen a 997 and he sticked a Tom Tom on top of the original display. Kind of cool, as it fit exactly into that frame of the LCD. So it looked quit good. The only thing I was wondering is, how he charge that unit, as I didnt see any wires.

Now with the super flat Nüvü from garmin, it should be even easier to stick it on top!

It's always the way with these things. Sometimes, I even suspect that they pre-program a self-destruct feature into these things Smiley

Funny story - when Porsche-Jeck was touring the UK a few summers ago, I met up with him in London. When we were discussing his trip, I asked him how he managed without a satnav device on such a long trip. He smiled, pointed to his charming wife and said "She is my satnav"

I have a couple friends that i call human gps. I normaly have a good sense of direction but some people are just waaaay accurate when it comes to roads and places.

    Re: Updated my Sat-Nav DVD

I've come to realise that the easiest thing for me is to use Tom Tom & iGO8 in my PDA/phone.That way:

    - I always have Sat-Nav on me when ever I need it (even if its just to log a POI, plan a route or just look at were something is when I'm not necesarily inside a car)

    - I have it no matter which ever car I'm in

    - Its always updated with the latest maps

    - They are customised to my needs, witn skins, etc, updated speedcamera warnings, personal POIs, favorites, etc. all in the same device, and just one device to take care of and keep updated.

    - And the navigational software for Tom Tom is even better than Porsche's and many car manufacture's, and not to mention iGO8 which is lightyears away.

    - PDA/phone nowadays have a big enough screen (4,3" in my current one) and are touch screen (not like the old old days with symbian phones and keyboard) so are just as confortable as a regular navigator, with the bonus that you can use different softwares depending on your needs that day. My favorite two are the reliable but simple TomTom and the IGO8 with more bells and whistles and infinte customization options and funtions.

    My thoughts exactly..Smiley

For the price of one tyre I don't consider it excessive and the improvement is amazing...

    Re: Updated my Sat-Nav DVD

If you have a car which loose 1000 Euro value or more a month, I would say investing 350 into a new Sat Cd is peanuts and worth it. I never did it on the Potsche as I don't drive it that often, but on my daily driver BMW I do it every year!
