    1-0 to Porsche Smiley

     This is a bit surprising...

    Re: Audi R8 R-Tronic vs Porsche 997 Carrera 2 S PDK

    That was quick.

R8's got the drama, 997's got the power. Smiley

No, the official numbers put the Carrera S in front of the R8 anyway. And the CS.2 is damm fast !!!!

    Re: Audi R8 R-Tronic vs Porsche 997 Carrera 2 S PDK

997 Carrera S was a tad faster than R8 4.2 and as numbers suggest 997.2 Carrera S with PDK is faster for sure but I didn't expect that of a difference.

Even this performance differance alone proves that the price of the R8 over an 911 Carrera S is ridicolous. Even if I like R8 and prefer it to my ex 997 Carrera S, 20% more money for R8 is unbelieveable.

In the end it is the slower car and it is an Audi.

The PDK is indeed great but the paddle-directions sucks. Had the car last weekend, the speed of the PDK is obsolet as before pressing the shift button I have to think 5 seconds in which direction I have to press the shift-button. So - as fast as the shift-timing is, as much time I lose while using this system!

    Re: Audi R8 R-Tronic vs Porsche 997 Carrera 2 S PDK

I was very surprised by the large gap that opened up by the end of the video.

Porsche is cheaper, faster and has more prestige. One would have to really like the look of the R8 or have a strong preference for its mid-engine layout to justify choosing it over a Porsche IMHO.

You have put it very nicely what I was trying to say Smiley

Up until yesterday I'd probably have agreed with you Smiley  but after having my R8 delivered and taking it out for a good long drive last night I can honestly say Kreso was/is spot on about this car. It's brilliant.

I've owned a 997 C2 tip, 997 C2S and 997 turbo and I can honestly say I prefer this car to all of them... even the turbo Smiley The noise, power delivery, 8000 RPM redline, manual gearbox, build quality, ride comfort and cabin design are all superb. You just need to get it in a suitable colour for it all to make sense Smiley

    Re: Audi R8 R-Tronic vs Porsche 997 Carrera 2 S PDK

what would you say the difference would be with a manual?

PDK should be available for the new gt3

I knew the mk2 carrera S with PDK, was going to be faster, but not that FAST!!

Lars, I use the PDK every day and have had none of the problems you encountered! Perhaps it is because it was not your regular car and you had no familiarity

Anyway as from 02/10 a +/- paddle shifter will become an option.

    Re: Audi R8 R-Tronic vs Porsche 997 Carrera 2 S PDK

I am surprised by this massive advantage the 997s has over the R8 Smiley

This looks like 50-80hp more (in the same car). AWD, the gear-box, the higher weight and (in the higher speed-range) aerodynamics add up to a massive disadvantage. Quite a surprise to see it that clearly.

    Hi Reginos,

Im used to the paddles since couple of years. Had a M3, F430 and even today the 535 and Mini S have paddles. All in the other directions. And yes - you are probably right, it was a test weekend and I have to tell you, that the first day sucked that much that I didnt use it anymore in the second day and only drove automatic from them on.

I guess, if I would own such a car I would somehow get used to it. And of course - the PDK is such great that simply this tranny gives reason enough for an car-upgrade. For me its a must have in the next one and if they make the paddles with the "other" directions available even better!

I think the paddles on the optional sport wheel as from Febr. 2010 will be right +, left -, so they should be OK for most people.

The direction of the stick, we don't know. But probably it will still be push for up and pull for down. I noticed that VW uses the same direction too.

And same for the S-Tronic box in Audi.
