    California tests

Are all very, very good indeed.

As Reginos already posted in different thread Cali Hockenheim time is 1:13,5min with standard 19". It is actually awsome time since 997.2 CS(PDK, SPASM, PCCB, SC+) time is 1:13,4min(which is identical to R8 4.2 FSI Magnetic Ride time). So, much heavier Cali is pretty fast on the track...

EVO Bedford time is 1:25,0 which is also excellent time.

Every test praised DCT and I after recent new test drive in Cali must fully agree-it is the best DCT currently on the market. Seventh gear is in Cali(also in 458 Italia) a power gear and top speed is achieved in it.

Good indication what is 458 Italia capable of...SmileySmileySmiley

    Re: California tests

I test drove the California today, nicely optioned car, black with a black and red interior.

It felt very easy to drive, the steering was direct, responds instantly, the comfort setting gave it a better ride quality on 20"  alloys that my 997 on 19" alloys. The DCT was great, much better than the F1. Changes were very quick and the engine likes to rev all the way to the redline. The car had a very well built feel, with the top open the fabulous exhaust note was amazing in the few tunnels we managed to find! You could only get kids or a dwarf in the back seat but the front seats are very nice and comfortable, you could easily drive it all day and not be tired! Overall very impressed!

    Re: California tests

Really surprising track performance, if not shocking :

Bedford (evo, new layout) - faster than SL65 black series and R8 V8, not that far from CGT, GT2, GT-R considering what cali is

    Carrera GT - 1:23,3

    997 GT2 - 1:23,5

    Nissan GT-R - 1:23,6

    California GT - 1:25,0

    SL65 Black series - 1:25,2

    Audi R8 - 1:26,5

    Autocar handling course - close to 599 fiorano, 997.1 GT3, R8 V10, faster than R8 V8 and 997 turbo

    430 Scuderia - 1:09,5

    997.1 GT3 - 1:12,5

    599 Fiorano - 1:12,7

    R8 V10 - 1:13,0

    California GT - 1:13,2

    R8 V8 - 1:13,5

    997 Turbo - 1:14,4

This only means that the 458 will be diabolically quick!  competition...

    FERRARI RULES!!!

    Re: California tests

I'm not surprised the Cali is fast and competent, but the reaction among the enthusiast community to the car remains mixed to say the least.  For instance, while doing some research I found there's not a lot of love for the Cali on Fchat. In fact the intensity of emotion is surprising among those who do not accept the "legitimacy" of the car.  I actually like the car and would consider purchasing one. It has a lot of features that not only I, but my wife could enjoy as well. Driving is a pleasure we enjoy together. Perhaps the internet cognoscenti are correct and that's not a good sign about either the car or my virility? We have a new Ferrari dealer opening in December and if possible I plan to arrange a test drive. A local dealer is really a necessity and will make consideration of Ferrari ownership a much greater possibility.

    Re: California tests

FChat mostly hates the California for three reasons:

    - it is an entry level Ferrari so it diminishes the brand

    - it is not pure performance based but has compromised features (softer ride, hardtop)

    - the design is controversial.

Nothing new, it happened before and will happen again. Don't let them fool you, the California is a great car which will bring great joy with its ownership, as many other cars out there will do.

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

One has to realize what Ferrari has stood for so far, those cars were essential and emotional driving machines. That way many men and even more women kept away from the brand, making it a somewhat exklusive experience.

The California put an end to all of these and yet remains adequately fast on the track - despite its certainly sophisticated technology it might be nothing more than a rebadged Maserati for some people.

Ferdie, the Cali might be a good example why all these so called car tests in which some car mags throw any car they can get their hands on around a circuit for one or two hot laps are meaningless in real life.

I think it was the Commendatore himself who once said: it's not important how fast a car can go, it's important how the car goes fast" (or similar...). And meanwhile I spotted 3 or 4 Calis at the 'Ring. I watched them from both perspectives: chasing them on the track Smiley and observing them as a spectator (Wehrseifen corner). Straight line performance is impressive, but once the pilots went for a sporty cornering manoeuvre I didn't believe my eyes: the entire chassis seemed to wobble around like a ten year old S-class Smiley I'm sure the car is able to corner Smiley, but.....it just didn't look like a Ferrari. My wife even thought I was kidding her when mentioning that this is the new F-car model. Of course she's more used to watch the Scuderias at the 'Ring, which definitely do not wobble around Smiley

    Re: California tests

The only real issue with the California is the soft suspension settings the factory have settled on to attract a new type of customer. This could (and hopefully will) be sorted by an HGTE package that includes revised stiffer suspension to reduce body roll in cornering.

I've deliberately avoided the Magnaride shocks on my order as I'm hoping the standard passive suspension will be stiffer in most everyday driving scenarios and if it's not, then hopefully a spring upgrade will help matters. If it's rubbish I'm blaming Kreso for encouraging me to sell my GranTurismo and 430 spider to buy one

Depends on what you expect... Cali is indeed not designed for track usage. There are other car better for that usage-small Lotus models like Exige are first thing on my mind. I personally would not buy something like GT3 RS for track use only since if you crash it then...SmileySmiley

BTW, since you already have R8 4.2 FSI and plan to get 458 Italia I think that Cali will serve you nicelly...Smiley

    Re: California tests

Only joking about blaming you Kreso

The Cali will suit me perfectly as I've no intention of taking it near a track. Holiday trips across Europe and enjoyable days out in the countryside are the duties I have in mind for it. The Scuderia satisfies my Schumaker aspirations and the R8 is just about perfect for a DD with a decent level of comfort, handling and speed and not attracting unwanted or negative attention (even in eye popping green ).

I guess the Cali will be a very nice car exactly for this purpose Smiley
