My boost actuators stuck again ! ONLY .2 Bar !!

Last June I suffered almost total loss in boost.

The dealer replaced both turbos under warranty, the controllers got corroded up !

Now a repeat performance  9 months after the new turbos, only .2 bar max again !

The 2 year warranty ran out mid January this year.

HOW DO I STAND FOR A WARRANTY CLAIM ?? This is a repeating fault !

Has anyone else suffered from this problem ??

The car is used all year round in Sweden so there is a lot of salt on the roads but a Porsche is an all year round arctic tested car !!

Re: My boost actuators stuck again ! ONLY .2 Bar !!

Gary was suffering with this last week on our drive through the Cotswolds.

0.2bar boost, temporarily solved by just restarting the engine.

His car is in the dealers right this second having it looked at.  I will let you know the outcome.

Have you had the Turbos lubricated as part of the Porsche recall/campaign recently?

That's exactly what I thought when I read Chopper's post.

Re: My boost actuators stuck again ! ONLY .2 Bar !!

I have just had my Turbo in for a turbo check yesterday (Car is 11 months old; 15.000 miles; all year use) after almost complete loss of pressure during a quick trip in Germany.

Turbo's were lubricated in January 2009 when car was in for a rear spoiler mechanism repair. Despite this they were stuck again last week. So lubricating the Turbo's is no cure for cars running in winter conditions! Most probably the turbo problem is caused by winter/salt conditions here in Holland over the winter period. Turbo's are placed in a way that they get spray of the rear wheels. Car will go back next week for a change of both Turbo's, although done under warranty OPC admits that this is not a cure for the problem. I will swap my car the day it runs out of warranty in 12 months time; unless Porsche will come up with a final cure for this problem I will not go back to a 911 turbo again.

For the amount of depreciation which that move would involve in the current market you could easily buy yourself a car lift and a can of WD40. Smiley

Ha, ha Fritz good point. You sound like my wife who's always trying to bring some form of reason to my emotional decisions!

All joking apart; my Turbo's have now apparently reached a stage of malfunctioning where they can not be lubricated enough to function normally anymore! (Not even with a full can of WD40).

To be honest I told my OPC about changing after 12 months from now in order to "motivate" them to come up with an acceptable solution f.i. a free extended warranty on the Turbo's for another 12 months after the guarantee runs out.

Absolutely no offense to your good wife is intended if I say that I still have some misgivings about being told that I sound like her!   Smiley

I like your idea about extending the warranty on your turbos by having them changed just before the car's regular warranty runs out.  Smiley

Re: My boost actuators stuck again ! ONLY .2 Bar !!

What I gather is that the turbines are not maintenance free items, as most owners assume.

Is this need for maintenance and systematic lubrication ( in certain climates/road conditions) pointed out by Porsche in the handbook or Dealer maintenance schedules? If not, this is a great omission and Porsche should be pushed to suffer the cost IMO.

If I remember correctly, a Swedish or Canadian rennteamer recently drew our attention to the fact that a TSB had been issued advising that there was a potential risk of cars used in winter conditions (including salted roads) suffering from this problem. I'm not sure if the TSB only applied to cars built in a limited time window.

I asked the OPC out of interest, although weather condiitons here wouldn't cause such a problem, and they told me it applied to certain VINs only. I don't know, perhaps they came up with a solution on later cars

Re: My boost actuators stuck again ! ONLY .2 Bar !!

I am not sure whether this is a VIN-problem. I will post again later this month once the new Turbo's are fitted. If exactly the same turbo's are put on than this has nothing to do with certain VIN's.

I think we are looking at a design flaw, which IMHO is not easily corrected other than through a changed maintenance scheme.

As far as an OPC goes; not all of them are really honest when thinks can possibly go wrong. I also think a lot of drivers will not notice the flaw as even with limited functioning turbo's the car is still very quick. Also the Turbo's still reach proper boost, but the "lag" is much bigger. My OPC technical engineer noticed straight away that the turbo's were not working properly as  he experienced the increased turbo lag on a short testdrive.

I will also try to post a picture of a 997 turbocharger later on to show the actual part that goes wrong. As you will then be able to see this is strictly a mechanical problem; nothing high-tech.

I thought the initial posted problem is that the car lost boost? Are there different ways that this problem presents itself?

Re: My boost actuators stuck again ! ONLY .2 Bar !!

I had a chat this morning with a Porsche technician (who is my cycling mate) and according to him the problem arises on the 997 because the turbines have variable pitch vanes and because of the location of the turbines a lot of dirt and condensation accumulates that doesn't allow the vanes to move freely after a while, when the car is driven in a wet climate.

He said this can be avoided by cleaning the area and lubricating the turbines every so often as required. However, this is not in the official Porsche maintenance programme!

If I lived in a climate conducive to such malfunction I would ask my technician to have a look and lubricate during the winter at least once.

for all i know it is VIN related. at least that's what my OPC said.

Yes, that's what I've known.  But even in the case of the cars within the relevant VINs it is a matter of preventive maintenance to avoid the possible damage by acting as above.

Why it's VIN related? Maybe the design was changed in some detail or perhaps the turbine manufacturer.

Re: My boost actuators stuck again ! ONLY .2 Bar !!

     RESULT !!!

A week ago I left my car at the local Porsche dealer in Sweden.........and they told me an official Porsche technician was visiting the next day....well......

The technician agreed that my turbos (ref, the boost actuators were corroded and siezing up ) needed changing to the latest spec turbos which have since been modified in production in the past year or so .(since they were changed last May).

He said This WILL be covered under goodwill warranty as Porsche knew about this problem some time ago !
