    California AMS test

    0-100km/h: 4.1s

    0-.160km/h: 9.2s

    0-200km/h:14.7s

    Weight: 1795kg

    Overall verdict: 4 starts(out of 5)

Drive dynamics good but, not excellent. Suspension too soft with much roll in curves. ISO test results are nothing special.

Engine powerfull but, with not the very best laufkultur(engine mehcanical smoothness). DCT fast and good.

    Brakes(CCM) very good.

Build quality true horror-test car almost fell apart. For those with printed AMS look at some pics and final comment in German.

About that "Laufkultur" issue... I noticed that also on my Cali test drive. Somehow engine is not as good in mechanical smoothness(please, notice that it means producing some unpleasent vibrations at idle or in all rev range) it not in the same league as F430 engine for example.

R8 5.2 FSI is much, much better here. Example is R8 5.2 FSI is 10 points in this regard then F430 or R8 4.2 FSI are 8.5 points and California is 7.5 and this is not my impression only.

    Re: California AMS test

"laufkultur" could be translated as mechanical/engine refinement in english.

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

    Re: California AMS test

Quattroruote clocked the California at 3.9s for the first 100 km/h from a standstill, 8.5s for the 0-160 dash and 13.4s for the 0-200. I also find the refinement remarks appalling; it's a Ferrari and it is supposed to be brutal!!!

    Re: California AMS test

I took your advice Kreso and traded my 430 spider and GranTurismo and ordered a California for November build. I'd agree with the rough engine idle. The test car I drove sounded like it had the tappet noise you used to hear in old worn engines. Once on the move it becomes a lot more pleasant.

Do you know if the AMS test car had magnaride? The demo I drove did and I hated it. The ride was far too floaty even in sport mode for my taste giving an impression of loose body control and didn't give confidence when pressing on in tight bends. I've opted for the standard mechanical suspension which I hope makes the ride far closer to that of the 430.

    Re: California AMS test

FWIW one of the US car magazines compared the CA GT to the AMG 63 and found them equal in most respects. The CA Gt won by a very small margin. However the price differential was fairly significant in favor of the AMG 63.

ISUK, you must have other reasons for buying the CA GT other than performance. I found the 430 Spider much more fun and exciting to drive.

I, Magnaride I think. Just, problem is that Cali feels too soft for Ferrari IMHO even with standard suspension.

Do not get me wrong-I am with you on your trade move!Smiley

BTW, if you can go for R8 V10. Drove it-OMG... Fantastic is the word! Manual of course.

    Re: California AMS test

    Nick,

I decided it filled my sunny day out and European holiday touring car needs better than the spider and Maserati. It's great to be able to drop the top and cruise on some nice country roads. I found I was using the spider all the time and leaving my Scuderia in the garage too often and that is just wrong, wrong, WRONG! Smiley I figure that the Cali and Scuderia will give me a much better balance of cars than 430 Spider and Scuderia did.

I plan on getting the F450 coupe next year then trading it for a F450 spider if/when that model is released. That should compensate for giving up my spider now.

    Kreso,

The R8 V10 spider looks very tempting Smiley

It's looking bare now with the GranTurismo and 430 spider having gone this week. I need to restock it Smiley

That makes a lot of sense. I suspect you also are concerned about the resale value of your 430 Spider. I can relate. I burned a few dollars selling mine.

I am on the "list" for the 450 coupe. However, since I have always been a Spider guy I may wait awhile

    Re: California AMS test

Resale was a concern Nick. The 430 is starting to look dated now and I was keen to get out before the F450 breaks cover. Like you I prefer the spider as I find I've used the open top variants of my exotics far more than the coupe versions.

The Cali is a lot softer than the 430 and because you sit further back in the wheelbase you don't have that feeling of being connected directly to the front wheels through the steering. It's a more involving car to drive than the Maserati though and I think I'll get a lot of use out of it. Time will tell. Rod Stewart's Cali had arrived at the dealer who is selling my spider but I didn't bother to look at it. It's grigio alloy with crema apparently..... not my favourite colours.

    Re: California AMS test

I almost order those colors for my 360. Then I saw one in those colors and changed my order quickly. They are very feminine colors.

Very bad interior noises, switches droping out of their place etc. Build quality bad in general...
