They always were Costas... Enzo indulged in sacking and recruiting drivers all the time! Whoever didn't follow il Commendatore's orders was immidiately fired! Morerecently, Frank Williams had a habbit of sacking the most recent world champion as he thought that the victory was down to his superior car and right he was!

Perhaps... I just suspect that, back then, people would refrain from saying it so openly. F1 drivers were regarded more as heroes and less as employees. I believe that they also had to think less as employees, not least owing to the sport's fatality rates.
The change is not so much on the distilled essence of things but, rather, on having lost our admiration for the idea of things. For example, in the end, we are all mammals but we usually prefer to not reiterate the fact. We hope that our actions and pursuits elevate us somehow. So, too, one would hope that F1 racing sets its drivers apart from the usual grind of making a living, albeit a very good one. If that is, ultimately, just a job then what do children have to look up to?
