Despite dressed in black it feels larger in size.

I suspect they added more room for the rear passengers and a bigger engine. Same boxer engine but 4.0l I bet.

The longer wheelbase will also create a bigger difference between the Cayman and the 911.

More than tyres , the strange things are inside the rear wheel-well (s) .  What Porsche said , and what we can see on this pics. , next 911 will have active : aerodynamics , suspension &  ride height .. and I think rear wheel steering .

In the last picture, you can see that there are some dampers or actuators placed inside the wheel.

I can imagine this being for several purposes:
    1. Rear wheel steering
    2. KERS-like system
    3. e-braking
    4. e-wheel? (seen pictures of prototype wheels that were crammed with systems, providing syspension, engine, brakes, etc.

Looks like porsche is looking at some very interesting technology for the next 911 to say the least.

Does that extra stuff in the last picture increase unsprung mass?

No .  They are all attached to the body / rear sub-frame .

That would be a sensation in a sports car. KERS in Porsche turbo (with sports chrono package) after bracking and pushing sport button -> 80-120 km/h in less then 0 seconds! Porsche would call it predictive speed, hope that Intel don´t have a patent on this like predictive statement execution or so. Even Einstein would like it :)

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

As you all know, it is currently rumored that Porsche will develop a LMP1 car for the 2010/2011 season. Furthermore, it is rumored that it will be a hybrid. If this is the case, then it will have a KERS system, however, the KERS system for sportscar racing (under the ACO) can only be used for fuel saving, and will not have any influence on power.

Given the above, if Porsche are developing a version of the KERS system, it will differ from the F1 style KERS, and so it is unlikely that we will see the power boost version anytime soon.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

    actually they will call it:

    PPSP

Porsche Predictive Speed Plus :) as it will come with another ugly wart (optional cost) on the roof console....or on the hood a la Pontiac GTO.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

you now have a lot of different combinations:

    SC/P one watch

PPS one watch not from Pattek or so - now from Varta :)

SC/P and PPPS - you got four watches on the dashboard two you can see only from the two front seats and two only from the rear seats (because 991 has more leg space in the rear)

Actually I don´t think there is nothing special about the rear wheels in the pictures discussed before...(I mean the ones with the close up of the rear wheel) To me it looks justlike a normal multy link rear suspension. And you can see those pieces because there is no inner wheel arch cover.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Geez, the car seem to be as thick as the Continental GT.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

i guess that roof spoiler is only there on the test mules as to provide the downpressure that is lost from taping the rear wing. i do not think it will be there on the final version.

The car looks longer than the current one.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

    Thanks very much!

And...What is the wheel-base to overall length ratio, someone please? And what are the wheel positions relative to the overall length?

Related---where is the engine relative to the 997?

    Therefore likely F/R mass ratio?

Assuming that rims on 998 are 20"  ( they look like that ) , my best calculation  is :

    wheel-base   : 2443 mm         ( 997.2     2350 mm )    + 93 mm

    overall lenght : 4320 mm        ( 997.2     4435 mm )     - 115 mm
