News from the 'Ring - report & pics

As promised in my recent thread about my first 'Ring adventures with my Baby I thought it's time for an update Smiley

Meanwhile I've done 200 laps or so in the Green Hell and it's getting better and better all the time Smiley

Last week I brought the car to Manthey and I cannot speak highly enough of their service and professional attitude. They took a lot of time to discuss all the details with me analysing what kind of set-up would be the best for me.

    The work they've done included:

    > alignment

    > corner balance

    > installation of Cup front splitter and respective readjustment of rear wing

    > installation of "sharper" LSD (somewhere between standard and Cup car)

Of course I was anxious to check how the Baby would behave on the track after the Manthey work, hence I booked a 3 day course (Monday-Wednesday) to check it out Smiley Similar to the Scuderia Hanseat course it was a mix of section training and full laps.

The day before the course I went for a spin on those lovely winding Eifel roads to make myself a bit familiar with the "new" car. After the first corners my wife was already impressed even from the passenger seat feeling: Geeez, the cornering speed without any understeer is crazy Smiley

Next morning the view out of our hotel room showed perfect weather: 1-eifel.jpg

The Chief Instructor of our group was one of the legendary 917 heroes - 5 wins in the 1,000 km race on the 'Ring with the monster Smiley

    Back in 1970:

And last Tuesday after he drove my Baby for a lap Smiley

    3-jürgen.jpg

These heroes from the past are a different breed: when I asked him whether he'd prefer the six pint harness or the regular belt he was laughing - we're going for a nice cruise, no belt needed Smiley

Needless to say that the cruise was somewhat spirited Smiley In some of the corners where you need the big balls he was 10 km/h faster than me Smiley "The car is perfect - If I were to buy a new car it would be the GT3" Smiley

Re: News from the 'Ring - report & pics

    "Findings" during the course:

    (1) The Manthey magic works Smiley Much sharper at corner entry (reducing understeer by a huge margin), super stabile at Schwedenkreuz (Cup splitter + sharper erection at the rear Smiley), lttle bit nervous at the rear under high speed braking (Aremberg, Brünnchen) due to Stabi (not sure what is the right english term) at position "1" (hard), but still easy to handle Smiley

    (2) Performance advantage of GT3 3.8 is relatively small on NoS. Of course the car of our coach (VLN driver) was still on factory alignment - the temps of his wheels (especially on the front axle) were somehat different from mine after we went for 2 fast tandem laps.

    (3) The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup suffer on warm asphalt after some laps (air temp was 25-27 °C on Tuedsday). As Olaf Manthey was eager to hear my comments on the car after his work he took more than an hour on Wednesday to discuss everything with me: simply amazing how he knows every little detail about the car - will post more on that later (gotta go now) Smiley

    (4) NoS against the clockwise direction is fun Smiley As our coach made quite some pace also when driving "backwards" it was a great experience. Hatzenbach upwards is much nicer than the regular way, from Ex-Mühle down to Breidscheid is awesome (some spectators were puzzled..Smiley) and at Pflanzagrten you can jump even if you go the wrong direction Smiley

    (5) After 1,000 km NoS on the first two days of the course my love for both still increased: Nordschleife + GT3 = the ultimate combo Smiley

I realy enjoyed that ...... and like these 'real life' comments that give more informations to ' normal' drivers' then the usual N-Ring test drivers times or magazine reports !

Will I see you in September ?  I will be there from wednesday the 9 th ( at around 14h00) to sunday morning.

Great report P-J, really enjoyed reading it!

Could it be I saw you, or at least your car on wednesday for the evening session? There was a silver GT3 w/striping and Cup splitter in the cue towards the zufahrt, I was in a blue Opel Speedster.

I'll post my little report too.

@Gnil: Are those days public days? I'm planning on returning early september.

Achim, I'm not sure I can read your posts any more.  I get all anxious about a dream that I keep having and your living.  Thanks for the write up.  I've been invited back to the Ring this month but alas I cannot afford it.  In any case hte Rind + GT3 just seems right and I can't have either. lol

Manthey certainly get the thumbs up by all who need a set up on the Ring.

    Enjoy that car of yours.

Re: News from the 'Ring - report & pics

I'm glad you guys liked my little report Smiley

@ Dario: I have no more pics of my friend's white/blue 3.8 GT3, but I'll post some more once I'll have shot them in the upcoming weeks Smiley

@ Reginos: hahaha, I knew this comment would come Smiley BTW one extra bonus of the steeper rear wing is that you can't see the face of the drivers trying to keep up with your car on the track Smiley

@ Joost: I'm sure these extra hours will pay off - Vorfreude is a good thing Smiley

@ fritz: obscene is watching it, not doing it Smiley

@ Gnil: won't participate in the Scuderia course (not trying to go from obscenity to pure perversion Smiley), but I'll make sure that we can meet up on the weekend Smiley

@ Porker: yes I finished off the day with some Touri laps.  Unfortunately they were too many morons on the track - it's a bit stressfull if one wants to go fast. I really was wondering what Walter Röhrl was doing there with this kind of crazy traffic. Could you stay ahead of him ? Smiley I had to give up @ Metzgesfeld Smiley

Too bad that we missed each other - hopefully next time...Smiley

@ Rich: I know how much you'd love to bring your Baby back to the 'Ring and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, buddy Smiley Why is it that so many posers have the means and the time at hand but no driving talent whereas it's just the other way round for a lot of enthusiasts who'd deserve it Smiley

Re: News from the 'Ring - report & pics

    Gauss:

Fantastic write up, Achim! I enjoyed reading every line of it!

I'm particularly interested in reading the follow up story to this :

As Olaf Manthey was eager to hear my comments on the car after his work he took more than an hour on Wednesday to discuss everything with me: simply amazing how he knows every little detail about the car - will post more on that later (gotta go now) Smiley

Some of Olaf's comments on the most important components of the 997.1 GT3:

    (1) Brakes: the ABS is calibrated for street use (has to do something with the "booster" set-up, mind you I'm not a techie - hence I can't explain all the tech details). Anyway while nice on the road it's problematic on the track. Once the ABS is engaged under heavy braking it feels like the brakes are gone - the trick to regain the fantastic braking performance is to instantly LIFT the foot on the brake paddle a bit: then the brakes bite again. Very counter-intuitive IMO. Couple of weeks ago I had such a moment when I went a bit too fast down to Wehrseifen (for those not familiar with the 'Ring: fast downhill section where you have to brake hard to turn into the slowest coner of the 'Ring). Normally I'm quite good in braking just up to the ABS zone (not into it), but this time I overcooked a bit. The ABS braking (or better: lack of braking efficiency) felt terrible and my seat became a bit tight Smiley Olaf said this kind of ABS set-up started with the 996 GT3, but is even worse in the 997 GT3 (not sure about the new 3.8).

    (2) Discs: you can't go wrong with either the factory discs or the Cup discs. I discussed slotted discs with him also. Comment: braking performance equal to the drilled discs. Advantage: no cracks (usually appearing around the wholes in the standard discs), but less performance in the rain.

    (3) Pads: the Pagids (either yellow or orange) are still a good choice, but he very much praised the "Endless" pads. They are pricey (1,600 € for both front and rear), but last 3x as long as any other pads, performance is equal to the Pagids and they are very gentle to the discs (therefore especially recommended to PCCB drivers).

    (4) Tires: MPSC are still the way to go for track oriented drivers. But: the composite of the 19" suffers on hot asphalt. That's not the case for the 18" tires (actually he said the 18" even seem to improve from lap to lap on very hot tarmac). I can confirm his comments on the 19" from my own experiences - they are very temp sensitive. At around 15° C air temp they seemed to grip forever, at 25-27 °C the performance suffered after few hot laps Smiley BTW a friend with a "twin" GT3 was quite pleased with the Toyos (just freshly installed).

    (5) LSD: the factory LSD is not the best for the track - I believed it after watching my right rear tire (much more wear compared to the left one). Hence he recommended a sharper LSD. Initially I was a bit sceptical whether it would be too sharp for me, but I have to say it works like a charm and should pay for itself by saving some rubber Smiley

Funny thing is that my PZ told me already 2,000 km ago that the front brake discs are gone and that I should replace them. Olaf looked at them and grinned: they are good for another 3,000 km (50% road/50% track) Smiley

Just detected some noises today coming from the front of the car. Guess it's a roll bar or something. I think it wasn't a good idea to run through the caroussel at close to 80 km/h with a 100 kg passenger (BTW one of Gnil's competitors in the Swiss Sports Cup Smiley), but of course I had to keep up with my GT3 buddies (who were not carrying the extra weight) Smiley

BTW talking about weight: my luxo GT3 is exactly 100 kg heavier than the factory claimed weight for a "naked" GT3 Smiley But the engine may produce some extra horses: did some runs vs. a "twin" (0-220 km/h) on the Döttinger Höhe and was pleased with the performance Smiley

Re: News from the 'Ring - report & pics

@P-J: So it must have been your GT3 I've seen wednesday, too bad I didn't know your licenseplate, I would've said hello otherwise.. I didn't know der Walter was there too, what car was he in? I'm guessing he's a little out of my league . My pace was somewhat equal to a white Luxemburg registered 997 GT3 RS, I drove behind him for two laps as he drove cautiously but seemed to know his way around, which was interesting for me to get to know the track a little better, a lovely extra is you get to hear that glorious flat-six in stereo everytime he accelerated out of a corner, lovely. I'll PM you next time I'm going, probably first week of september.

You're right there were a lot of morons on track, and apart from that just way to many traffic, especially the motorcycles, each lap I did I saw at least one who just crashed, one lap even three motorcycles and two cars were involved in one crash
