    New 997 Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet (2010)

The engineers at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new top-of-the-range sports car for the customer who will only settle for the very best in terms of power, performance and driving dynamics: the 911 Turbo S. The heart of this most exclusive high-performance athlete is of course a six-cylinder boxer boosted by two exhaust gas turbochargers with variable turbine geometry, with an increase in power over the 911 Turbo by 30 to 530 bhp (390 kW). Maximum torque is a most impressive 700 Newton-metres (516 lb-ft). At the same time this new top model comes as standard with all high-tech components available only as options on the “regular” 911 Turbo.

Despite its significant increase in power and dynamic performance, the new 911 Turbo S, at 11.4 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 24.8 mpg imp), does not consume any more fuel than the Porsche 911 Turbo, making it by far the most efficient sports car in its performance class.

The 911 Turbo S comes exclusively with seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) (Porsche’s Double-Clutch Gearbox) conveying drive power to Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive. Driving safety optimised to an even higher standard is ensured by Dynamic Engine Mounts and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) including a mechanical differential lock on the rear axle. In conjunction with Launch Control on the Sport Chrono Package Turbo likewise featured as standard, 911 Turbo S accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and reaches 200 km/h in 10.8 seconds

Top speed is 315 km/h or 195 mph. Extra-light and fading-resistant Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) provide the same outstanding performance in terms of stopping power and controlled application of the brakes.

The supreme level of standard equipment including Dynamic Bending Lights, 19-inch wheels in RS Spyder design with central locking, a three-spoke sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles, adaptive sports seats, cruise control, a CD/DVD changer and exclusive twin-tone leather upholstery in Black/Crema or Black/Titanium Blue additionally underlines the outstanding class and calibre of this first Turbo S in five years.

The new Porsche 911 Turbo S will be at the dealership as both a Coupé and Cabriolet as of May 2010. The German market price of the Turbo S Coupé is Euro 173,241 including 19 per cent value-added tax and local equipment in the market (the Euro base price is Euro 145,400). The Cabriolet retails in the German market at Euro 184.546, again including 19 per cent VAT and local equipment/specifications (base price Euro 154,900).

Re: New 997 Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet (2010)

Difference around 24.000 Euro incl. VAT in Germany?

If I understood well (not 100% sure from the above announcement though) the following are standard:

    • PDK + paddles
    • SC+
    • PTV
    • PCCB
    • Adaptive sport seats
    • Dynamic lights
    • Spyder wheels
    • CD changer
    • Cruise control
    • 2 tone leather in special colour

totaling to some 15.000+ Euro on a normal Turbo.

IMO if it is so I would go for the S (if I could afford the normal Turbo that is)

I wouldn't be surprised if the real 0-100km/h is 3secs or below Smiley

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

Re: New 997 Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet (2010)

I think you missed out Dynamic Engine Mounts and mechanical differential lock? (Not sure if the latter is already standard on the 997.2TT). Smiley

IMHO the only undesirable is that one is forced to pick the 2 tone leather interior combination. Smiley Is it not possible to pick a different leather interior colour? Smiley It must be as a Porsche Exclusive option anyway Smiley Smiley

Overall, I think it's a superb package. Smiley Smiley I think the value for money is superb - surely indicative of the fact that it has been launched during the end stage of the global economic recession.

The big development IMO is the fact that manual transmission is not even offered. Partly reflective of how well PAG considers the PDK with paddles combination blends with a 997.2TTS but also perhaps partly because of the kind of people who would buy a 997.2TTS.

As I predicted: normally you pay 3.5k extra when ordering the RS Spyder wheels in a Turbo, but you don't get the 3.5k back, when you order a Turbo S with Turbo II wheels. Smiley

The german configurator shows for the normal turbo (inclufding TAX) :
    Base price : 148.727 €

    Bi color : 368,90

    dynamic lights : 702,10 €

    PTV : 1309 €

    PCCB : 8710,80 €

    PDK : 3915,10 €

    Tempostat : 440,30 €

    seats : 1011,50 €

    CD : 523,60 €

    steering paddles : 416,50 €

    In total : 25454,10 € extra

    Total price 174.181,10€

So the turboS is cheaper ????Smiley

Re: New 997 Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet (2010)

    NO, it is not just...

    ...difference is very small indeed.

If you order Turbo and Turbo S with same equipment and standard Turbo II wheels difference is 4682,65€.

If you order both with RS Spyder wheels difference is just 1171,15€.

Of course, IF you really NEED PCCBs.

Re: New 997 Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet (2010)

The price is indeed fair, as you would probably take this extras in any way.

The power is just insane - 3.3 sec 0-100 / 10.8 0-200 - wow, this was couple years ago only in the +500k€ range available!

According to a source, the Carrera GT can't outrun the 997 Turbo S up to 240 kph. Pretty impressive indeed. Smiley

Btw: a sub-3 seconds 0-100 kph time isn't going to happen but 3.2-3.3 seconds are pretty impressive too. Smiley

The Turbo S is definetely an interesting offer, I'm am just a little bit disappointed that there is not more visual difference compared to the 997 Turbo.

Re: New 997 Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet (2010)

A little information about the technical hardware differences of the engine compared to the "regular" Turbo engine: there are NONE.

Different is only the DME programming incl. 0.2 bar more boost pressure and the Overboost is gone.

Is it possible to chip tune regular Turbo for 0.2 boos increase and get TurboS:-)?

Maybe RC could provide an better answer but, in theory answer is yes. Just, why would you do it? If you already have 997.2 Turbo you have one of the fastest cars on the market. If you plan to order new Turbo and really need 530hp then go for Turbo S.

My advice is either key specd(SC Turbo, PTV, Steering wheel with paddles etc. BUT NO PCCBs) 997.2 Turbo PDK or full specd 997.2 Turbo S.

Re: New 997 Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet (2010)

    artur777:

Well, this should be the easiest mod ever but to be honest (and blunt), I don't think that the Turbo S will be much faster than the current Turbo in most real life tests/reviews. Smiley Smiley

Still: considering the price tag, the Turbo S is a good offer. It should definetely be one of the fastest sportscars on the market, especially when it comes to 0-100 and 0-200 kph acceleration. Finally Porsche realized that the Vmax doesn't really count in most countries worldwide.

The bad news is: the 991 Turbo will be faster (power should be the same but car is slightly lighter) and I'm also pretty sure that the competition will adapt soon.

I also think I said it in a different thread a couple of weeks ago: I wouldn't tune the facelifted Turbo, tuning the Turbo S makes even less sense. Both cars do 0-100 kph in aprox. 3.2-3.4 seconds, what the heck does one want to tune ?! 0-200 kph acceleration is in the sub-11 seconds range, this should be enough for almost any other competitor out there.

    Leave it like it is.

This is true but the only problem is: the 991 comes next year and the 991 Turbo shouldn't be more than 12 months behind, maybe even less.

Would I still buy the 997 Turbo right now ? Well...probably yes. I'm just happy my 997 Turbo lease runs out in 18 months, so I can decide what to do next. Smiley

    PDK ONLY.

With the uproar from enthusiasts over the Italian approach to manual gearboxes these days, I would have thought this GT2 beater would also offer a "click-click-click-click-click" option.

The 0-100 time makes up for the deficient human gear change, but allows us mere mortals to get the enjoyment out of a clutch and gear lever, and still beat a GT2 or Panamera Turbo!

Trying to get a tester by 24/April - will hopefully get a full test-drive review carried out the week after that.
