F1 Legend: Jackie Stewart on BBC Four (Sat-11-Apr)

    "JACKIE STEWART: THE FLYING SCOT"

(Saturday 11th April at 19:00 BST on BBC Four: 90 minute documentary)

    Jackie-Stewart_BBC-Four

"Sir Jackie Stewart is one of Britain's all time great sporting personalities - winner of three Formula 1 world championships, 27 grand prix and ranked as one of the ten greatest racing drivers of all time. With his black cap and sideburns, he became an unmistakable icon in the glorious era of style, glamour and speed of the 1960s and 70s.

Venturing beyond the world of motor sport, this documentary is an insight into the triumphs and tragedies of Stewart's eventful life, and includes contributions from friends and colleagues such as Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Sean Connery, Murray Walker and Edsel Ford, as well as the last ever interview with the late Ken Tyrrell, without whom Stewart's career might have taken a very different turn.

Produced by Stewart's youngest son Mark, the film is enriched with family photographs, home movies and scrapbooks kept by Lady Helen Stewart that document her husband's career."

Thanks great video and pure driving!

British F1 has not had a successor to JYS. I don't count J.Hunt, N. Mansell and L. Hamilton in the same league especially as far as personality and sportsmanship is concerned.

Thanks for the heads-up! Smiley I'll try to watch that.

PS: It occured to me when watching that video clip that, if that had been a Datsun F1 car Jackie Stewart was driving back then, Nissan would now be claiming a 2' 23" Nürburgring lap time for it.   Smiley

    Haha, yes, maybe.

But I'm really curious what the real F1 lap times were these days?

Thanks - I'm looking forward to seeing this on TV tomorrow

The lap record was 6'58.6", achieved in 1975, ironically by Niki Lauda who had his famous crash there in the 1976 GP. He was the only driver ever to get below 7 minutes so far.

It's only a matter of time now until Suzuki-san beats that time.  Smiley

It clashes with "Dr Who" and "Henry V111", but it's repeated later at 1.15am on the same channel so will Sky+ it then.

    Many thanks for the info...

The Jackie Stewart documentary for BBC Four provides a great insight into the history of F1 and provides some real perspective...

    ...an amazing era in motorsport!

Re: F1 Legend: Jackie Stewart on BBC Four (Sat-11-Apr)

That really was an excellent program!  Smiley

It did incidentally also highlight the differences between F1 in the late 60s / early 70s and today. People took a very "cavalier" attitude to safety back then, as witnessed by the death toll, but on the plus side, F1 was a sport back then and not just a business as it is now. Smiley

Hey Fritz - What about Stephan Bellof's time of 6'11?

Re: F1 Legend: Jackie Stewart on BBC Four (Sat-11-Apr)

On www.nurburgring.de the Lauda laptime is listed for a track length of 22.835km whereas the Bellof time for 20.832km.

However, Lauda average speed at 196.383km/h, Bellof at 202.073km/h. I don't know the nature of these 2 kms, if they would add to Bellof's time enough to drop his average speed?

Same time, same channel next week there's a special on Jim Clark.

That should also be worth watching..

Porsche 956 laps the Nurburgring in 6 minutes 41 seconds...

(Saturday 18th April at 19:00 BST on BBC Four: 60 minute documentary)

    F1-Legend_Jim-Clark

"Portrait of Jim Clark, one of the most talented and intriguing characters of the 1960s. From unlikely beginnings on a farm in Scotland, the introverted and media-shy Clark emerged to become the most successful racing driver of his time, and forged a reputation as one of the all-time great heroes of motor sport.

Using previously unseen archive footage, testimonials from friends, family and former colleagues, the film tells the extraordinary but tragic story of an enigmatic racing legend."

Uniquely, he won the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 hours; he won the Monaco Grand Prix five times and was a great raconteur and a dashing figure with a keen eye for the ladies.

My father once had the pleasure of meeting Graham Hill, and said he was most amusing!

At the end of the documentary about Graham Hill, I didn't hear anything about another one of these programmes so I guess that's the end of the series...

Re: F1 Legend: Graham Hill on BBC Four (Sat-25-Apr)

It could be the last episode featuring F1 Drivers, but the series continues same time next week (Sat. 7pm BBC4)

It’s called “In Search of Speed”…This episode is entitled ‘The Battle of Bonneville’

A documentary recalling the successive attempts by Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons, during the 60’s, to break the land speed record.

Could be worth a watch…. I think the series then continues for at least another week after that.
