    Turbos: I'm getting 16psi - Enough?

In cool weather, Sport Chrono button on, starting by flooring it in 3rd it never goes over 16psi

(i.e. floor it in 3rd gear @ 2500 to redline then shift, then to redline in 4th, etc.))

That's supposedly overboost. IS that enough?

    Something wrong?

    Conversions 16psi=

    1.1 bar

    1.125 kg/cm2

    THANKS!

    Is your question

    a. And what should the max reading be in any gear?

    b. What is the max boost reading doing exactly what you did?

Can't answer b. yet. But the answer to a. is the max reading should be 17 psi, 1.2 bar. The easiest way to see this is to do what you did, but in 4th gear, or better yet, 5th and 6th gear. The higher gear presents a higher load to the engine, I think.

"a." is my issue (nice work clarifying)   Smiley

Since I really have an aversion to totally beating the s*** outta my car I guess, in my car's case things are ok. I suppose I could "get it up" to 17 if I tried harder and conditions were different. Smiley

You're welcome. You don't have to try "harder," just floor the pedal in 5th or 6th gear (instead of 3rd, to give the engine a higher load to work against), and you should see 17 psi/1.2 bar.
If not, then your car for whatever reason is not seeing max possible boost. Whether you could feel a difference, say against my car, I don't know.

I tried 3rd gear this morning and did find it harder to see max boost in 3rd gear, and almost ran over a Prius in the process. Smiley

Yes, now using a higher gear makes more sense though I must admit I still need  to take a class in owning this car. I printed out your advice, putting it on my car's dash. Will try it out during next drive. Will report back.  Thank you again C., you're the man!

    Re: Turbos: I'm getting 16psi - Enough?

Contrary to what many people (who in particular seem to frequent the 6Bling channel) think, our engines will have less boost when it is cooler not more.

One of the ECUs major inputs is air mass and it works tirelessly to hit certain air mass targets which are programmed into the mapping. At DIN climatic conditions (temp 20DegC) you should see what Porsche says you should under high load (3rd gear should be load enough).

If the air is cooler and the mass of air is denser then the programm will adjust the boost to be lower to hit the same target so your 1.1bar is probably perfectly fine.

If you connect a Durametric reader to your ECU you can read off the density of the air in kg/m3 which you can observe varying day to day.....

LOL. I know. The other day someone asked what the Sport Chrono button does and when I started listing, we realized to my surprise it actually does 6 different functions. (You know what they are, don't you? Here is a hint, 6 acronyms: PSM, PASM, PTM, TCU, ECU, ETC. And ETC is not etcetera, it's another acronym! Smiley)

BTW, for the boost pressure, I did what you did and saw 16 psi in third gear too. 5th & 6th will or should show 17 psi consistently. Just make sure there is no Prius in front when you go WOT in 5th. Smiley

If you're going to go the way of a Durametric interface, I'd datalog the boost pressure.  The dash gauge is incredibly inaccurate.

    Bob,

    1. Do you know if the boost pressure seen in Durametric is actually measured, or is it calculated?

2.The inaccuracy of dash gauge that you saw, was it consistently low, or high, or was it a time lag? (I know about the artificial ceiling of 1 and 1.2 bar.) TIA
