    engine waterboarding

Can' t believe Porsche allows water directly into the engine thru the fan opening.  I guess that's OK when engine running, but not when parked.  Seems like they could have a closure there if key off and engine not hot.

Florida rain water pours into mine and dries out the engine belt.  After a rain, the belt squeaks bad and used to go away and then finally stayed loud.  Took a whole can of belt-lube to stop the crappy squealing. At first with a little lub, the squeal got worse and worse....but then with more and more, the nice finally disappeared.

Porsche says belt is glazed and will be replaced under warranty.and shouldn't squeal from just rain water. They say the belt is glazed.  I have to wait now until it starts squealing again if I go this route.

Can't believe water in an engine can do anything but harm.  When washing now I place a rubber door mat over the vents, but that's a lot of trouble to do when the car is parked and is standing in the rain overnight or even for 2-3 hours.  This is almost ridiculous especially for a +$130 vehicle....never had a car that allowed rain water to pour all over the engine..

What is everybody else doing out there with these costly engines?  In most cases has the squeaking disappeared with driving or do you put up with the wretched squeal??

If you leave your car outside at night, you could always look into getting an outdoor, water-repellent cover for the car.

This is the 1st time I hear this. 996s have the engine cover slats pointing backward and they may allow some water in (they do when washed) but 997s have the slats facing backwards and there should be no water infiltration unless shot horizontally from the back.

Thanks but that is no answer.  I have tried covers and they are more trouble to wrap up an re-store especially when wet.  I am just surprised my turbo is an isolated incident....seems like with that size opening, many more squeaky belts would be reported.  Can't imagine another car in the world that rain water is allowed to spread all over the engine when vehicle parked in rain/snow storms..

Your theory works fine when engine/car is moving, but when parked and engine stopped, there is nothing to re=route the water from running all over the belt, pulleys and engine.  Maybe Porsche fabric belts are designed to get wet and still run without squealing??
