Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

Bad news for current X5 M owners?

According to one of our sources, the X5 facelift is due around march/april 2010.

There won't be any power or engine upgrade but the 6-speed automatic tranny may be replaced by a different system (8-speed tranny or even DKG) and the X5 M may get KERS, maybe optional.

Just wanted to mention it...Smiley my X5 M is going to be produced in January, so I guess I have no chance of getting a facelift.

Why I care ? The DKG and/or KERS upgrade could improve the performance figures of the X5 M, even if the power output stays the same.

Minor external changes are expected for the X5 M, LED daylight running lights are being tested (not sure if they make it into production) and the taillights look more like the new 7series lights.

A minor price increase is also to be expected.

Here are the video links (NOT Facelift related), enjoy:

Hmm, I guess this means I should wait a couple more months before finalizing my order?

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

BMW did the same "facelift story" to the latest M3 customers as far as I remember...

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

that would be nuts. the car has barely been announced to the market.

just what mercedes did with the sl. 2 facelifts in 2 years.

and it's not the facelift that i care about. it's the gearbox mainly. 8 gears must be fantastic coupled with the M engine.

there was already some chatter about this on xbimmers.

btw anyone know of any good XM forums ?

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

Hmm, if this is the case, I am cancelling my order for the new one!

RC, would you be able to get some certainly on this?

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

I heard that KERS will debut with F10 M5. So according to that source, X5 M won't get a KERS..

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

Guys, the info I got is from someone who knows a lot about products developed in Germany but since X5/X6 M are coming from the US, his information isn't too accurate. He just told me the "chatter" he heard talking to some of his collegues after he heard that I ordered a new X5 M.

He also told me that one or two facelift features have been cancelled for financial reasons but he had no details.

The X5/X6 M already has the new iDrive as far as I know, so this certainly won't be changed.

DKG/8-speed auto tranny are still in the game though, not sure about KERS and yes, it will debut on the M5. Since the M5 won't show up until late 2010 or even 2011, it is very unlikely it is going to show up on the X5/X6 M first.

Just passing on some gossip...take it with a grain of salt.

Engine power won't change, interior won't change and the exterior stuff shouldn't be dramatical either

Only thing concerning me is that rumored 8-speed auto tranny which could (and should) improve performance.

I will NOT change my order, I need a family car since the Cayenne is gone by December 30th but of course I would have loved to get all those new things, even if only marginal, on my X5 M.

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

KERS and 8 speed / DKG would be what I would hold out for.  The cosmetic stuff doesn't bother me.  My thinking previously is that BMW will do the same as what they did to the M3 sedan when it was released, which amounts to a new set of tail lights being updated for the update model so it doesn't upset existing clients.  I hope that is the case.

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

I thought the facelift is for the Regular X5 which will now get the X5 M's headlights? I'm pretty sure I read on bmwblog.com that the X5 M won't be changed...

RC, it seems that you might probably be getting last year's car, next year! IMO your dealer should have been open about this eventuality.

If you are honouring your order, at least try to renegotiate a further discount.

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

RC, if this is true, I would wait for the 2-3 months longer if I were you. Trust me, you wont be happy seeing taht your brand new car, is not up to date within very few months, techincaly and for sure only minor but optically as well.

In your case, I would bring back the cayenne TTS in any case, and preorder the facelift (if its really comming so soon), and on the other hand I would ask my BMW dealer to check a nice small sedan, as a rental for the family, in Austria they are working together with sixt, and you get really good conditons if you are a good costumer. I thins a 3 series costs arround 600 euro, inclusing insurance and everything, after the special discounts. Should be even cheaper in your place.

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

BTW RC, the third video of the "X5M" is actually a E53 X5 4.8is.  Naturally aspirated V8 sound, very clear to me.

I expect only different LED graphics in rear lights.

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

OK, here's another update, a more precise one (ONLY valid for X5 M):

    1. slightly different rear light LED orientation similar to BMW 7series and new 5series (whatever this means)

    2. 8-speed auto tranny possible but performance gain shouldn't be expected, more important for fuel consumption (in this case: fleet consumption) and CO2 output

    3. DKG not very likely

    4. frontlights may stay unchanged, apparently the facelift with LED lights or different LED tubes has been cancelled

    5. best part: software update for improved V8 engine-/exhaust sound, retrofit (!) possible on older cars

Again: only valid for X5 M, not regular X5 or X6 (I assume the engine-/exhaust sound update would apply to the X6 M too).

@WAY: do you mean the white X5 in the fourth video ? This is a X5 M.

Sorry, I meant this video.  Definitely a previous model 4.6 or 4.8is...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ9v9sBRWb8&feature=related

As for the update, I would be very dissapointed if they updated the X5M by April with the 8 speed.  I would have thought the regular X5 would be updated first, and the M won't get that treatment till another 12 months or so.  Isn't that what they did with the E90 M3?

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

As a mere fyi, I saw pictures of camoed facelifted X5 that seemed to feature 7 series-like rear lights.  Also article mentioned the older (current) V8 being ditched in favor of the biturbo 407ps unit (comment only applies to the X5 as the X6 had it from the beginning).

Comparison (X5 and X5 M), there already is a different in the front part, so I doubt that it is going to change (on the X5 M).

rc, as you had a chance to drive the M. how is the transmission in manual mode ?

Pretty snappy but it is not as good as the DKG on my wife's M3 I'm afraid.

I tested it only for a minute or so because it was raining/snowing and I didn't see the point of using it at that particular moment.

The auto function works pretty well, especially in M Dynamic Mode and Sport active, so I'm not sure you're going to use it very often. There is hardly lag as long as you don't use the kickdown function (not a good idea with turbo engines, it takes a second or two to build up boost pressure and you get a huge lag).

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

that's what i noticed in my 50i too. copmared to the cayenne turbo. the bmw engine exhibits no lag in 95% of situations when you apply throttle.

in the cayenne we push the throttle a few moments before we want to be pushed forward....

And that reflected my own current information.
Only the rearlights will be changed and retrofit tooSmiley
8-speed auto tranny is not very likely in 2010 and on the other hand:
nobody knows how it will work regarding fleet consumption and CO2 output.
The current 6-speed works for me almost sufficient.

Good news: the software update for the exhaust sound...SmileySmiley

I think it will recieve white LED angel eyes . At least 3 Coupe / cabrio LCI  (and M3) will get them, so I guess X5 LCI will get them too...

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

Regarding the software update: apparently it is supposed to let the V8 bi-turbo engine sound more like a V8 with a deep growl.

Re: Couple of X5/X6M video links & Facelift information

strange that the M should sound rather bad. i am quite happy with the sound of the 50i.

maybe it's the exhaust pipes on the M that are limiting ? then again how would a software reprogram alter the sound ??

The software DOES alter the sound, the X5/X6 is using a "clap" exhaust system. According to M GmbH, the clap is open permanently when Sport mode is activated. They still have possibilities to tune the sound, M GmbH promised a deep V8 growl with the update, completely different from the current sound.

Btw: the update is not mandatory, if you like your current sound, stay with it.

ONLY for the X5 M but I suppose it is valid for the X6 M too.

This update is NOT for the 5.0 or the X5 V8.

I dont think that the DKG will make it to the M5 facelift. The car is to new and in the past, BMW always took care not to make changes on this kind of new cars.

Again, these are good news as to the fact that the sound of the X5M for me ist one of the 2 flawsSmiley
The other one ist the small tank.
Maybe there is another softwareupdate availableSmiley
