    Re: PDK or Manual?

    Gnil:

I do know how ths gear box works after 30'000 km of daily driving, spirited driving and different track driving, including the N'Ring

That's exactly why I don't want to sound like I'm arguing or anything, but I find that in manual mode, I enjoy using the gearstick to change gears!  I love upshifting at 5000rpm in Sports Mode using the stick - lovely 'jolt' during upshift!  (below that rpm, no jolt, and above that rpm, too much of a jolt for daily use)  Like you I rarely use the buttons for daily driving.

When you get the new steering wheel you will use the paddle shifters more than you do the buttons. Using them somehow comes more naturally.

    Re: PDK or Manual?

Over 75% of ALL 997s are now PDK equipped .... buying a manual may make it less desirable when trying to sell the vehicle

Actually the US is where the PDK penetration is among the lowest ... it seems: Manual is for "real men" while PDK is for girlies ....

When I've heard this I found it strange because I thought Americans love automatics. However, even the BMW M5 was made in manual (and not a very good one for that) because of demand from USA !

It's an odd thing.  The vast, vast majority of Americans have been driving automatics for 40 or 50 years.  It's the norm. So I think that those of us who drive manuals are rebels of sorts and have an aversion to anything that is even close to an automatic.

btw, like the M5, a traditional manual will be offered in BMW's new 550 only in the US market.

    Re: PDK or Manual?

In North America, the "norm" has historically been automatic. Most Porsche buyers have no interest in following the "norm" and are certainly not "mainstream".

So if Automatic = Mainstream, then Manual must = sporty.

Different story in EU, where most cars have been and are manual; manual is the "norm". If F1 race cars or high profile sports cars such as Ferraris can get away with "automatic" (yeah, I know they're not real automatics), then there is no stigma attached to the double-clutch technology. It becomes a totally acceptable option on a Porsche.

In North America I think that the perception is still manual OR automatic. The third option will catch on, just a bit more slowly.

I sense that this was also the case with the BMW M5 which was only available with SMG, leading to a request of a manual version in North America

The info I have is that in Germany Tip sold more than 6-speed.

Just to be clear, my comment about manuals in Europe was about all brands, not just Porsche.

I can understand the current infatuation with PDK but I certainly don't know why Tip would have been the prererred option Smiley
