    2010 Nurburgring 24-hour – Chris Harris update 5...

    “SECOND QUALIFYING FROM CHRIS HARRIS”

    (14 May 2010)

What a fantastic session. I'm normally a bit bah-humbug about qualifying for 24hr races (it really doesn't matter that much) but this was by far the best I've seen here.

The fastest 15 cars were allowed out first to give them a clear track, and Marc Lieb promptly nailed an 8.30 with several wet bits on the track.

At the same time our nominated quickie, Roland Asch managed a 9.15 in the RS, which left us all looking like feeding guppies, because we thought 9.20 was pretty much the limit.

He did two laps, Patrick Simon then jumped in to get a little more time in the car, and then we parked it. This is an attritional race, and unless you really have to run the car in the test and quali sessions, it's best to just park it and then resist the temptation to consume kilos of the Haribos that litter the Manthey garage.

At this stage, we were 32nd quickest and Richard Meaden's Aston V12 was running 42nd. There wasn't much time between the two cars, and it looked like we might hold a small grid advantage for tomorrow's race.

Oliver Matthai had other ideas though. With exceptional speed and irony, he nailed a 9.11 in the closing stages and pushed Meaden&Co up to a very solid 37th. We stayed-put and will start 42nd, which is a cracking result from a street car.

At the sharp end, all was quiet until the final 15mins - at which point the Manthey 8.30 still stood unchallenged - and then everything went went beserk. The Audis clearly weren't finished and the upshot was an 8.24.7 from the Mattias Ekstrom car, with the following three positions all taken by R8s.

The Haribo Manthey GT3 R came an excellent 5th, and the main Manthey GT3 R didn't run again, leaving it 7th.

The improbably rapid GT3 R Hybrid came ninth, behind the only BMW M3 GT2 to make the top-ten. Everyone expected them to blitz the place today, so their pace is a real surprise.

To summarise, this is all great news because:

The Audis look like they might be able to run-and-hide, but Olaf Manthey said afterwards "Let's see where we all are on Sunday." Which is ominous, given he's won the last four 24hr races. And his beard is a bit scary.

And on both a personal and EVO note, it looks like me and Dickie are now in a proper scrap this weekend. We've both deliberately avoided highlighting any potential rivalry because the cars we're driving have quite different philosophies.

But now we're here, there's less than 4sec between us and I'm seeing a very interesting tussle developing. Let's just hope that both cars make it into Sunday afternoon for a proper ding-dong.

Enough foreplay, I want to race now...

    2010 Nurburgring 24-hour – Chris Harris update...

“N24 HAS TO BE THE BEST GRID IN THE WORLD”

    (15 May 2010)

This morning, when I looked out of my bedroom window, I saw this. Depressing. The fifth day-on-the-trot it's been wet and miserable.

And then it began to clear. But by midday, when the cars began leaving the pit garages for the grid assembly, it was still pretty grey.

Then a small patch of blue appeared, and within minutes - literally - the clouds dispersed and it was a beautiful day. Truly, the weather here is as changeable as anywhere in Europe. All talk of a horrid wet race has now subsided and all the talk is of a dry race. I'm not holding my breath, but boy does it lighten the mood having a little sunshine.

The grid was absolutely heaving, - buzzing with expectation. It's hard to describe the sheer scale of it all. Our car was already getting too much attention and then Walter arrived and everything went mad. To be a part of this is quite extraordinary.

We're off now, long day ahead. I'm driving fourth...

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

2010 Nurburgring 24-hour Lotus Exige with evo’s Roger Green...

The Nurburgring. The Green Hell. The world's longest and most challenging race track. Of course we love it, ask anyone who's been there and they'll tell you how absurdly addictive it is. But it's one thing to go on a public day and drive your own car around, quite another to compete in the fabled 24 hour race against 230 other cars.

This year three of those cars will have evo team members in them. Here you can keep a track on Roger Green's progress in his Lotus Exige. Updates work from most recent at the top. Times are CET German time, so chop an hour off for BST...

    Wednesday 12 May at 8.45pm...

Busy day. Car arrived courtesy of truckie Tim but the rest of the team don’t arrive until later this evening, which meant we had to put the awning up, spruce everything up and get the car and ourselves through scrutineering (I expect Meaden and Harris have been have massages). Car looks fantastic, I’m very keyed up now. Spent about an hour queuing to get my kit checked out, but as the weigh you too it’s a process ever driver has to go through. Klaus Ludwig was behind me, and there was no way was I letting him through. Free practice and night qualifying tomorrow!

    Tuesday 11 May at 7pm...

We’re all signed on! Our car doesn’t arrive until 8am tomorrow, but all the admin has been done and when we signed on they gave us a medal. Which was nice. The weather is truly appalling, the cloud base is on the ground and it’s raining hard – the little 260 Cup was aquaplaning all over the place, those campers must be a hardy bunch. The paddock is filling now with trucks, cars and everything else. The race feels like it’s close now.

    Tuesday 11 May at 3.15pm...

Quiet start to the day. Went for a walk earlier up three extinct volcanos – never knew they were here. Should be able to sign on later today, so heading over to the track again shortly.

    Monday 10 May at 5pm...

Race back to the hotel, some 15 miles way in Daun, with Matt chasing hard in his hire car, some of the roads around here are as good as the track itself. Of course he has little chance of keeping, especially as his Golf had all my kit in it. Driving over to the ‘Ring two-up would have been impossible without a second car, the toothbrush-sized isn’t workable when you need to bring race kit as well as civies and the lack a stay for the engine/boot cover makes packing a trick business. The run over was a terrific way to set the seen, though, I’ve spent quite a bit of time driving Exiges recently. Last week I was at Watkins Glen in one, but I can’t wait to see the racer when it arrives on Wednesday, I’ve only been sent pictures on my phone so far and it looks stunning. There are also some very tasty trick bits fitted inside, but more on that later.

    Monday 10 May at 2pm...

Meet up with Matt Cummings the owner of our race Exige and he’s as excited about the week ahead as I am, unlike Dickie and Monkey, this is my first race in the 24, I’ve never even been over to see an event, so this all very new to me. With no track action I head over the ‘Ring Weld’, the new museum complex. I’ve not been in there since they rebuilt a whole new complex last year, and it turns out to be decent way to kill a couple of hours. They have a cinema showing a film of the N24 in 4D, which basically means you wear the silly glasses and get wet every time it rains on the screen.

    Monday 10 May at 11am...

Unlike the Meaden and Harris I don’t have a works drive. I’m in a three man team driving a Lotus Exige Cup and for the record the stats are as follows: 840kg, 260bhp, 70-litre fuel tank and it’s being run by Long Stratton Motor Company. Driving with me are Matt Cummings - owner/pilot and Gavan Kershaw – Lotus development driver. We’re going to be busy and none of us have raced in the N24 before...

After driving over yesterday evening in an Exige 260 Cup I arrive in the hope that we can blag our way onto an Aston trackday to give ourselves a little warm up, but the circuit is covered in a blanket of seemly impenetrable fog. Its cold too, so after a coffee with Meaden and his Aston cronies I head off to Brunchen to see what it’s like over on that side of the track and am amazed to see the campsites already full! Huge scaffolding viewing platforms are already up and I spot a bloke who’s rigged up hot water shower. It consists of some copper pipes over a fire, connected to a pump and tubing. How long have these people been here?

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

What a race! Not as much wheel-to-wheel battles on the track as in the last years but a surprising outcome. The dominating Audi R8s and both leading Manthey Porsche out of the race. Who would´ve expected BMW to lead the race after the rather mediocre qualifying?

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

The leading BMW GT2 is currently having trouble with the gearbox.

     The 24h race is over!

The BMW GT2 (25) came in first, the Ferrari F430 GTC (43) second, and Audi R8 LMS (97) third. Congratulations to all the teams that finished!

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

What a surprising result! Unlike in previous years, no Porsche model on the podium! Especially impressive result of the BMW, as mentioned above being slower than the main rivals, and the F430 entered by Farnbacher. Also great to see that Lexus has entered two LF-A this year as well.

Re: Walter Röhrl competes in the Nürburgring 24 Hour Race - GT3RS (Chris Harris)

Well done BMW especially, because they've had the most wins in this race. Schnitzer also a great name in motorsport.

According to EVO it was transmission issues that brought it to a stop.
