Boxster S PDK --- A great car from Porsche

As I did quite some extensive driving in a Boxster S PDK I thought I might summarize my impressions as these could not have been better Smiley

Given the price of this car (fully equipped approx. Euro 75.000) I have to restate that no other OEM knows how to develop sporty cars as Porsche does. The car has an amazing level of refinement and is really fun to drive:

    - The steering is close to perfection. Just compare it with the steering of an M3 (even if the M3 is on Cup tires) and you know what an excellent job the Porsche guys did: no synthetic feeling at all, heavy enough, very precise - just great.

    - Very neutral and agile suspension setup (the test car didn't even have PASM). That's how a car should handle and feel. I have to say, however, that my GT2 seems to be have a slightly more comfortable ride (no kidding).

    - The engine is absolutely lovely: sufficient mid-rev torque, great sound at higher revs (I love the sound on the Autobahn), suffcient power, very smoothly reving - just perfect! Driven quickly over several 100km of Autobahn fuel consumption was around 12l/100km. This is a very low figure.

    - PDK is very well programmed. Much better than BMW's PDK. Very fast reactions to throttle input, very smooth and quick shifts, no strange behaviour at lower speeds. This gear box is just perfect (even without PASM/SportChrono!).

    - Steel brakes are very good. The suspension could be tad firmer on heavy braking, though - this might be one reason to go for PASM (as I assume that PASM will firm up the suspension when the brakes are applied heavily).

All in all: I cannot believe what a marvellous car Porsche offers for that kind of price tag. The difference to BMW/Mercedes etc. could not be larger. The Boxster S boasts with refinement SmileySmileySmiley

Yep, the Boxster S is a great offer from Porsche but unfortunately the public perception of a "women's Porsche" or "can't-afford-a-911 Porsche" is very strong.

Cayman S has similar problems but sometimes I can understand why.

When I attended the new Cayenne presentation at my dealership, a guy around age 35 with a pretty "cheap" looking blonde entered his Cayman S and started revving the engine while he slowly pulled away from the parking lot (still revving high...like "vroom, vroom, vroom...". Another person I know personally, he owns a 997 GT3, shouted after him "this is only a Cayman for god's sake" and everybody was laughing.

I suppose you can't control who buys these cars.

The defining car for Porsche is the 911. This is unfortunate because any excellent sports car they produce is under the shadow of this legend. Even the  superb 928 and the top handling 944/968 were thought to be short of a 911, how could the Boxster get away?

IMO Porsche should enter more of their models into suitable forms of  motorsport in order to put more shine on them.

Actually I had driven previous generation Boxster S and liked it more than 996 Carrera and Carrera 4S, at that time. (This happened in 2002)

However, after my 997 Carrera S ownership which was manual and had -20mm sports chassie, I got an anti-Porsche bug. I like the Cayman and I'm sure a Cayman S with PDK + Sports chrono and LSD is the ultimate drivers car but I don't like the look of it. I find it very feminen Smiley

I don't want to comment about E92 M3 since I have never driven the car.

However, I'm not disturbed too much by little isolated steering wheel feel since I don't like to feel everything on the road (we don't have smooth roads unfortunately; this is why I didn't like my 911)

I can see your point about the Porsche Sports Chassis option on the 986/996 and also 997 before PASM.

I had it on a 986 Boxster and it made me not want to drive the car on daily basis and at low speeds especially in town. In the end I had it removed and went to the normal suspension and I had a new car. This option was very good for countries with a perfect road network in and out of cities.

Unfortunately, my 997.1 Carrera S was my DD. So I had fun driving the car only 20% of the time. The rest was torture. I even like my Audi TTS more than my 911.

But my main concern with the Porsche is not the sports chassie I had with my 911; it is the Porsche Philosophy I don't like. I had bought a 355 hp sports car Porsche with RWD and the car didn't have LSD. That's why I go for the sports chassie. It sucks big time on 90% of the roads in the World.

Now, with 997.2, LSD can be bought with PASM, great thing, but this time I don't understand why should I pay extra for an LSD on a 385hp, premium sports car from Porsche. I can't get it Smiley

This is the same thing with sports chrono pack. I think, that clock on the dashboard ruins the smooth lines of the dash, looks out of space, and cost extra money BUT it is a must have option if you opt for PDK.

I think 997.2 Carrera S with PDK + Sports Chrono + LSD + GT2 Buckets and X51 is the ultimate car BUT it is too much money and cost as much as GT3 which is almost double the price of an M3 Smiley

IMO, Rings 8:00 minute time of an M3 coupe that is equipped with competition pack. is a big succes when you consider the 1600 kg DIN weight of the car. It is almost as fast as an 997.2 Carrera S with PDK which is a purpose built sports car, IMO.

The M3 is excellent value when compared against a 997 on a hp/$ basis. The M3 Monte Carlo edition sold here looks fabulous.

The M3 is a great car, with an amazing engine, I just think that the latest incarnation is too bulky and heavy.  Apart from the engine, I much preferred the previous generation for its more compact dimensions.

Re: Boxster S PDK --- A great car from Porsche

The latest generation Cayman S does 0-200 kph in 18.6 seconds. This is more than 2 seconds slower than the M3 Coupe. While the Cayman S might be great fun to drive through twists and turns, the M3 still rules regarding straight line performance and engine/exhaust sound. You also get to take two passengers with you in the backseats, this is worth a lot.

On the other hand, if you think that the BMW X5 M has the same straight line performance as the M3 Coupe and that it is only slightly slower on the track than the M5, especially for Turkey with bad country roads, this could have been an alternative. Smiley Smiley Smiley

Not sure what you didn't like on your 997, Onur but I hope you're going to be happier with the M3 Coupe.

    Christian,

My 997.1 Carrera S was manuel with a factory short shift and had -20 mm Sports chassie.

It was my DD, so most of the time during the day, heavy clutch with notchy short shifter was annoying. -20 mm sports chassie was too stiff; actually it has the stiffest suspansion I had ever driven in.

Furthermore, I didn't like the balance and weight distribution of the car. Since the engine was at the back, the car was too much sensitive to lift off oversteer, and doesn't behave natural to throttle oversteer. It oversteered, but griped the ground very quickly and suddenly since the weight of the car was at the back, and there 295 width tires at the back. So in terms of driving dynamics, I prefer boxster/cayman lay out; middle engine-rear wheel drive OR M3/599 lay out; front engine-rear wheel drive.

The most important thing was I had blamed Porsche everyday for not offering LSD with a proper suspansion set-up or PASM. SmileySmiley

Here in the UK with our congested roads - and no speed limit free autobahns - the much greater power and performance of an M3 is of limited use. Its greater bulk is also a handicap here. Agreed, the additional rear seats can be an advantage.

To be honest, when the time comes to replace our Boxster S, which is a third car which we use on holidays and nice days and come down to two cars I haven't a clue what to replace it with. Whatever it is will need to be at least a 2+2, and be a two-pedal (either PDK / DCT / or conventional auto), be reasonably compact and still fun to drive. Maybe a BMW 135i or the rumoured M1 coupe would fit the bill. There are only two of us, occasionally accompanied by my two children (aged 20 and 17).Smiley My daughter loves the Cayenne, but too big, thirsty and expensive. A new Porsche, or even a low mileage 997 PDK would probably be too expensive also.

IMO for driving pleasure, if a Porsche doesn't fit the budget or the interior space requirements, nothing comes close to a good BMW. There are also some exceptional Mercedes and Audi models but usually they have huge engines and are expensive anyway.

I absolutely agree - don't get me wrong I've driven the latest M3 (albeit the convertible version with it's overly heavy folding metal roof) and was hugely impressed with the drivetrain. Just a shame the 3 series coupe on which it is based became so bloated in it's latest incarnation compared with the previous version otherwise it would be top of a very short list. As it is the M1 / 135i would be great - but despite repeated requests my local BMW dealer cannot be bothered to find me a demonstrator 135i DCT to try. My daily drive 123d has been exceptional, I drive 80 miles a day in this 200bhp car and regularly return nearly 50 mpg. No faults, no rattles or squeaks, I don't find the ride with the run-flat tyres on 18" wheels overly hard - nothing like as harsh as the awful Honda Civic which preceeded it.

The one thing BMW is incapable of doing is producing a good sports car though. The latest Z4 isn't  even close to our Boxster in either driver enjoyment, comfort or practicality.
