when is the much anticipated facelift coming lol
indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)

From reading about this car, it seems that it is a great drive in the Mercedes tradition of speed from a big front engine with real world practicality, safety and comfort.

Not all buyers of very expensive cars (near 200k Euro) demand race car dynamics in impractical, limited use packages a la Ferrari, Lamborghini etc. Therefore, this car will sell very well to such people. I also suspect that the running costs of the SLS will be very normal and in a reliable package, compared to the the "junior" supercars.
The styling looks a very weird mix of new and old at first, but it is very unique, distinct and grows on you.
I expect the only real and credible rival to the SLS to be the Panamera Coupe in 2 years time, and with the added benefit of 2+2 seating.

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

Wow, second coming of the Aztek.........
What is the similarity?
extreme ugliness - also shared with the panamera
It might look strange at first but it is in no way ugly. I actually like the silver car below. The colour suits it a lot.
Also the front V8 and the rear transaxle point to similarities with your favourite car.

front engine rear transaxle is the best design for passenger vehicles
but what has that got to do with the external skin?
This is ugly from all angles, the SLR was major ugly especially with the melted nose, the veyron is ugly, the new mclaren is bland.
Price tag has nothing to do with looks. nor does engine layout.
One-77 is a masterpiece, SL65 black is awesome, CGT is great, Camaro SS looks awesome, merc e coupe and cls are fantastic, maser gt is great.
Some hit the mark, some miss by a mile. nothing to do with badge or price tag.
Headlights are awkward and don't flow w/ the 300SL grille form. The rear is uninspired, evokes an 80's Pontiac. MB should have stayed closer to the 300SL shape once they commited to gullwing doors and grille styling The current result is not coherent. Doesn't mean it won't sell.

Carpe Diem--life is but a crack of light bounded by eternities of darkness
AS with many cars, in person much better looking. It has a very aggressive posture and will appeal to people who are tired of driving the same looking Porsche and those who do not want to spend close to $200,000 for a performance super car. With limited production and performance on par with all but the elite sport cars, it will get its fair share of attention.
All this proves is that the SLS is a polarizing design - no problem as it promotes discussion and buzz, and as long as the number of people who like it = annual production, then it could well be a success for M-B. For me, the most interesting part is an unexpected return to lighter and simpler GTs....especially from M-B who could always be expected to have the heaviest car in each segment.
Present: 2005 STi, 2002 M Coupe
Future: 2009 Cayman S - pending; 2010? Audi RS5 ??
