How to best launch a Tip?

My Tip C2S always starts driving in second gear even when in 'Sport' mode.

In order to have the quickest laucnh, must I choose 'M' followed by '-' to select first gear?

Is there a better way that anyone recommends for obtaining the quickest launch?

Re: How to best launch a Tip?

In sport and D mode, you should be able to start from first as well. But I found that with M mode and Sport turns on, it is the fastest way to go. too bad we don't have launch control as this time. Just step on it!

and dont forget to remove psm..

You mean you're able to spin those fat tires at takeoff with a tip?

Re: How to best launch a Tip?

Turning off PSM should force the car to start in 1st gear. The other thing to launch quickly is to brake-torque: make sure you're in first gear, hold the brake with your left foot, use the gas to bring it up to 3,000 or so RPM and slip your foot off the brake.

Re: How to best launch a Tip?

You should not turn off psm. it is there as a safety feature so you do not lose control of car. crg

I think its necessary to both:
    1) disable PSM
    2) enable SPORT

...to switch to first gear. Am I right?

But isn't brake-torqueing a no-no because it ruins the car? I don't know why I have this perception. I could be misled though

Unfortunately, Tips do not drive in first gear otherwise. Maybe 'M' is a better option.

All brake-torqueing is doing is getting the revs up into the heart of the power band while holding the car with the brakes. There is no clutch slippage and no real possible damage to the car. On a manual, revving it to 3k RPM and dumping the clutch definitely is a no-no and an express ticket to a new clutch.

    How about manual?

In my opinion, tip is pretty easy to launch but what about manual? I find it hard to launch it quick from stop. Any tips?

    Re: How about manual?

However you launch a manual, slip the clutch as little as possible. IMO, it's not worth dumping the clutch to win the drag race...

Is that a joke??? The 997S doesn't have enough torque to overpower the tires on a tiptronic launch, so safety is not a concern on launch or at any time if you're just going straight.

And furthermore, if you need an electronic nanny to "save you from yourself" should the wheels start to spin.... Then the best thing you can do for your own safety and well being is to step out of the Porsche 997, and step into a Volvo or a Lincoln Town Car or...anything with big bumpers and a bumper sticker that says "I love my grandkids"...

    Sheesh...

If the wheels begin to spin, dial back the throttle a bit... rocket science, ain't it??
