2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

After 4 flyaway races, F1 returns to Europe. Smiley

I'm interested to see all the upgrades that the teams are making to their cars for Barcelona. It will shake things up nicely. Smiley

Hopefully, now that the McLaren scandal and the rear diffuser controversy are both over, we can focus only on the racing with no further legal controversies for the time being. Smiley

What amazes me is how easily and completely Max Mosley has been embraced back into the F1 fraternity.

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

I am tipping Brawn to still be the dominating force along with RBR and Toyota for at least another 2-3 races.

Proof of the  "special" relationship between Ferrari and F1:

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

Lewis Hamilton is already playing down his chances at this weekend's race by saying that the main improvements to his car were already added in Shanghai and Bahrain...

I'm interested to see whether BMW Sauber has used its time productively over the last 2 weeks. The only way they can go is up...

Let's see if Ferrari and Renault can step up....

Apparently Brawn has some more improvements - having not made any in the 4 flyaway races....

I wonder, why no Mercedes sign/badge/name on the Brawn bodywork?

It wasn't part of the deal perhaps?

I'm sure Ross would agree to put the name on the car if, in return, Mercedes were to allow him to use the engines without payment. Smiley

They could perhaps give him a discount in exchange of a small sticker!

Most casual F1 TV viewers don't know that the car that won 3 races is powered by Mercedes.

I am sure very few people have noticed this, unlike McLaren. Not avid F1 viewers of course but the majority of Sunday F1 fans.

The people who draw up the stats will just want to list the engine manufacturer for readers' information, but the Brawn team does not mention Merccedes in its own web site. It calls itself Brawn GP. That will not change unless Mercedes pushes some cash across the table.

There is no charity in F1, much as Mercedes might need it at the moment.

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

Wow - a last moment pole position for Jenson

Brawn, Red Bull, Toyota and Williams continue to look strong.

Ferrari is catching up - Massa did a good job while Kimi miscalculated disastrously.

Renault and BMW Sauber look quite good: only 0.095 secs difference between Alonso and Piquet. Not such a big gap - so that will help Piquet fight to stay in F1.

McLaren, Toro Rosso and Force India look like they are really struggling.

Oh well - hopefully it will be a good race  Watch out for a possible fast start by Vettel overtaking Button off the grid... we'll know what the fuel adjusted qualifying performances were soon enough....

Surely the big threat off the line is Massa given he has Kers?

Amazing last minute drive by Jenson though

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

Are you entertained Bernie? Am certainly not and neither is anyone else besides the Brawn team and Button's family. Brawn is a new found team without heritage or a history and them winning every race doesn't trigger any emotions or butterflies in anyone. Half the grand stands at Barcelona were empty and I can see the same fate for Turkey, Germany and many other race weekends.

I welcome underdogs but how fun is F1 when a new team with very old drivers are a light years ahead of everyone, facing zero competition at all. If there wasn't a ban imposed on in-season training then at least the other team would have a chance to catch up and challenge. These days the thrill of watching F1 is not in watching Brawn win but to see how Ferrari will cock up.

Brawn is just a fad. Given that they are only contracted to get a supply of Mercedes engines for this year, they can forget about getting any next year given how they have performed this year. They will have to opt for the Cosworth engine which I doubt will deliver the same reliability as the German sledge hammer. Rules are changing for next year as well and without Honda money they will need a serious injection of cash for developing next years car. Their present is gloomy but their future is looking foggy.

Expect the F1 hierarchy to be restored next year.

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

What a great result for Button and for Brawn Mercedes  4 wins out of 5 races. Superb

I can't believe Ferrari's continued mistakes: Kimi failing to progress from Q1 to Q2 by mistakenly thinking his Q1 lap was quick enough and then, after making up numerous places in the race itself, his car suffered mechanical problems. Poor Massa - insufficient fuel added in a pit stop - all that hard work was washed away. Changing the Ferrari pit crew hasn't had the right effect perhaps?

It seems that Alonso (and Spanish sponsor Banco Santander) are heading for Ferrari. The only mystery is whether it is 2010 or 2011:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/05/alonso-a-banker-for-ferrari-mo.html

Webber's audacious overtaking manoeuvre over Alonso on the start/finish straight was the most amazing moment in the race for me. Amazing

I enjoyed today's race. It was a sad thing to see a 'fan' with his face blackened. I thought that the fringe racism problem had been dealt with... but sadly not Smiley

Every new team needs time to make its own 'history'. There was a time when even Ferrari and McLaren were new to motorsport

    Go Jenson Smiley

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

I welcome Brawn to the F1, I really love it that the new guy is able to break up the "inner circle" that F1 has become in the last years.

The big teams together with FIA made a mistake by introducing KERS, intended to preserve the domination of the "old" teams.

I really start to believe this is a paradigm shift in F1 and the "old" teams will have to change to catch up again.

Great race Brawn-GP, today you demonstrated that you are two steps ahead of the others and not just a lucky beginner

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

Some people say this year's F1 is crap because the B teams win and the A teams are nowhere to make competition interesting.

However, all teams had to develop cars under the same rules, so why McLaren and Ferrari didn't come up with the right solutions? Their fault.

I like Ross Brawn and Jenson Button so good luck to them until the end(?). Besides they are powered by Mercedes which is good enough for me

What exhilarates me is the lack of performance and organisation on behalf of Ferrari (so far at least). They are back to the "spaghetti culture"  (Lauda's words not mine) from which they suffered in the 80s and early 90s until the Schumacher Era. They need new people both in management and in the cockpit in order to advance.

Yep - I thought that Niki Lauda's description of the "spaghetti culture" really struck a nerve with Stefano Domenicali back in Bahrain. He seemed really upset, angry and rattled by it.

Re: 2009 Spanish F1 Grand Prix in Barcelona

Well, it shows us that big names and much money is NOT enough to win F1 races. If Ferrari won despite the disastrous decisions or McLaren/Mercedes despite the crappy management, that would not be a sport.

Every once in a while, good teams need a kick in their ... to get their act together. Granted, maybe a little less kicking would have been enough, but they'll recover and it's good for F1 in the long run.

Well, Ferrari have a "Spaghetti Culture", Alonso comes from a place full of uneducated people, even a monkey could drive a modern F1 car...right or not (and usually he's not right at all) you can't take Lauda's comments very seriously.

I think Gangajas is just quoting comments made by Niki Lauda, who has a long history of providing journalists with "borderline" quotations.     Smiley
