    SLS Test by AMS

     0-100 3.9

    0-200 11.3

    400m 11.7

    ISO Slalom: 151.1kmh vs GT3: 147.8 kmh and 458: 151.7 kmh

also very impressive: Hockenheim: 1.11.5 vs a Porsche Turbo running in parallel at 1.11.9!

Mercedes seems to have built a serious sportscar here! Smiley

Sorry, my mistake: that's the number of the 430 scuderia, who weighs 300kg less than the SLS.

Great performance from AMG, the competition for Porsche is getting more and more tuff this days.

The competition is getting tougher for Porsche simply because they didn't hear the bell ring in time. When Porsche introduced the 993 Turbo, they shocked the competition. Never happened again and more and more cars are getting faster than Porsche cars, beating them in their most precious domains.

My suggestion for Porsche: wake up before it is too late.

More cars are becoming faster, true! But how much faster can cars become in today's world? Today's Turbo makes the 993 Turbo look like a tractor, so Porsche made huge progress but other manufacturers have proportionately improved their products too. The emphasis nowadays is on efficiency, CO2, km/liter etc.Cars generally have loads of speed that normal buyers have no chance to use, so why invest more on ways to gain that extra 1/10sec to 200km/h?

Maybe, 0-200km/h time is relevant for a very small % of buyers who either don't care about the Law or spend too many days on tracks. If you ask me the relevance of these numbers are only for discussions in coffee shops and internet forums. The vast majority of people buy on the basis of image and marketing. What is the point of someone (like an affluent woman) to drive an AMG SL or a Turbo cabrio when he or she would never go above 150km/h? It's a statement of wealth and nothing to do with speed. I have begun taking a cynical approach to cars in recent years.

    Re: SLS Test by AMS

Still the 911 Turbo is faster in acceleration from 0-100 and 0-200 kp/h.
Same result in the german "Auto-Bild" in its latest issue. They compared the SLS, Audi R8 V10 and the 911 Turbo (PDK). Yes, I know, only for the discussion in coffee shops, but right now I actually left a coffeeshop next to my office.. Smiley

    Re: SLS Test by AMS

The SLS' performance figures are staggering IMO.  If I'm not mistaken, all of these figures surpass those of the SLR's, which was priced much higher. This car isn't just a slightly better SL63 AMG afterall.

It would appear the SLS is price competitive in Germany, but NOT in the USA,  priced about $50,000 above that of the Turbo but similar to that of the R8 5.2. Not sure how Porsche manages to keep its prices below the competition over here? Derivatives perhaps?

After having test driven an E63 AMG, I can appreciate Mercedes' 6.2 litre monster engine.  It provides muscle car sound, immediate throttle  response and a terrific transmission. Obviously, all this will be highly magnified in the SLS - more horsepower and less weight.  IMO, it should be a rewarding car to drive/own.

While the car could have been styled even better IMO, it still provides a unique look, with few examples around. Contrary to Porsches, which are everywhere - in many different versions. Forgot to mention how similar 996/997.1/997.2 look, making things even worse.

I would immediately replace my 997tt with an SLS if it weren't for its inflated price here in the US. Too bad.

    Re: SLS Test by AMS

I'm with reginos on this one. All those cars have become so quick and yes, the competition has closed the gap to Porsche, but how much faster do you want to go? If we have a look at the 0-200 kph times, a time around 10 seconds is nowadays possible or even slightly below that magical barrier. For such times you have to have the latest DSG/PDK-technology and all those cars like the Turbo, SLS or 458 feature such transmissions. So what do you think how much faster could they become in the future? Not so much left to improve performance, if you ask me.

Stefan, I agree with you and reginos.

BTW, 997.2 Turbo PDK is the oldest model. 458 and SLS are later technical designs.

How about price and overall practicality? 997.2 Turbo PDK wins hands down here IMO.

...also look very carefully at that Quattroroute test as well as in latest Sport Auto. Both 458 and SLS are using some tricks(for example 458 use very short gearbox ratios from second to sixth gear)...

I don't think there are any reliable tests of this tire yet (i.e. comparisons to more frequently used tires). It is probably safe to assume that Mercedes selected the "right" tires for the Supertest Smiley

P.S.: Apparently Mercedes paid for the special documentation on the SLS (which also contained the Supertest). Thus, Mercedes seems to be fully aware of the importance of the Supertest performance for their marketing campaign.

    Re: SLS Test by AMS

Nick, according to latest comparison tests in Auto Bild and Auto Zeitung SLS AMG is very competant sportscar. It is marginally faster around Contidrom and Hockenheim then 997.2 Turbo PDK and achieved the same time on Sachsenring. According to 7.40min Ring time for SLS by Sport Auto(HvS) I can tell you that 997.2 Turbo PDK is capable more or less the same time on the Ring.

So, SLS delivers. Just... Conti Sportcontact 5 are tires developed specially for SLS-you can not get them currently for any other car. SLS with some options is as expensive as 458 Italia. That means that with same options both SLS AMG and 458 Italia are around 25K € more then 997.2 Turbo S in Germany.

And I still can not make my mind about SLS design. There is one in our local MB showroom and I looked at it twice already. Too big for my taste and somehow not the very best mix of modern and retro, of course-IMHO.

While I tend to agree with the broader picture you describe, it has to be said that sports cars (thats the cars we usually talk about here) serve a purpose beyond getting people from A to B - to entertain, to showcase engineering excellence, to perform in car racing etc.

    Re: SLS Test by AMS

Kreso, thank you for the information. As usual, very illuminating.Smiley

Regarding the SLS, when I sat in it my feeling was not one of a sport car. Rather because of its long hood and short rear with restricted visibility my view (as well as others) was that it was better suited for the water (speed boat) than racing on a track.Smiley We knew it had plenty of hp 565 but felt it's handling would be compromised because of its weight and configuration.

Tests appear to allay our suspicions.Nevertheless, as I told MB over two years ago, the SLS would not be on my shopping list for sport cars. The Convertible version did peak my interest.
