Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

This is a strange one I've not come across before..Smiley

I noticed a sound, something like a cooling fan, coming from the front of my C2S.

When I stopped the car and turned the engine off the noise stopped, but started again when I re-started the engine.  So this time I left the engine running and checked the front end.

I found a jet of air coming from under the wheel arch, just forward of my front off-side wheel.  It's quite a powerful air stream and I've no idea what it is....nothing is coming from the near-side.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Smiley

I'd be very grateful for any pointers.... many thanks.

You've already answered your own question. Smiley
It is in fact a cooling fan behind the right-hand radiator.

    Yep!

Re: Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

Those views  show the Turbo, though, which has a fan behind both left-hand and right-hand radiators.

IIRC, the 996C2S just has a fan behind the right-hand rad.

Re: Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

Thanks guys... so it's quite normal.  But why haven't I noticed it before in over four years ownership of this car?

That's for sure!....but if it's always been there I'm sure I'd have heard it, particularly standing at traffic lights. I'm still not convinced that all is okay..Smiley

Re: Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

It's a sad admission after all these years, but I had no idea there was a cooling fan on the front right radiator.

However, I think I've found the problem.  On inspecting the radiator with a torch there is a lot of debris clinging to it i.e. leaves, a plastic bag and something nasty which looks very dead!!

Am now trying to find the best way of clearing all this away.... yuk!

As long as you know that the 911 is watercooled by now... Smiley

Re: Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

This is my first water cooled 911 (gave the 996 a miss).

However, I've had it for over 4 years - so I'm making no excuses...Forehead slap.gif

Re: Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

    Update....

Clearing the debris from the front of the right side radiator didn't stop the cooling fan from cutting in much more often than normal....

So I took the car to my OPC this morning.

They found that there were two stones stuck in the left-side fan which was causing the right-side fan to work that much harder!

I'd never had this problem previously, but according to them it's quite a common occurrence.

Not covered under warranty, as it doesn't constitute a mechanical defect, so they charged £42.30 to remove the stones.  Not excessive for peace of mind.

Just thought you'd like to know....if it's as common as they say..

Re: Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

    Thanks for the update, John.

If this is really a quite common problem with the fans, it is from interest for everyone here.

Re: Air blowing from under front wheel arch??

Lucky that I came across this post.

Knowing there are fans in the front, I've noticed recently that the front right fan now comes on far more often than usual. I'll check the left fan for debris .. thanks for posting.
