If you ask me the basis for these rumours is probably just the 997GT2 FL... One thing is for sure: if they will offer a FL for the GT2 it will be available sometime 2010. Also, it will most likely have around 550hp. Somehow I don't think they will - in addition to this FL - also offer a completely "new" and additional RS model. Maybe the FL will be called "RS"... Who knows.

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

No it will be called GT2 SC, have a hideous body kit... think 'Moby Dick' cross breed with Gemballa, 21-inch Fuchs wheels, exhaust pipes the size of chimneys and cost USD 1'000'000. That is, if you can get your hands on one of the 100 limited editions

    lol Bluelines, you're nasty!

September 2010... sounds like end of life - clearing the shelves time for the 997 to me... don't know when the schedule is for the 998/991, but it would make sense to announce that in march 2011?

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

The rumor mill is at it again, speculating that Porsche will release a new GT2 RS. PistonHeads is reporting the German automaker may be building a lighter GT2 with a 580 horsepower engine.

Built specifically for the track, the Porsche GT2 RS would appease critics who claim the current GT2 is better on the road than on a circuit. Helping to lighten the load is an acrylic glass rear window made by Perspex. Additional mods would include center-locking wheels, possibly similar to the 19" RS Spyder forged aluminum model available for the 911 Turbo.

These modifications result in an incredible 14% weight reduction, or 200kg.

The current Porsche GT2 was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007 as a 530 bhp (390 kW) unit. Thanks to a horizontally-opposed six-cylinder 3.6-liter twin turbo engine, it goes 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds, on its way to a 204mph top speed. All this comes at a cost: $191,000 USD.

Although the 911 GT3 RS costs $20,000 more than the GT3, it seems likely a GT2 RS would be significantly more expensive than a GT2. After all, a Porsche GT2 costs $60,000 more than a 911 Turbo, and also features a 50 hp increase and 145kg weight decrease.

Is it possible that the Porsche 911 GT2 RS will cost upwards of $250,000? Only time will tell.

200kg reduction by only perspex and wheels seems impossible...

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

It says "Helping to lighten the load is an acrylic ...", so that and the wheels is not the only measure.

They'll probably install a number of lightweight components from the GT3 rs as well.

What also strikes me about the article is this:
"Although the 911 GT3 RS costs $20,000 more than the GT3, it seems likely a GT2 RS would be significantly more expensive than a GT2."

As if the $20.000 increase between a GT3 and a GT3 rs is not significant... :O

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

    Posted this on another forum:

My sources (German, supposed friends with engineers at Porsche) told me the RS models were actually built - limited numbers, stripped out ~570PS very expensive. Quite where it is is a mystery ? Someone mentioned a French test driver talked about involvement/being involved in the launch but that was a couple of months ago so ???? I reckon there are things going on in Porsche with the financial "fun", change of personel etc and also I wonder whether it has some connection with the 997.2GT2 which my source said was being developed and in particular the DFI engine in GT2 guise and ~550PS was struggling with reliability !! maybe they are rethinking launching RS GT2 just in case they can't do similar with the DFI version because of the engines power limitations........ people tend to forget just how much development went into the Metzger engine to reach the level of reliability it has as these heady power/torque levels and it seems tha Porsche cannot reach their standards of "reliability" at these levels with the DFI ? ?

What do RTers think ? the 200kg weight saving is a joke, 50kg would be quite something.......

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

Personally, I think that there will be only a GT2 FL (spring or fall next year) - no RS version. Porsche will not sell many GT2, if they also added a RS version production numbers would be much too small (for the RS) to make such car profitable, if you ask me.

Thus, just a GT2 FL with the following specs:

    - 550hp

    - no DFI

    (- of course no PDK)

    - changed tire composition (same as in case of GT3 Mk2)

    - Smaller optical mods (lights, rims)

    Smiley

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

    Marcus

The Mezger turbo engine is dead....... no turbo model to make it viable for production. Porsche engineers were definately working hard on getting the DFI lump reliable for the next GT2 and 550PS....... I just wonder what "headroom" they will allow, the traditional Porsche turbo durability or some new "warranty period only" standards ?

    Interesting times

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

Don't forget that they still build the GT3 Mk2 and the GT3RS - both with the GT1 block. What should them make abandon the GT1 block for the GT2 FL? They just need to do some ecu mods to get those additional 20hp... I still don't think the GT2 FL will get the DFI engine Smiley

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

Also worth keeping in mind that Andreas Preuninger (Porsche's highly respected Project Manager for the GT3 and GT3 RS models) is now also responsible for the GT2 model...

Interesting posts by Toby, but I'm with Markus on this one-I bet (?hope) the Mezger/GT1 block stays with the GT2.2-I would think the DFI motor in the GT2 would be a short-sighted compromise.  Not sure about the life of the GT2RS-I would love to see it with its weight reduction, but one does wonder with the VW/PAG merger/financial contraction whether the GT2RS project has been shelved-at least for now....Smiley

Well I am pretty confident in my source's information that Porsche engineers were "working on making the DFI GT2 application but having reliability problems"

Having said that you guys may be right with Preuninger in charge they may decide to shelve the DFI idea and tweak the Metzger - doesn't sound like the $$$$$$ driven Porsche we know nowdays tho' does it

I don't, no, but wondered the same thing. Anything is possible isn't it but it would doubtlessly be about cost somewhere down the line

It without a doubt is about cost, but when it comes to Porsche's flagship GT models, it's something they should not allow to be the biggest factor. Even the Turbo is way too expensive to end up with the Carrera engine.

    Re: 997 GT2 RS

I remember RC saying they did not implement FDI in the Mezger block due to cost-related issues...

The chassis is completely stock apart from the wheels 9s and 12s, offsets were calculated to be same as factory with the 5mm rear spacer allowed for - just shows that the factory got it spot on Smiley

From page 35 of the 2010 Porsche Sport Driving School Brochure

     Super Sport

Designed to meet the challenges of motorsport, some vehicles are simply made for the track – these include models like the Porsche Carrera GT and road-legal racecars such as the 911 GT3, GT3 RS, GT2, GT2 RS and GT2 CS. If you own one of these vehicles, this special training course is the one for you.
