New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is adding yet another new model to the second generation of the 911 model series: the new GT3 even more powerful, faster, and refined than its predecessor.

In developing the most sporting and dynamic road-going 911 with a normal-aspiration power unit, Porsche has applied a wide range of know-how gained in motorsport. Indeed, this is precisely why the new GT3 is truly impressive not only on the road, but also on the race track.

The new 911 GT3 is making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March, with Europe-wide sales starting in May.

The 911 GT3 offers an even higher standard above all in two key areas: performance and driving dynamics. Now the proven six-cylinder naturally-aspirated power unit develops maximum output of 435 bhp (320 kW), up 20 bhp over its predecessor. This results first and foremost from an increase in engine capacity by 200 cc to 3.8 litres and from the improved gas cycle: now not only the intake, but for the first time also the exhaust camshafts are adjusted by VarioCam.

A further important point is that, through its upgraded power and performance, the boxer engine also offers a significant increase in torque at medium engine speeds, a benefit of particular significance in everyday motoring. Clearly, this also means a further improvement in performance, the new GT3 accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and reaching 160 km/h in 8.2 seconds. Top speed is 312 km/h or 194 mph.

The second highlight in developing the 911 GT3 to an even higher standard was to further improve the car’s driving dynamics: For the first time the 911 GT3 comes with a particularly sporting variant of PSM Porsche Stability Management, offering the option to deactivate both Stability Control (SC) and Traction Control (TC) in separate steps. And to give the driver unrestricted, individual control over the driving dynamics of his car, these functions are not reactivated automatically even under the most extreme driving conditions, but only at the touch of a button.

The new GT3 offers even better grip and stability also at high speeds, specific modifications of the car’s aerodynamics increasing down-forces both front and rear to such an extent that the overall pressure pushing down the car is more than twice as great as on the former model. At the same time the new Aerodynamics Package gives the GT3 a brand-new look further accentuated by the new bi-xenon headlights, LED rear light clusters, as well as modified air intakes and outlets.

The active PASM suspension of the 911 GT3 enables Porsche’s engineers to make the springs and anti-rollbars somewhat stiffer yet again, thus ensuring even more precise handling in the PASM sports mode, while retaining appropriate roll comfort suitable for everyday use in the normal PASM mode. New, even lighter wheels in racing design with central locking and UHP (ultra-high performance) tyres now even featuring tyre pressure control round off the functional and visual enhancement of the GT3.

With driving dynamics and performance increasing to an even higher level, the brake system, following an old Porsche tradition, has been enhanced accordingly on the new 911 GT3. The brake discs now come with an even larger friction disc and an aluminium cover to reduce weight even further. Further improvement of brake ventilation, in turn, guarantees an even higher level of consistent brake power also over long periods. And as an option the GT3 comes as before with an exclusive version of PCCB ceramic brakes made specifically for this model.

Starting in autumn, the new GT3 will be available with yet another option making the car even more suitable for the race track: new and highly innovative PADM (Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount) engine bearings. These special engine mounts recognise a particularly sporting, race-like style of driving, making the normally elastic engine suspension hard and particularly resistant. This retains all the motoring comfort of the GT3 in everyday traffic, while on the race track the car is not affected by any mass forces coming from the engine, as would otherwise be the case in fast bends and on winding tracks.

Yet a further advantage is the car’s improved traction when accelerating from a standstill.

Another feature also new on the new model is the optional lift system for the front axle able to raise the ground clearance of the car for driving on bumpy surfaces or steep gradients – for example into an underground garage – at the touch of a button by 30 millimetres or almost 1.2”.

The Euro base price of the new GT3 is Euro 98,100, in Germany the retail price including value-added tax and specific national features is Euro 116,947. In the USA the GT3 will be at the dealership in October at a price of USD 112,200 (MSRP without taxes).

wow that's great but that front spoiler lip surely should be color matched to the exterior color. Nice evolution on the GT3 specific rims too but im not too sure about the new rear air intake underneath the rear wing... might be cause it's red... will look great on a darker car!

I dont know...certainly looks 'newer' than MKI, but Im not so sure about better...Maybe I need to see more pics. Upgrades sounds gooooood tho! Changes are VERY similar to 996 MI to MKII GT3 shifts, but then again thats expected hey..

On second thought....this looks hot! Just give me the old wheels...I'll probably change my mind on that too lol..

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

I have to admit that the new GT3 looks pretty good, not only on pictures but on paper too.

12.3 seconds from 0-200 kph(125 mph), this is pretty impressive for a 3.8 l 6-cyl. Boxer engine equipped car at almost 1500 kg weight(EC standard incl. driver, etc.).

I actually think that the GT3 MkII is by far the best value right now in the Porsche model program, with the exception of the lower priced new Cayman S maybe.

Am I correct in assuming that it´s quicker from 100 to 200 km/h than the Turbo?

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

This is by far my favorite 911 variant in the lineup.

And now with PSM and electronic front lift system. If I could fit rear child seats on it and I were planning to change 911 about now, this would definately be it, and for my everyday use.

As to the looks, damn, even the MKII rear lights look good on this thing.

I fully agree, very nice car and the price tag is justified.

Not as expensive as a Turbo but with a similar performance(on the track very likely better), not bad at all. I just wish Porsche would offer a four-seater GT3 option but I suppose they don't want to harm 997 Carrera sales.

My second favorite 911 is the 997 Carrera S with sport suspension and LSD.

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

Just out of the look, this GT3 is the most beautiful 911 ever for me. From the performance its in another world which I wouldnt need, but the look - wow, so beautiful!

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

Performance is above all our needs but the driving experience the GT3 gives I think can be still appreciated, its high reving atmospheric engine with no lag and exiting character, its lighter weight and more agility that the Turbo, its sporty handling and steering, its aggresive looks, etc... for me this is THE 911.

The reason I choose the Carrera S with sport susp and LSD is because while its not even close to a GT3, its the closest thing in the model line up, with PSM, acceptable ride height and rear seats, since I use and enjoy the 911 for everyday all year driving (wether its raining hard, commuting using city undeground parkings, or carry my daughter in the back in trips, etc). Now with thei MK-II GT3, the only thing the GT3 still doesn't have for me is a rear seats version, the rest is there now, but as RC said maybe its because the don't want to harm Carrera sales, I for one would be picking this over a CarreraS-20mm.

Carlos, this is also what I am thinking about... shame that we wouldn't get our GT3 in Spain homologated for the rear seats. Driving without the homologation would put our drivers license in jeopardy... on top of voiding the insurance.

    Shame!

    0-100 = 4.1s

    0-200 = 12.3s

    So 100-200 = 8.2s

    A stock 997.1 Turbo does 100-200 in 8.4s

So yes, faster than a Turbo!!

Old 997.1 figures were 9.7s for the GT3 and 9.0s for the GT3RS.  So that's SOME JUMP!

Re: New Porsche 997 GT3 Mk II - Official Info & Photos

I am sorry, I don't get that jump - surely can't be right!!

    The 997 Cargraphic GT3 465PS (1393kg) does 100-200 in 8.1s.  That's a power to weight ratio of 0.33 PS/kg.

The 997.2 GT3 weights 1470kg with a driver and has 435PS, so a power to weight ratio of 0.30 PS/kg.

...and there is only 0.1s difference 100-200 with more weight and less horses????

    Something is fishy here.

Carlos, I know of some guys in Germany who fitted their GT3s with rear seats with TÜV approval. Not sure about the details but if you want I can ask. Of course I've no clue about the legal requirements in Spain.

GT3 is the choice of the driving enthusiast - worth every cent Smiley

Thanks P-J, I have seen a picture of it here in the forum, did you post it? I had downloaded it to my hard drive at the time in case I needed it on the future ;), though not for the short future though. Also I'm afraid that would be a nightmare to certify in Spain I think Smiley

Carlos - I think you could retrofit rear seats and belts if you wanted to (shouldn't be too hard).

    Looks like a great car!

For me the only thing that's missing is the $112,200 USDSmiley

    Atzporsche:
wow that's great but that front spoiler lip surely should be color matched to the exterior color.

The front spoiler lips have always been black as standard on the GT3. They have to be very low for best aerodynamic performance, so they tend to get damaged. Scuff marks on black lips are like duelling scars to be worn with pride, but start to look pretty hideous on painted lips.

Also, unpainted black lips are relatively affordable as spares. Painted ones start to get expensive to replace as a regular service item.

I don't know for sure, but I would bet they're using the same crank (stroke) and increased the bore - otherwise I don't see how a 3.8L could rev to 8,500rpm...

But the last few lines of the official release will be important to many: the new optional front lift (a la Gallardo) will help many who cannot drive a GT3 because they can't park it where they live/work - Porsche has been listening to these complaints, and I have never understood why manufacturers have been so hesitant to put in lift mechanisms on the lowest perfornance cars, that make people's lives easier without harming performance.  So - if you get the lift, there should be much less front lip damage. A fantastic car !!!! Smiley   These new little features will make the car even more apealing to many. And the performance ,  seems amazing.

I am not sure if THIS is the last ' basic' Gt3 and will be the future icon, or if it has already too many electronics ( in that case the 997.1 Gt3 will be the icon) as the 991 Gt3 might be very different ( no Gt1 block, DFI, PDK, mooving front and back spoiler, etc..... )

The last basic GT3 is the 996 RS, but I also think this 997.2 GT3/RS would be the last GT1 block.

I feel really happy with the 3.8 GT1 engine in this car, can't wait for the RS. That will be a keeper!
