    PCCB - 10,000 Miles

    I need some help in trying to determine if the service/parts department at my local dealer (a) is trying to sell me a rear set of PCCB discs to make a quick profit and if not (b) what the proper part number is for the rear carbon rear discs? My car is a MY’07 with exactly 10,000 miles and two years old.

    Supposedly there is less than 1mm left in the rear carbon discs and they need to be replaced immediately. The car has handled plenty spirited driving days Smiley

    but I am a bit shocked that the discs need to be replaced so quickly.

    If the answer is yes these need to be replaced, what is the proper part number. Is is the same part for a regular 997 with ceramics? I was under the impression that the Turbo had a different PCCB system. The replacement part I was shown at the parts department as a proper replacement had different sized Porsche decals as the one existing on the car right now.  It did not look right to me (but I am no expert).

    Thanks in advance for your help and advice on this matter… I need it before taking the plunge and spending big bucks to replace them (as suggested by the dealer).

    How many track days? The rotors are around $8k each.

    PCCB rotor (disc) wear is not measured in millimeters. Smiley

    Are you sure it's not the friction pads that the dealer wants to change. Smiley
    The pads can be expected to wear faster than the rotors. You should have had a warning light go on in the instrument panel before the pads get down to 1mm pad thickness though. 

    Did you get a warning light? If yes, the dealer is certainly right to want to change the pads.

    If you have doubts about them wanting to sell you the correct part, get them to show you the part number on the dealer's terminal for your car model and year.

    I don't understand your reference to differences between parts for Turbo and regular 911. According to your profile, you drive a 911S?

    The PCCB rotors feature "wear-indicators": as soon as the discs need replacing these indicators become visible on the discs. The indicators are basically circles with a diameter of about 1.5 cm or so. They can be noticed very easily when looking at the discs Smiley

    Thanks for your prompt response!

    fritz: mm is what I was told.  Perhaps the mechanic meant cm ("less than 1").  What they suggest changing are not the pads, but the discs.  Also, no warning light came on.
    Thanks for the terminal tip; I will check into it this way.  My profile needs updating; I drive a Turbo now.  So my Turbo vs. Carrera S PCCBs still stands.  Are they different?Smiley

    Alex:  That is what I thought... That they would last a good deal.  Anyone that you are aware that had had to change them?

    If you can see this indicators your disks are dead.

    PCCB brakes are very durable for road use with some unsprung weight advantage. However, braking performance on steel brakes is more than excellent on Porsches anyway.

    On the track ceramics dissipidate heat more efficiently but they wear fast(er).

    They are not for the economy conscious tracker!

    I have 57000km on my car (about 35000 miles) and I had my car in for service just a couple of weeks ago. No need in the near future to do anything or replace anything related to the PCCB brakes. I'm driving rather hard, but no track-days so far...

    so, this seems really weird. Btw, I have a normal Carrera S MY'05.

    I have 19 000km  or roughly 12000 miles, several track days, drive hard and no problem whatsoever with my car TT pccb equipped. At the 2y serviced dealer told me "the 4 brake pads are cooked and pad cushions too". Rotors were check and are fine. Unless your rotors have a defect I really doubt that your rotors are dead, even less if you did not go trough a set of brake pads. May be see another dealer. I drove hard enough on the road and track to go trough a set of brake with no worries. Just my own experience.
