Pics of Los Angeles mountain roads -- my home turf.

Just a few pics of where I drive. You are now looking at the home turf of Steve McQueen and James Dean Smiley , Santa Monica Mountain and Mulholland Highway (click here to see map). For best viewing, set your picture viewing to 1200 pixel pls. Camera: Canon 1D; lenses: Canon 35 f/1.4L, Contax Distagon 21mm f/2.8.

A drive here could be exhausting, depending on how long and the level of driving. As you could see, a car adapted to this road requires minimal body roll -- something I've not been entirely happy about with my otherwise excellent stock Bilstein. Hence the stiffer springs.

How about Angeles Crest to Angeles Forest highways and then lunch at the little 8 seat diner/general-store?

OOPS! I hadn't been there since that last forest fire. The Hidden Springs Cafe (above) is no more:

I'll miss it. It was a cool place to eat lunch after a few hours of no-guard-rails driving in the twisties.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Enmanuel, wheel is HRE P40, 19 inch. It's their newest monoblock series. I said at the time the wheel came out it would be HRE's all time best seller (I am the self proclaimed world's first customer. :-)), and it looks like it might just become true.

Conny, cheers. Red is not a popular car color anymore, but ever since I saw the first red Turbo as a teenage boy, no other color exists anymore for me. :-)

Gregg, didn't realize you were ex LA resident! Mike, you too?! I just read a little about Hidden Springs Cafe -- seems like the family lost their house and livelihood and is not going to rebuild. And thanks for the map and pictures; yes Angeles Crest Highway is a popular motorsport destination. Another one is the Lake Hughes area; next to a state prison, and maybe oddly, least law enforcement "presence." :-).
Does this bring back memories?

It's been a long time since I ate at the Hidden Springs Cafe. It was a few decades ago while I was building the g.Analyst vehicle dynamics monitor. I was the guest of Car and Driver magazine while they were doing a "10 Best Handling Cars" test. Part of the test that wasn't at Willow Springs race track or the Pomona County Fairgrounds parking lot was conducted on the section of Angeles Forest Highway starting at the rest area where it meets Angeles Crest and turning around at the Hidden Springs Cafe. The no guardrails issue kept ones attention from wandering!

I travel to LA frequently to visit my aunt who lives in the Oaks area of North Hollywood bordering Griffith Park (up-hill from Los Feliz @ Fern Del) and my sister who is in the rock and roll business.
