    Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

    From LA Times - 3 March 06

Ferrari Case Takes New Twist With Possible Tie to Bus Agency
The trail leads to a nonprofit operating out of a Monrovia repair shop. More puzzling is its police force and 'anti-terrorism' unit.

As sheriff's detectives investigate last week's crash that destroyed a $1-million Ferrari, they are now looking into an obscure nonprofit organization that provides disabled people with transit in the San Gabriel Valley.

The car's owner, a former video game executive from Sweden, told Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies at the scene of the Feb. 21 accident in Malibu that he was deputy commissioner of the San Gabriel Valley Transit Authority's police anti-terrorism unit, detectives said Thursday.

A few minutes after the crash, two unidentified men arrived at the scene, flashing badges and saying they were from "homeland security," according to Sheriff's Department officials.

Deputies allowed the men into the accident scene, where they spoke to Stefan Eriksson before leaving, Sgt. Phil Brooks said.

Sheriff's officials on Thursday said they now want to question them.

"We would like the public's help with any information about these men or the crash," Brooks said.

They are also looking into the transit organization to see what connection, if any, it has to the case. Brooks said detectives believe the two men from "homeland security" received their badges from the transit authority.

No one was injured when the rare Ferrari Enzo traveling 162 mph smashed into a power pole on Pacific Coast Highway. But the case continues to generate interest because the Ferrari is one of only 400 built, and detectives have struggled to understand what happened.

Eriksson told investigators he was a passenger in the Ferrari and that the driver was a man named Dietrich, who fled from the scene. But officials have been skeptical, noting that Eriksson had a bloody lip and the only blood found was on the driver's side airbag.

On Thursday, Brooks said detectives now doubt initial reports that the Ferrari was racing a Mercedes SLR. Detectives had interviewed a second man who said he was a passenger in a Mercedes SLR that he said was racing the Ferrari at the time.

"There was no Mercedes SLR," Brooks said. "Simply, there was a Ferrari with two people in it. One of these men was driving."

Just as murky is Eriksson's connection to the San Gabriel Valley Transit Authority.

The organization is a privately run nonprofit that has agreements with Monrovia and Sierra Madre to provide bus rides for disabled residents.

On its website, the San Gabriel Valley Transit Authority lists its address as 148 E. Lemon Ave. in Monrovia. The location is Homer's Auto Service, an auto repair shop.

A transit authority bus was parked in one of its driveways, but nothing on the storefront indicated it was a headquarters for the agency. Inside, a young woman, who declined to give her name, said she was a dispatcher for the transit authority. She telephoned someone she said was an agency official, who declined to be interviewed.

According to the website, the organization also has its own police department with a chief, detectives and marked police cruisers. Sheriff's investigators said Eriksson told deputies that he was deputy commissioner of the department's anti-terrorism unit.

But Monrovia Police Chief Roger Johnson said he found that the department is less than meets the eye.

"I don't know if they have a police department to go with the website," he said.

In a brief interview, transit authority board member Yosuf Maiwandi said Eriksson had helped the police department's anti-terrorism unit with camera technology for the paratransit vehicles.

Eriksson's civil attorney, Ashley Posner, is chairman of the transit authority board. Posner declined to comment; Eriksson's criminal attorney did not return calls seeking comment.

Officials in cities where the agency does business said they didn't know why a small transit authority needs a police department.

"We do not see the need for a ground transportation system for handicapped and disabled folks to have a police agency," Monrovia City Manager Scott Ochoa said. "We warned them that if the police agency operated with them in the city of Monrovia, it would jeopardize their [transit] agreement with us."

It remains unclear how Eriksson, who lives in a gated Bel-Air estate, came to work with the transit agency.

Alan Deal, spokesman for the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, said he has never heard of the transit authority's police department. Most police agencies are part of the commission, which governs training standards for officers in the state.

But Deal said some specialized departments are not members, and there are provisions in state public utilities law that allow for transit police agencies to be run by private transit providers.

Sheriff's Sgt. Brooks said Eriksson voluntarily gave a DNA swab, which will be used to determine whether his blood was on the driver's side airbag.

Eriksson had a blood-alcohol level of 0.09% - just over the 0.08% limit - and could face drunk driving charges if he was the driver, Brooks said.

Another mystery is the Glock ammunition magazine found near the crash. Brooks said detectives believe it's connected to the crash but don't know how.

Sounds like an episode of "24"... Can't wait for next week's installment!

Re: Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

What a mess. They should call Grissom to come from Vegas and solve that case.I guess that the investigation would have been much faster for a Lada crash.

Re: Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

    Bizzare

Re: Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

Sounds like someone with a good understanding of municipal law has attached themselves to this transit authority in order to create their own little private police force. It isn't hard to imagine how that might be helpful to someone with significant financial resources and criminal contacts who wanted access to privileged information or the ability to move things or people across borders without the normal level of supervision the rest of us are subjected too.

Did you wreck your car under unusual circumstances? Had some cargo or other evidence at the scene you need cleaned up? Fortunately you planned ahead and have your own local pseudo-valid police force to "assist" the more traditional officers with that process. Of course, the doofus that left the Glock magazine after presumably picking up the actual pistol may not get a perfect score at his next performance review with the "chief of police."

It is fun to speculate Jim...thanks for posting this.

MC, those guys will need a telephone book full of criminal defense attorneys. Im sure this accident has triggered a flood of federal and state investigations into them and that city government for ....

Beyond simple traffic offenses, they get to play tag with the ATF - potential fraudulent purchase and illegal transfer of small arms using police letterhead that may include NFA controlled weapons and explosives, the Cal state DOJ for fraudulent access to the NCIC database, The Fed DOJ for fraud and misuse of homeland security funds, US DOT for the Ferrari itself, US Customs for not paying required import duties on the car, the Treasury Department for currency transfers, the FBI for civil government corruption and a RICO criminal enterprise, the IRS for tax evasion on money from their police "agency" and on and on.They will all be there crawling up those guys shorts to investigate for that and more.

So far that adds up to a total of three people.

But thats enough for me to defeat Howard Dean in the next Iowa caucuses or Al Gore in his home state.

    Hahahaha!

Re: Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

Got weirder still. Today on the LA news they announced that authorities now understand that there may be a VIDEO that was shot in the Enzo during the racing down Pacific Coast Highway. Stand by for the next news conference!

Re: Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

    Cool!

I hope the audio is in Swedish!

The details form the LA Times....

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's investigation into a mysterious crash that destroyed a rare $1-million Ferrari in Malibu last month is now focusing on a videotape that was purportedly shot from inside the vehicle at the time of the accident, according to sources close to the case.

The sources said that Ferrari owner Stefan Eriksson and the other man in the car, identified by authorities as Trevor Karney, had a video camera rolling as they raced on Pacific Coast Highway on the morning of Feb. 21 at speeds in excess of 162 mph.

Deputies who arrived at the scene did not recover any video equipment. But sources said detectives were later told that the high-speed driving was taped. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is under investigation.

The revelation is the latest twist in a crash that has prompted both an accident investigation and a probe by the Sheriff's Department's Homeland Security Division.

Although no one was injured in the crash, the investigation has generated significant attention because of the strange circumstances and the fact that it destroyed one of only 400 Enzo Ferraris ever made.

Eriksson, a former European video game executive, told deputies who arrived at the scene that he was not the driver and that another man, named Dietrich, was behind the wheel. Eriksson said Dietrich fled the scene.

But detectives have always been skeptical of his version of events. Investigators have taken a swab of Eriksson's saliva to match his DNA against blood found on the driver's side air bag of the Ferrari.

Eriksson also told deputies that he was a deputy commissioner of the police department of a tiny transit agency in the San Gabriel Valley.

A few minutes after the crash, two men arrived at the crash scene, identified themselves as homeland security officers and spoke to Eriksson at length before leaving.

Sheriff's Sgt. Phil Brooks said Wednesday that a few weeks before the accident, Eriksson was pulled over in West Hollywood without a driver's license.

At that time he told officers that he was a deputy police commissioner of the anti-terrorism unit of the San Gabriel Valley Transit Authority and showed a badge, Brooks said.

Before coming to the U.S., Eriksson lived in England. According to Noel Hogan, a British private investigator, formerly with Scotland Yard, Eriksson once told him that he was a police officer. Hogan had been trying to recover a Mercedes SLR worth more than $450,000 that had been reported stolen in England and which Eriksson had in his possession.

Officials at the transit agency, which provides transportation for the disabled and elderly from Monrovia, said Eriksson was given the title of deputy police commissioner after undergoing a background check and offering the agency free video security cameras for its five buses.

Eriksson left video game machine manufacturer Gizmondo last fall after a Swedish newspaper printed allegations of his criminal past.

Brooks said Swedish police have informed sheriff's investigators that Eriksson served five years in prison in the early 1990s for a counterfeiting-related crime.

Gizmondo, which hoped to compete with Sony and Nintendo gaming machines, earlier this year filed for bankruptcy amid more than $200 million in debts.

An animated re-creation of the crash made available to The Times on Thursday shows the driver of the Ferrari losing control, veering right off the road and then traveling a considerable distance before hitting a power pole and splitting the sports car in half. "Anyone in that was lucky to survive," Brooks said.

Brooks said officials were aware that a Scottish bank has claimed that it owns the Ferrari.

Eriksson could face several charges if deputies determine he was driving, including reckless driving, driving while intoxicated and lying to investigators. In the aftermath of the crash, his blood-alcohol level was found to be 0.09%, above the 0.08% legal limit. Eriksson could not be reached for comment.

Re: Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

It seems that Mr. Eriksson has been arrested now.

    According to CBS:

After a lengthy investigation, there's been an arrest in the February crash of an exotic $1 million Ferrari in Malibu. Stefan Eriksson was served a search warrant at his Bel Air home Saturday night and booked on suspicion of grand theft.

It wasn't immediately clear whether sheriff's investigators suspect Eriksson stole the Ferrari.

The 44-year-old Swedish video game entrepreneur is being held without bail and authorities have also placed an immigration hold on him.

Eriksson was in a red Ferrari Enzo that was traveling over 160 miles an hour when it hit a pole along Pacific Coast Highway and all but disintegrated. He escaped the crash with only a cut lip.

Eriksson originally told authorities he was a passenger in the car and that the driver, a German acquaintance he knew only as Dietrich, ran into the nearby hills after the crash. Dietrich was never found.

Litte sidenote: rumor has it, that Mr. Eriksson didn't pay the bill for three sportscars imported from the UK to the US. It seems that they were registered as "stolen" in the UK. There also seems to be something wrong with the Visa status and apparently there is also an ongoing investigation regarding his company and the fact that these cars were bought/registered for the company.

Of course we'll never know the truth but I have to say that I'm surprised to see and hear that an apparently succesful and intelligent person can be THAT dumb, sorry to say that. After the Enzo crash, he should have known that the authoroties would have a closer look on him, especially since his crash made it to the press. But apparently he underestimated the situation, bad luck.

FYI: Yes, Mr Eriksson appears to be successful, but the reason behind his "success" is very questionable. He comes from a city called Uppsala in Sweden, where he was a part of the local maffia. Somehow (I don't know how) he managed to become a businessman and attain very high positions within a couple of companies.

Re: Ferrari Crash - Wierd Update

If a novelist were to submit this story to his publisher he'd get it rejected immediately because it was too incredible for its readers to take it seriously.

I think you answered yourself, how he could aquainte such high position in short time.
