An Amazing story of a Panther tank that fell into a Polish River during a battle and stayed submerged for 50 years to be taken to California to be rebuilt. It was rebuilt by a team of talented machinists led by a welathey collector.
It took many years and is now basically a new Panther though running on the original engine. Ironically it was finished at about the same time as the owner passed away.
Amazing story;

this is just so so sad, I can't imagine how the owner feels, must be a very tough day for him, even if insurance covers everything (which I am sure it will, when talking about an Enzo of $1.500.000)....
What a sad day indeed !!!!, what is the matter with Ferraris??, how can a car that is drived very rarely, in other words, a garage queen, and with a price tag so high that you could buy instead several houses and some cars, and still finish into flames SO SO EASY?????......
If I was an Enzo owner, or cgt owner, etc.....my first thing to install in the car would be at least TWO fire-extinguisers, both below the drivers seat to react as quick as possible !!!
Hopefully, IF he had it insured for market value - approx $1-$1.2.
Man, can you imagine how bummed that guy must be. Man! That bites.

Yes there is a 1 hour show with great animation showing the panthers in battle in poland in the snow and how they believe the tank ended up in the river. It used to be on youtube but not anymore.
These clips take up where the show left off years ago showing the detail of the finished product. These guys are awesome mechanics and machinists.
A panther tank would be cool to have. I have to stood next to 2 of them, the nicest in england. Damn good looking tank.

928's are built like panzers
Too bad then... Those T34s had Panzers and Tigers for breakfast...
Too bad you got your facts backward. Tigers were untouchable by T-34's, T 34-85's had a little better chance but still no luck head on. The combination of thick frontal armor and the marvelous german 88 was no match for russian armor.
In fact during Kursk, in the southern salient the russians resorted to ramming their t-34's full blast into the tigers in desperation. Most amazing battle of all modern warfare.
I have stood inside the turret of the last functioning Tiger in the world and looked down and over that 88's barrell, quite a feeling.
Here is the King Tiger, one of these took out an entire column of soviet tanks including stalin heavy tanks in one battle. 26 soviet tanks destroyed and 1 unscathed king tiger. Their problem was lack of volume and air cover.
some say the best looking tank of all time;
Very weird. Also saw a show on this, this past weekend on "Commanders at War" - The Battle at Kursk. Greatest Tank battle of all time.
It's on again tomorrow or you could watch in 6 parts on youtube --- /Love these type of shows: They go into the Russian Vs German tanks in the show.

Just watched that commanders at war Kursk show. They did a good job.
Like I had typed before it was the southern pincer led by the 3 best divisions the germans had LAH, DR, and T that did all the damage. And combined these 3 divisions only had less than 40 tiger tanks. When damaged they would be repaired.
Germany's Foreign Minister was a guy named von ribbentrop. His son was a tiger tank commander at this battle. And like the british general says on that show, to imagine what was going on there is almost impossible.
If there had been a color camera filming that battle it would be something to see. Had the germans had 400 tigers instead of 40 things would have probably turned out different.
If you could duplicate the tank posts and put them in a tank thread in O/T that would be nice.
We had 1 back in rennteam 1 that I searched for and could not find.
But we have covered most everything important about tanks right here - the best historical tanks, the largest, most impressive tank battle ever, and that fascinating rebuild of the Panther,
Tanks are like sports cars on steroids. I think it would be tough to find someone who liked cars and working on them but didn't like tanks and fighter planes. They all go together.
Hey racerx the man who restored that panther actually lived and has his museum in the town next to mine. My brother went on a guided tour last weekend. The pictures I saw were incredible, I will try to post some if I get a chance. I believe there are numerous videos on youtube including the owner's funeral procession. As per his wishes, his coffin was placed on the back of an M551 Sheridan and driven around his massive estate.
