Great photos - many thanks for posting!

Also looking forward to checking out any pics of the new GT3 in black!

Re: cdixon road trip to Leipzig

@cdixon: thanks v much for sharing your experience

A question: how much tyre tread wear and brake pad wear did you experience as a result of doing the course?

Re: cdixon road trip to Leipzig

Brakes not to much (about 1.5mm)

Tyre wear:- about half the tread  !!! Mainly on the outer edges from driving hard on the corners.. the car has done a total of 6500 miles and i think i will need new in about 4000 miles

Interestingly they did a G Force curse a couple of weeks ago and all customers needed two sets of rears during the two day course !!!!!

The Porsche centre at Silverstone is better than Leipzig for this as they have the low friction circuits for drifting and learning oversteer / understeer, however Leipzig has probably the best track that i have ever driven on as they have built it to include many of the famous bends from race circuits around the world.

If i went to Leipzig again i would rent one of their cars. For about 500 euros you can hire a Carrera for the day and that covers insurance, petrol, tyres..

    My expenses were as follows:-

    620 Euro on fuel

    250 on Track insurance

over half the life taken off my tyres !!!

Still well worth it for the experience !!

Next year i am thinking about doing the Master class at the ring. This is on a closed day with an instructor leading the way so you get a nice clear track and help learning the best lines around the ring !! Call me a chicken but i do not like the ring on public days !!!

Re: cdixon road trip to Leipzig

Ok guys i will put the pics up of the Black GT3, and complete the rest of this thread when i get more time !!

Re: cdixon road trip to Leipzig

    @cdixon: interesting info - thanks

    Is this calculation correct:

Total mileage: 6500 miles so far (made up of 1998 miles on this trip i.e. about 4502 miles before you went on the trip?)

And I assume half the tyre tread wear has been worn in the total 6500 miles usage so far (not half tyre tread wear in just the 1998 miles of your trip)

    i.e. 4mm out of 8mm over 6500 miles?

I'm interested in this because I'm going to be doing some PSDS courses too so I need to decide what to do about tyres...

BTW where did you get track insurance from?

    Cheers Smiley

My tyres were in great condition before i left as the car had only done motor way miles and never been driven hard. so i guess a little wear on the first 4500 miles, but most of the wear on the 300 or so track miles.. If you look at the tyres all the edges are completely scrubbed !!

The problem is in some ways this driver training is harder than a track day on your tyres as you are breaking the circuit down and driving each bend at least 10 times to get the best racing line at maximum speed.

I have added a pic of my tyre at the front but you can't see much.

Some of the bends they have are as follows:-

Loews hair pin ( very hard on tyres as it is at the end of a long straight which you get to at approx 200kph, you then break hard and heel and toe to second)

    Mobil1 S very fast 'S' bend

Suzuka S again very fast 'S' bend

Suntory Corner (Hardest course on the track as you enter in third break on the slight straight then heel and toe into second (assuming you don't have the playstation gear box !!!)

Sorry mate missed this off the bottom of your post...

Insurance from CCI (Competitive Car Insurance). These guys seem ok but watch the small print on others as they may only pay upto £25 an hour for labour if repairs are required !!! Also all track insurance is only first party, unless you have Porsche insurance and are doing the Porsche events in the Uk, in which case you have full cover.

If your Porsche course is in the UK then i would use your own car, if in Europe then i would think about renting one of theirs. The Cayman S is a little cheaper than 911 and just as much fun !!!!

Thanks for clarifying. That's very useful to know Smiley

I may be mistaken but I would assume that 1-2mm (out of 8mm) were used in your first 4500 miles while about 2-3mm were used in your 2000 mile trip (inc on track time). That's about what I would have expected Smiley

Re: cdixon road trip to Leipzig

That seems like a logical conclusion.

I am looking into booking the performance course at the moment with Porsche Silverstone. About £1800 for two days including two 1 hour sessions on the Silverstone circuit at lunch times when it is free from other traffic. This price is also one to one tuition not like Leipzig where it is group tuition.

Re: cdixon road trip to Leipzig

Thanks for the pictures, that GT3 is insane!!!  Also I like very much the old VW prototypes and the first 911... Thanks again!!

As long as you can read "Pilot Sport" they are still o.k. Smiley Slow in - fast out at Loews helps a bit to save the edges (I spotted tons of rubber there at the end of the Performance Training in April), but then your brake discs may have developed some heat cracks Smiley

Thanks, cdixon - great report and pics Smiley

The Touareg was a prototype used to prove the vehicle can drive on anything, the tracks can be replaced with wheels.....
