2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Hi guys - it's that time again - the start of another F1 season Smiley

So many new rules (no testing during the season), new technology (KERS), spec changes (much less use of aerodynamics, engines must last double what they did in 2008 and we're back on slick tyres) - together these changes will really mix things up so that the established pecking order between the teams could be turned upside down Smiley

This race in Melbourne will be so open - I think the leading contenders will be Brawn, Ferrari, Renault, BMW Sauber. The next chasing group could include Toyota, Williams, Red Bull, Toro Rosso and McLaren. Force India looks like it will be some way back.

I expect this season to be very competitive and very, very hard fought. It could again go right down to the wire. I am really looking forward to this season! Smiley

Yes! But how will they really play out?

Looking very much forward !!! We have organized the 'not to be missed' meetings as most of the races are inside office hours (hi hi hi)

McLaren improved car a lot on last testing in Jerez, but according to Haud they are still behind. But I would bet they are sandbagging and in Melbourne they will be on front with BMW and Ferrari.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Not long to go now guys

@shakal: I think McLaren has improved enough at Jerez to enter the midfield. I doubt that they have found the speed to match Ferrari or BMW Sauber. But, we are just guessing - all will be revealed in the next few days!

I was sad to hear today that McLaren might not be bluffing after all and still needs some time until they can compete.

This weekend will show us where they really are.

You really caught my attention with that one! In 2008 the engine had to last for two races. From what I have read, each driver now gets eight engines for the seventeen race season. Somewhere in the season an engine must last for three races, but otherwise it is still two races per engine. For a moment there I was expecting to see all kinds of engine failures.Smiley

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Here the results from Friday's 1st and 2nd Practice Sessions:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/results/7919658.stm

As expected, Brawn, Williams and Toyota (who are all running the controversial rear diffuser design) were at the top of the laptimes lists.

It's so refreshing to see previously less successful teams do so well  While Ferrari, BMW, Renault and McLaren are all struggling badly

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Hpefully it will be competitive and give more teams a shot.

After watching some practice though I have to say it is not a feast for the eyes. These are the ugliest F1 cars in memory, the front wings resemble snow plows. The ING renault takes the prize with the bony engine cover. These cars are truly ugly.

The start will look like a school of hammerhead sharks.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

i'm very that slicks are back, but i'm a bit worry about our swiss driver. well i'm sure i'll do good soon.

The Brawn team is not so bad. I guess we will have to count them in. They did good place this morning.

Well i can't wait to see the race sunday morning on my uge screen.

I'd say we shall wait untill Saturday after Q3 finishes, I'm sure Mclaren will be in the top 4, as well as Renault ( I hope, at least Smiley).

I've been watching today's trainnings and I was pretty excited, so Sunday its going to be a great GP.... CAN'T WAIT TOO!!

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

A few weeks ago I wrote that on first race McLaren will be at front and Brawn at bottom. Looks like I was completly wrong... Its very interesting, teams which were slow last year are on top this year. For McLaren, tommorow Q2 is probably the best what can happen. Start will be interesting,  teams with KERS should overtake a few cars in front of them, which doesn't have KERS.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Rosberg fastest in Saturday Practice as well! Let's see if he'll be on pole position....

Virgin will be sponsoring Brawn GP....

    Can't believe I'm awake watching F1 at 4.42am....

    So first qualifications:

    Button

    Barichelo

    Vettel

Guys this year will be a hell of a ride!!!! Smiley

Honestly I like to see this changes... it is so interesting.. Alonso 12... Hamilton 15...... And I hope the rear difusers are llegal. Fresh blod in the front row I think the FIA should let this time everything the way it is... IMO

I love the way that Ross Brawn was completely unmoved when Button snatched pole position.

Chances for Hamilton or Alonso to win tomorrow's race are below 1% IMHO.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

I am too shocked to comment... Ferrari P 7-9, McLaren P 14-15 and a Brawn 1-2... Smiley Looks like the cars with the questionable diffusers have a great advantage and that the traditional forces have fallen behind as they were concetrating on last year's title fight and not their new designs.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Hamilton to start last in Australia

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - McLaren's Lewis Hamilton will start from last place in his first race as Formula One world champion after suffering a gearbox failure in Australian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Briton, who won from pole position in Melbourne last year, did not take part in Saturday's second stage of qualifying after finishing 15th in the first session.

"A gear catastrophically failed," McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh told reporters.

"We will be changing the box so we're going to take the hit of a gearbox change so Lewis will start from 20th place tomorrow."

Under Formula One regulations, gearboxes must last four successive races with a five-place penalty on the starting grid for any unscheduled changes.

Hamilton sounded calm in the face of his worst Formula One qualifying performance.

"I don't really have a game plan, just go for it," he said. "It can't really get worse than last place so we'll do the best job from there.

"We are a bit quicker than some of the other guys in front of us and we have to make sure that we extract the best from our strategy ... its a challenge and I'm looking forward to it."

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

The new teams have yet to prove that they can drive home a full GP, but I think it's nice that everything is shaken up.

This sounds much more like a drivers championship than the fundraising championship of last years!

If the "questionable" diffusor turns out to be allowed, other teams will use it too. My guess is, that the big teams (Ferrari, McLaren, BMW) will catch up during the season.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Oh, and with Vettel, Rosberg, Glock, Heidfeld, there are some good chances for a german driver to win!

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

Does anyone of you knows who is using KERS and if so, who is using a flywheel or a battery based KERS?

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

F1 update: Toyotas excluded from Melbourne qualifying...

Both Toyota cars have been excluded from the qualifying results at the Australian Grand Prix after their cars were found to break technical rules.

    Toyota-F1-car

Toyota's Timo Glock of Germany and Italian Jarno Trulli qualified sixth and eighth but will start Sunday's race from the back of the grid. Officials said the cars had rear wings that were too flexible.

Williams are also launching a protest against the rear wings on the Red Bull and Ferrari cars.

Flexible rear wings are banned in Formula 1 because they can bring performance advantages. Because of this, the F1 technical regulations have strict stipulations about how much a wing can flex.

This is because a wing can be designed to flex in such a way as to improve the car's straight-line performance without harming its cornering capability. In such instances, the aerodynamic drag on the car reduces as the wing flexes. The wing then snaps back to their original shape as the driver slows for a corner, increasing his grip.

The FIA's decision promotes world champion Lewis Hamilton to 18th - he had dropped from 15th to last place because of a gearbox change.

Re: 2009 Australian F1 Grand Prix from Melbourne

BrawnGP cars are even heavier than others (got more fuel on board):

    JB 664.5
    RB 666.5
    SV 657.0
    RK 650.0
    NR 657.0

    (all in kg)

In a few races, I think everyone will have similar diffusors like BrawnGP got. Smiley But probably this isn't enough, gap is too big.
