aren't wheel and rim the same thing ?
Funny, I had the same discussion with someone (who happens to be on this forum too) today. To me a wheel has got a rubber bit (the tire) and a metal bit (the rim?). Or what is the correct word for the metal bit?
Both English and German are inconsistent in their use of the words "wheel / rim" and "Rad / Felge" respectively.
In everyday speech in English you'll hear the world "wheel" used for a complete rim and tire, as in "spare wheel", or just for the metal wheel-rim.
Similarly, in German you'll hear the expressions "Komplettrad" or "Reserverad". On the other hand "Rad" is also used to refer to just the metal rim, or " Felge". Funnily enough, even rim manufacturers use the term "Rad" for their products.
The misunderstanding arises here because ResB was using the word "rim" in a different sense to refer to the outer edge of the wheel-rim, if you like, the rim of the rim. "Rim" can also mean "edge", like the "Rand" in "Tellerrand".
