Well it helps to measure apples to apples. 2008 numbers are misleading because they occurred during a severe recession. 2007 numbers are the more accurate comparison because they occurred during a normal time.
That being said, these numbers are still horrible down 50% from a normal time.
2007 report October
ATLANTA--Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States and Canada, today announced second-best ever October sales of 2,862 units in the United States. In the first 10 months of this year, Porsche has sold 29,140 new cars, which is on track to repeat last year's record sales.
The 911 model also achieved record October sales with 972 units sold, up 39 percent over last October sales of 697. So far this year, 911 sales are 10,805, representing a 10 percent increase over year-to-date sales last October of 9,859.
Also impressive were Porsche's new-generation Cayenne SUV sales that saw a 46 percent rise, with sales of 1,184 versus 809 Cayennes sold last October. Year-to-date, there were 10,061 Cayennes sold, up 13 percent over October 2006 sales of 8,869.
Boxster sales of 316 also realized an increase of 13.3 percent over last October sales of 279.
In addition, dealers sold 556 Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned cars in October vs. 493 for the same period last year.

The big surprise to me is how bad the boxster/cayman sales have fallen since it is the lowest priced and one would think it would be the least affected by severe economic times, but perhaps those were marginal buyers who are really hit hard now.

2009 - 3296
And can everyone pay attention to the 911 TURBO sales for a moment
300 turbos sold in october 2007, 22 turbos sold in October 2009 - that my friends is the 928 equivalent price level sales for Porsche today. Less than 1 passenger car sale per day at the same price level that the 928 occupied in its day. Something to think about.
The cayenne is still the mule pulling the porsche wagon!

Turbo 997.2 available as from 11/2009. I believe production of 997.1 Turbo had ended 2 or 3 months ago and anyway no one would be interested in buying the outgoing model.
Thanks Reggy,
All 911 turbo sales - coupe AND cab (turbo coupe only in parentheses)

all 4 years average to 1612 for 10 months add in a generous 20% and you get 1950/year average for all 4 years for combined turbo sales. For turbo coupe only the number would be 1250/year.
So for 4 year average you get 1,950 sales per year at a 928 price level in todays greatly expanded luxury sports car market where for example Aston-Martin sales went from the hundreds in the early 80's to 7000 today.
Compare that to the 2500/ year mark back in the day before the body change for the 928. Something to think about before discounting the success the 928 had at one time and may have again, IF
