Re: GT3 Newbie on the track - report and pics from Leipzig

    Aviator:

    I have a couple questions:

    • It was great to enjoy a hot lap with Jan Seyffarth behind the wheel of the GT3. When I entered the passenger seat he grinned and said: you GT3 guys are hard to impress by sheer speed, so I decided to show you something new - not the ideal line, but the race line
Did he mean turning in late, in order to be on the power much earlier? Or the race line to overtake and prevent overtaking?

    • [...] the track started to look like a rubber battlefield even on the ideal line (especially at the Loews corner). With the unavoidable pick up on the tires the car felt terrible [...]
So the tires picked up chunks of rubber, large enough to cause vibration? wow Smiley. At least a few people were running on soft slicks then?

Hi Costas - IMO turning in late is the safety line for us amateurs (no trail braking, late apex). Jan showed the opposite, which should prevent to get overtaken by others. Of course it's not neccessarily the fastest line (just like a F1 driver never clocks the best laptimes when he tries to "cover" his line in order to keep in front of a chaser), but it helps to stay ahead until one of the drivers makes a mistake Smiley

I don't think that anybody was on Slicks - some street tires must have suffered terribly Smiley Yes, I got massive vibrations - front left picked up a chunk which had the size of almost a half postcard Smiley

When I receive the pics from the pro photographer in a couple of days I may add some more pics to the thread - perhaps he has some pics from the Loews corner showing the mess.

"equally content with the universe" - I like that SmileySmiley

@ reginos: thanks for adding the nice air view pic of the track Smiley

@ d997h: yes, you're right - AFAIK it's the first time that the Sport Driving Schools offers such trackdays (btw: also in Leipzig). I will decide on short notice only as my calender is a "moving target" Smiley

    Porsche-Jeck:

I did some 4,000 km with the baby meanwhile (thereof 850 km NoS/Leipzig) - the engine used 0.8 L oil and the low fuel thirst on the Autobahn is unexpected: 500 km @ 130 km/h average on our way home means that you need some high speed sectors to compensate for the restricted and/or busy legs on a Monday morning. The car used 13.2 L/100 km only.

     Smiley

This is as low as I got with my TTS on my recent 700 km trip where I average 140 km/h with a top speed of 210 km/h. Smiley

@ Matt: you must be an excellent driver if you kept up with most of the GT cars in the cab Smiley

That can't be it and was not what I was trying to say. With just a couple of trackdays over the last years, I'm still a beginner. It was rather meant to underline that the guys with the meanest cars are more often than not the ones that are rather not so "mean" on the track. However, I thank you for believing in me anyway.  Smiley

Do you have a problem with Mr. I ? SmileySmiley Actually it was the Junior driving the car - IMO a rather nice chap and always playing fair on the track Smiley Sometimes too much of a Gentleman - more via PM Smiley

Not a bad driver - during 50% of the stints he "got me" (of course the car is modded...), during the other 50% I could stay ahead Smiley

Though best drivers in our group were the GT2-guy and a yellow 996 GT3 with LA-.... numberplate Smiley

    Looking forward to May Smiley

Great write-up PJ. The photo of the Walter  R. signature on the gas flap is priceless! It's a pleasure to read about your experiences.

Re: GT3 Newbie on the track - report and pics from Leipzig

P-J, seriously good report, I read every inch if your experience! I did the Cayenne turbo experience last year and was extremely impressed what the CTT was able to do (OK in the hands of the young german instructors). Next is the GT3.........

I assume that all the cars were customer owned? As I am in the ME it would be impossible to take my car with me. A family holiday is on the cards in the next few months (UK, Scotland, Holland) and I am seriously interested to do porsche level 1 driver training, maybe we can pull a team together for July in Leipzig? anyone interested?

    Cheers,

    Mark

Hi P-J, I noticed some wet conditionsSmiley? We had a Meet and Greet drive this weekend and we had to drive through several wadies (imagine driving your GT3 through 25cm of flowing water, no problem !!Smiley)

Hi Mark, glad you liked the report and the pics Smiley Actually you can get a loaner. No GT3 though, but FL 997/997 S (both RWD or AWD). The price is around 500 € / day (including fuel Smiley).
My wife enjoyed some pax-laps with the CTT in the hands of an instructor last year (both on the track and the off road circuit). Corkscrew in the Cayenne must be quite impressive Smiley

Your wadie pic is great Smiley Maybe with the GT3 FL equipped with the liftsystem you can wade through 50 cm deep water Smiley

I wish you all the best for your trip to Europe. Let me know if you eventually visit the Cologne/Düsseldorf region or the Eifel Smiley

Excellent report! Did the same training in Spain, but has nothing to do with the one in Leipzig. I may someday do the G-Force one!

Bank organising the Saturday 16th May!

That Suzuka S was the best, not surprising though that someone went through it, once or twice I ended up far too close to the 2nd S's kurb!

I don't know the circuit, but I would have thought that if you didn't actually hit the kerb then you were not too close. Smiley

Believe me, if you drift (encompasses overstreer as well ) so close as to totally mess up the 2nd S entry / apex, believe me you are doing some wrong... but fun!!!
