    AMT Tech1-110 wheels

     Hi All,

My new wheels arrived today.. Look very nice Smiley

My bathroom scales put them at 7.6kg for the fronts and 8.4kg for the rears.  Just need to get some tyres now and fit them.   Some more pics here:  www.pbase.com/davegordon/wheels.

I'll take some more pics when they're on the car.

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

..should save me 12.6kg of unsprung, rotating mass over my Carrera Classics by my reckoning

(whether or not it'll be noticeable remains to be seen...  hope so, though..)

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

That is wild that you posted this! I just got mine as well. Very nice wheels indeed especially with the Race Lightening option we both specc'ed :-) Here is black anodized. Also- TUV approved.

Source in US for these is direct from Forged Alloys USA, Mike Burroughs (mike@forgedalloysusa.com)

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Great looking wheels to both of you. Dave please do post pics once they are fitted.

@savvy: black looks good too, and look very good on the white spyder. Unlike a lot of people i do like the spyder a lot, imo it looks very very good. OT: looks like a great lift system you have set up, any pics of it with the car up?

    Sorry for the OT Dave

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

wow nice wheel guys. Love them on the spyder, well done.

Love to see the silver ones mounted soon as well, should feel a difference in handling with less unsprung weight :)

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

     Haha!  How cool is that?

I also considered the anodized finish, but went with paint due to the difficulty of repairing it locally in the event of kerb damage.  Mike said they could sort it but the courier costs from here would make that impractical.  I also got them direct from him - mostly due to the group buy he arranged on 6speed (IIRC).

I ordered some new PS2 N2s today due to lack of anything else available around here.  Hopefully they'll arrive in the next few days and I can get them mounted.  Looking forward to it..

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

..p.s. Kudos to Savvy for buying these over the already light Spyder wheels ;-) I imagine you'll find a buyer for those pretty easily if you want with the Cayman guys on Planet 9.

What sizes did you get?  I went for 8J ET57 on the front due to clearance issues with my KW suspension and 10J ET42 on the back (i.e. stock on the front and same as OEM Sport Designs on the rear).  Keeping OEM sizes helps avoid red tape here.  I'd have preferred to go with custom offsets and dumped the spacers.

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

I am also keen to know what size Savvy went for with the Spyder and what offset.  I am looking for a set of track wheels for the Spyder.  Or if Savvy want to sell his Spyder wheels, I am happy to consider that too.

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Damn vultures, stay away from my stock wheels

Seriously, am hanging on to them for my "street" tires and already had offers to buy them. On my new wheels I kept the stock sizes/offsets, which as you know are unique to the Spyder:

    Front: 8.5J x 19 ET 55

    Rear: 10J x 19 ET 42

Challenging enough to tune the suspension with stock sizes much less start messing with them. Have Pirelli Trofeo mounted to them and will be tracking Laguna Seca for three days this weekend

Dave- weights on my mine similar yours, front 16.75lbs, rear 18lbs. Fit and finish are excellent and the race lightening gives a very "technical" look to the wheel. Looking forward to pics of yours installed!

    Cheers

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Good looking rims, especially in black. In this combination, the silver airinlet frame does stand out, any considerations to paint it? Very curious to hear your first-hand experience with those rims.

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Alright.. got them on the car!

Paint finish is very good - I agree those weight-saving cutouts look tricky to paint, but they look just fine to me.

My tyre guy loved them - reckoned they were superb quality.  Only tiny balance weights required...

Driving impressions?  Well, it seems a bit more nimble and the steering a bit more communicative, and a bit better on the bumps - but then it has new tyres, so a little difficult to say for sure what effect the wheels have.  Also need a decent road (/track) to really get a feel  for them...

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

They look great on the car, congrats !

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

wow ! I would not have imagined that they would look that good on your boxster. I like this colour combo

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

I think they look awesome in silver on your car. Well done.

Just got back from three days on Laguna Seca and the weight reduction was readily apparent. Awesome for track wheels or road wheels.

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Savvy, tell me more!  Are they even lighter than the stock Spyder wheels?  How is the trefeo btw?

Thanks, they look very good on the Boxster. Great to hear about the quality.

Not positive of stock Spyder wheel weight, but these are WAY lighter. I would say 10lbs per wheel lighter? 40lbs total?

The steering and braking feel are greatly improved with the AMT Forged Alloy USA wheels. Also the finish is very durable. The Trofeo's seem to me to be comparable to the MPSC or Pirelli Corsa System but more sticky/gummy. They also wear faster Smiley No free lunch eh?

For Track Rats any of the three choices are great, but you will sacrifice ride quality on the street.

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Thanks Savvy.  I am thinking of 18 inch instead of 19s as there is more choice of R spec tyres, at least over here.  I mainly use Dunlop DZ03G which has been the best (wears and grips better than MPSC), but now there is also the new Bridgestone RE-11S (as opposed to the RE-11 which isn't a R compound), and the new Yoko A050.  You may want to try and see if you can get them in the US as they are superior tyres to the MPSC.

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Thanks for the nice comments, guys.  I look forward to a bit of a spirited drive to see what they can really do...

Regarding the Spyder wheel weights, Bluelines posted this in another thread:

The official PCNA full length press release mentions 39 kg for the set of four wheels.

That would mean ca. 9.2 kg for a front wheel and ca. 10.3 kg for a rear wheel given the dimensions

I measured mine at 7.6 and 8.4kg front & rear.

I guess Dymags are still the ultimate in light wheels for the moment, but are unavailable now as far as I know - as presumably the HRE wheels using the Dymag barrels.  BBS make the FI which they quote at 7.4kg for 19x8.75, but they are (over?) twice the price of these, and it's unclear if they do Boxster sizes.

Otherwise there's some pretty light wheels from Fikse, Champion, etc - but they're all slightly heavier as far as I could find.  Someone on Rennlist quoted 9.8kg for an 8.5" OZ Ultralegerra HLT.

I'm pretty pleased with the service I got from Mike at Forged Alloys, and like the wheels :-)

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Thanks Dave.  That is indeed one light wheel!  At almost $5k, they aren't cheap though.  I wonder how they can make it so light when other forged wheels aren't anywhere near as light?  I wonder how strong they are?

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

     Hi WAY,

There was a pretty lengthy thread on 6speed when these wheels were introduced which went into quality, manufacturing techniques, comparisons with competitors etc.  You can find it  here if you're interested.

The wheels are so light because they were purpose-built specifically for this car. We are a wheel engineering company and we designed the wheel with the correct TUV load rating for the 987. Every wheel we make is TUV compliant for the intended vehicle.

Unlike most wheel companies, we engineer, forge, spin, heat-treat, lathe and mill in our own facilities. Both of these customers opted for the Tech1-R Pro Lightening package that reduces weight to the absolute minimum. Pete chose the Hard-anodized finish because it adds NO weight to the wheel. Dave opted for the Brilliant Silver 3-stage paint so his wheels weigh a tiny bit more.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

Top shelf purchase Dave, your boxy looks stunning now

    Re: AMT Tech1-110 wheels

Thanks, guys.  I did consider some other colours / finishes but decided on something a bit understated.  I'm pleased with the result though.

I managed to get out for a spin on a small mountain-pass road near where I live - Wow!  The weight reduction has had a huge effect on the steering feedback.  Where before it used to just load up and feel a bit leaden, I can now feel every undulation and variation in grip.  It feels like it accelerates a little faster, too.  Very pleased with the effects.
