This are great new pictures! Amazing how much camo there is on top. I still dont believe that we will see a hard-roof, Ii'm convinced that the soft just got more hard framing underneath as before.

I'm wondering what they hide underneath that rear. All of the Mules have this enormous spoiler. Is it just the new extandable and foldable spoiler underneat why they make just a hype around it?

The rear is so much longer, isnt it?

And - what is this on top of the tyre?

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

The perfectly stretched roof is suspicious of what lies beneath!

Also I've read somewhere something about active aerodynamics so perhaps more extendable parts. Not to the Veyron extent but perhaps more than the foldable spoiler.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Isn't the rear line of the car on these last three pics unusually high? Also, this rear section seems rather "flat"?

I am referring to the part where the roof material stops and metal starts...

maybe its not the Turbo? I mean it might be to early to Test the Turbo, since it normally comes out later in the Model cycle. Also the side vents are fake. Maybe its just the next 911?

It is not the Turbo Smiley

Some soloporsche.com forumers saw it last week:

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

It does seem to look like retractable hardtop. 2+2 when top is up and 2 seater when the top down.....

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

There is no metal folding roof on that car, it's all cloth. Given the complexicty of the up coming aerodynamic spoiler at the back + the engine + super chargers, there is no room for a folding metal roof. The roof of an SL folded down eats up the majority of the boot space and granted that the 911 has a longer roof, it would need a monsterously large rear end to accomodate a metal cabrio roof.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

who told you it was going to have a super charger?

My bad, was suppossed to say turbo chargers. Here's a prime example of how big the rear end would be if a wannabe 2+2 like the 911 had a metal folding roof:

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

In addition to weight and storage issues, engine cooling would be a major obstacle with a folding metal roof.  My guess--a practical joke by the engineers to see the reactions in web forums.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Guys, the soft top looks to me like a standard 911 cab soft top, simply not many times opened and closed, hence the lack of significant crease lines, but a standard 911 cab soft top nevertheless.

Turbo-Al, check the hard lines and metal structure you see on the current cabs. This roof is much smoother. I guess, they just perfectionized that roof - nothing more!

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

You must be blind to thing the soft top is the same,as the old car.Lets wait and see,I'm still of the opinion, that is a hard top, the car is much longer and there all the space in the world for one.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

I didn't really read into all the details, but it seems lik porsche filed a patent for what seems to be a metal folding roof: Patent.

If you click "mosaics", you'll find more sketches.

Thanks for the post Joost Smiley

If Porsche really manages a metal hard roof to be fitted in the little space in the back of a 911, that would be break through.

As is the soft top hardly fits there( almost on top the engine in the rear) Smiley

Rossi, After looking at these elongated 911 spy shots and the rumor of 928 resurrection I kind of wonder if these test mules are in fact the 2-door Panamera in disguise? Smiley

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

    Joost, EXCELTENT CATCH!!!

I read the whole document and checked the drawings. This is clearly a Carrera roof. And if you see how close it folds together its amazing.

So finally we will see a foldable hardroof on the new 911. Question is, if it will be covered with textile or not. But anyhow, this thing will be so light, that you really have to question if you are going for a Coupe or a Convertible.

    GREAT NEWS!

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

hehe, Lars, exelTENT is not the word anymore, now the cloth is gone, is it?!? :D

However, neunelf's post has got me thinking... the lines don't seem to match. However, the rather sharp bend right to the number 54 looks to be a result of the shape of one of the panels, not a result of the driving mechanism, so it still could be.

When you read the text, it seems like the patent is filed back in '06... does it really take THAT long to develop? When did the 997 and the 997 mk2 come out?

    Edit:

If you read the below section, it seems (only) to be a way of keeping the flexible plastic rear window in desired shape, so no wrinkles or folds. However, it does mention that the roof can be either colth or hard material.:

"In this context, the folding top is understood as meaning a top in which at least some roof sections are manufactured from a foldable material, for example a fabric, which is kept in the desired shape with the aid of the top linkage. Individual roof sections can also have a fixed, in particular, shell-like configuration, the shell or parts thereof being composed of metal, plastic or else of glass or another transparent material."
