Thinking of buying this Audi R8

I test drove this car today thanks to my friend who is a sales manager with a large dealer group. I have to say I was very impressed with the car and really could see it being an everyday driver. Do existing owners have any feedback - positive or negative - on this model and would you recommend it.

The colour is special order Java Green and looks stunning in bright sunshine IMHO. The pics here don't really do it justice. It's not as lurid as Lamborghini's Verde Ithica but closer to the Viper green on the new Scirocco. The carbon side blades really look great against it and it's the first R8 I've seen that I've really thought "wow!" Smiley

WOW, that's a mean looking colour.

I'm not the biggest fan of Audi's R8 (though surely a great car), but this one looks terrific!

Go for it Smiley you won't regret it.  The color is very unique, I like it.

I had to laugh at the Kermit pic Smiley It's actually not as much of a Kermit shade as the Lamborghini green but it does toatally transform the look of the car making it appear lower and wider for some reason. It certainly got a lot of positive attention and two young mums pulled up next to me in a parking lot and asked if they could take pics as they thought it was stunning. Can't make up my mind that I really need it but I am sorely tempted.

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

Hi Isuk, if they are going to give it to you for a steal then do it, otherwise wait a couple months after the V10's release, then those prices for the V8's will surely tank.

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

    +1....v10 it is.

R8 4.2 FSI is a great sportscar. Period. YES, you can use it daily. I do not know how much mls are on that car just, here are few tips from me:

-on first 5000km or so(3000mls) oil consumption is noticable. Always keep fresh pack of oil if you Audi dealer is not close to your home/work. After 10000km or so oil consumption will drop-this is remark of all high reving V8 and V10 engines from Audi/Lambo.

-tires. Always use Pirelli P Zero R01 or Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 R01. They are designed for R8(little bit different mixture then N1 or N0 for Porsches). Pirelli's are better.

-brakes. They are little bit overservoed at first. You will get used to it, on some R8 they could be noisy-I personally do not care since they are really good(standard brakes).

-fuel consumption is on the high side unless you drive very carefully(throttle)

-since you have pretty good experience with mid engine sportscar warning about the way how mid engine sportscar needs to be driven fast is no need for you.

If you have any other question just ask.

My advice? If your friend is that one I am thinking about(Audi UK) then go for it! Make good deal for potential trade-in for R8 5.2 FSI(UK intro is in mid May) if you will be interested(keep your options open). Honestly, that Java Green looks totally awsome! ...and it is manual!

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

Thanks kreso, your info is much appreciated. I found the manual box a joy to use and enjoyed the open gate. The brakes felt strong and I noticed the throttle gives instant revs but you quickly get used to this and it becomes unoticeable. The car felt fairly quick and very sure footed on the road. It's a nice, useable sportscar. It felt like a Porsche with some soul to me - the result of a very well sorted chassis with a touch of excitement thrown in. The seating position feels quite high which makes parking much easier than the Gallardo or F430. I only went to drive it out of curiosity as the R8 has never strongly appealed to me previouly but in this colour it looks stunning. The engine/exhaust makes a great noise as well. This particular car has done 1,600 miles (approx 2,600 kms) and was registered in January. I think I can get it for around 14% below the original list price which doesn't seem bad when looking around at other cars on the market.

As for the V10 I appreciate your sentiments guys but it's £20k more and not really necessary as I've got my Scuderia for when real performance is required Smiley

I'm just not sure I really need it with the other cars I have. I'm going to test a Ferrari California tomorrow so will wait to make a decision. Not comparable cars at all but I can't justify buying both - I'd be in serious trouble at home if I did Smiley

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

If you can afford the California and you already have the Scuderia, get the California and not the R8. Just my personal opinion.

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

I had a California on order RC and went to the factory launch. I decided to cancel my slot and keep my 430 spider instead when things went pear shaped in the financial sector but recent events there are more encouraging now. My original plan was to take a California as a replacement for my 430 spider and GranTurismo but my heart ruled my head and I thought two cars were better than one Smiley I'll see if my views change after the drive.

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

I would go for a R8 - but only after negociating a huge price drop since that color might be difficult to resale & enjoy it double. In Switzerland prices have dropped significantly lately for R8's - you can get them with low km/milage for +40% less that NP.

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

IMHO a 14% discount isn't very much in today's used car market in the UK. It isn't even equal to the VAT paid by the original buyer when he drove it off the dealer's forecourt. I think 30% off is more realistic.

Re: Thinking of buying this Audi R8

I love the R8 - only after having it for a couple of days for an extended test drive. I drove, LHD, RHD, R-Tronic and Manual. The RHD manual is the best I think. I have both LHD and RHD cars since I drive overseas a lot. Seriously great car I prefer it to the Gallardo!!

The more you drive it the more you like it, when it first came out I was offered a test drive and

turned it down but my younger brother convinved me to at least try it - now its one of my favourite cars!

If you can get 30% off easy I'm sending you in to bat for me with Audi UK as it's their car Smiley

In all seriousness though expecting to get 30% off is a bit out there. That would mean getting an £86k car for just over £60k. If you can find a similarly spec'ed R8 that's 3 months old for £60k I'll have two Smiley

The car is the only one in that colour in the UK and it doesn't seem there are many (if any) in other countries either. I don't think resale will be an issue due to the colour being rare. In my experience that actually helps as used buyers often look for something different on this type of car to make it stand out.
