2006 S or Turbo - Tow Vehicle - Help Me decide

This is my first post, but I've done a lot of reading and searching on this site and a few other sites that cover Cayennes as well as Touaregs. I've also driven a new Touareg, new Q7, new X5, and I'm pretty set on finding a 2006 Cayenne, just torn between whether or not I need an air suspension (really hard to find on the S) and whether or not to go for a Turbo.

A little backround, I currently have a Silverado 1500 truck and a BMW, but want to consolidate to one vehicle that will drive like a car when I'm not towing, but tow my 5,500 lb wakeboard boat to the lake and back. I generally only tow 10 miles to the lake each way on flat country roads, but a few times a year I tow about 300 miles. My main question is, do I really need the air suspension? I've read a lot on people insisting it's needed on the wakeboard sites and a few other sites, but my thinking is my truck doesn't have one, why would my Cayenne need one? If any of you have had good experiences towing with the steel spring suspension, I'd love to hear about it.

My second question is about reliability? Is the S more reliable than the Turbo or vica versa? Are there any potential issues I should look out for in the 2006 version of either? One last question, are these vehicles reliable enough that I would be ok to pick one up with about 40-50,000 miles on it and not need to worry about any major maintancence costs until 100,000 miles plus? or should I try to find a CPO for the warranty?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Hi Steven,

    Welcome to the forum !!

This is my 'two cents', I wouldn't go for a MK1 Cayenne. The MK2 cayenne (07 onwards) has a significant improved drive train, giving you a much better power distribution. The new direct fuel injected V8 is a great improvement as well along with 'lower' fuel consumption. Test drive the MK1 & MK2 and I am sure you know what I mean. Obviously tones of other things are improved on the MK2, not to mention the option of PDCC and upgraded PCM.

Instead of buying the more expensive CTTS06, why not consider an early MK2 CS or CTT, apart from the 'better' looks, you won't be disappointed. IMO airsuspension is a must (PDCC as well), the ride quality is suburb and worth the extra money.

Towing the wake board with either MK1 or Mk2 models wouldn't be an issue, make sure you have the towing kit (as it is an option and costly to retrofit). Also if you have air, you can adjust the ride height to accomodate towing.

I haven't heard about significant problems with the Mk1 or Mk2 Cayennes, obviously the Mk2 as more issues ironed out. Again I would suggest to go for an early CS or CTT Mk2.

    Cheers,

    Mark

My choice would be a MK2 TT. 09 is better unless you don't mind missing out on the new PCM. I would wait a year or so if not in your budget.

Re: 2006 S or Turbo - Tow Vehicle - Help Me decide

Thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it.  Unfortunately 07-08 CT are a little more than I want to spend (expensive boat).  I could swing a 06 CT or possibly an 08 CS.  I'm not as much concerned about the power as I'm confident both the CS and CT will have enough since the 06 CS has about as much output as my truck does now and is as fast as my 3-series.  The tricky part is really finding an air suspension on a CS, I've done a ton of searching and they're really hard to come by, but it appears to me the air suspension was standard in the 06 CT, at least most of the ones I've seen have had it.

My line of thinking with leaning towards an '06my was also that I'll keep it for 3-4 years and then upgrade to a 2010 for the new PCM when people start trading them in.

Re: 2006 S or Turbo - Tow Vehicle - Help Me decide

All turbos have the air suspension. It was a $3k+ option on the S, no one got it else you were better off buying a turbo. If only the 06 TT is in your budget then get that IMHO... Good luck.

Re: 2006 S or Turbo - Tow Vehicle - Help Me decide

    Hi Steven,

Remember also the maintenance cost for a Mk1, I have several colleagues with CTT06 and their water pumps and radiators need replacing, outside warantee this is a costly issue. If raw power is not a great issue I would suggest to look further to get a 07 or 08 CS, great car, has all the improvements of the MK2 (obviously) and you should be able to find one with air as this is very common (I thought)

    Cheers,

replaced my water pump in my 04 cayenneS, seems this is a major gremling with cars built during that periodSmiley

Re: 2006 S or Turbo - Tow Vehicle - Help Me decide

Wanted to thank you guys again for all the responses.  I ended up with a low mileage 06 CTT.  I've only towed with it a little so far, but at first glance it matches up with all the diesel pickups I've towed with in the past.  I do have a certified warranty up till 100,000 miles or 2013 so I'm not too worried about the water pump issue.  Very happy with the performance of the CTT so far though, love it....
