    2010 Formula 1 Budget Cap - GBP 40 million

I'm very uneasy about this new development:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8025566.stm

It is deliberately creating a two-tier grid: 1) richer teams that do not agree to the cap will have much stricter technical limitations, whereas 2) teams agreeing to stay within the GBP 40 million budget cap will have much greater technical freedom.

If the two categories were racing on the same track BUT within their own categories, then IMO that would be fine. Like different categories within the same Le Mans 24 hours event.

However, teams from both categories will be competing together. This is not a level playing field. Different budgets and different rules. It will lead IMO to strange discrepancies in performance.

Category 1 teams' performance will be limited by technical limitations. Category 2 teams' performance will be limited only by the GBP 40 million cap. It's intrinsically unfair IMO.

Re: 2010 Formula 1 Budget Cap - GBP 40 million

This is totally ridiculous. I miss the times where F1 was the pinnacle of Motorsports and the drivers had to tame the beats with +900hp in a manual shifting mode with 6000 shifts in Monaco sitting in a aluminium chassis with +300 km/h. Nowadays playstation boys talk about balance problems and that the 2nd set of tires did not fit the set up bla bla bla...

F1 is - despite finally not Silver or red leading for a change - boring as never before.

Now they want 1 engine producer, no fuelstops, etc etc....why dont they just all buy a tesla roadster and who's battery last longest (thanks to a superior KERS) wins.....I am sure its a spectacle that draws millions of people in front of the TV.....and justifies 20 Mio plus salary for Kimi,Alonso,Hamilton & Co....

    F1 going downhill big time....

    Ferrari oppose, as expected.

IMO you can have excellent racing without spending fortunes. Like spending $2million to save 50 grams or something ridiculous like that.

In any business activity and in life in general there are budgets, why not in F1?

Re: 2010 Formula 1 Budget Cap - GBP 40 million

they have budgets today too.....you cannot spend more than yr sponsors etc are willing give you - so in these times n future it will be less anyway....

Re: 2010 Formula 1 Budget Cap - GBP 40 million

Yes, but Ferrari's and Mercedes budgets have no upper limits, it seems. How can the others compete? They just fill the grid.

It's the same situation in football, for example, that you get one or two teams spending without limit and the rest make up the numbers.

Re: 2010 Formula 1 Budget Cap - GBP 40 million

I oppose the budget cap.  I mean, imagine if the IOC tells every country that they have a cap amount on training their atheletes so that China/US will not be the dominant force in the next Olympics games and will give poorer countries a chance to compete.  Utter rubbish.
