Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Penske Porsche has just had transmition failure after 17H of racing.

It was the fastest car on the track (1:41.5) and has led for the most laps (191).

    A real shame!!!

Now its up to the Brumos Porsches to sieze the day!

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Won by 0.167 secs after 24 hours! Incredible!

This David Donohue must be the real "iceman", holding Montoya to second place after the final 40 minutes of such a close duel.

Who needs the artificial world of F1?

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Yes, even this is better than F1,but....

Unfortunately the GA is owned by NASCAR and as you may know, they are particularly fond of yellow flags.

A new record for yellow flags was set in yesterdays race - (New record for the Daytona 24H) and that is the main reason why there were 4 cars on the same lap after 24H of racing. (they think nothing of throwing a yellow to get the cars bunched up again).

However.....The cars are pretty well matched in power, weight and trim and even without the ridiculous use of the yellows, it would still have been very , very exciting!

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Is the engine used by Porsche a 4 liter Flat Six?

How close is it to RSR's?

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

The engine used is essentially the same as the 09 RSR (4.0L) but less restricted.

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Porsche head of motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. “The last Daytona victory for Porsche was six years ago and it’s quite remarkable that then principally the same 911 engine was powering the winning car that is now in the Daytona Prototype of Brumos Racing. There’s nothing like a six-cylinder boxer engine.”

I can't stand the looks of those cars.Smiley  Matter of fact, I don't like the concept of Grand AM.  They restrict technology just like NASCAR, oh, the same people own it.  Let me see UGLY cars and restricted technology = I won't even turn the TV on when they show.  Let the best man win, like LeMans series.  Ferrari came back to beat Porsche last few years after Porsche dominated and can we say cheers to Audi for all the technology that is now in their cars that first came from dominating the LMP 1 sereis.  Race on Sunday, use the technology on Monday.

I hate to break it to you but Porsche beat Ferrari in ALMS (which is at a higher level than LMS). Not only were the Porsches out numbered in the LMS , they were also not running on development tires unlike the Ferrari.

As for Audi Technology: The Audi LMP1 for the last couple of years , was a diesel, unlike the LMP2 Porsche.
If you refereing to DFI, you should know that Porsche pushed that technology further by becoming the first DFI engine to go past 10,000 RPM
Please do'nt compare Audi's racing heritage to that of Porsche.Smiley  (Rememebr the Porsche + Audi on the racing Porsche's of the 70's?)

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Another couple of points: Please remember that Audi came to LMP1 as BMW and all other manufacturers were pulling out! In fact, Audi has only had Peugeot as a rival manufacturer in LMP1 , and that has only been over the last two years.

Also remember that the RS Spyder LMP2 beat the Audi LMP1  with alarming frequency in the 2007 ALMS, somuch so that the ACO felt the need to tighten the LMP2 rules in order to castrate the RS Spyder so that it would'nt upset the "apple cart".

The engine that is used by the GA cars is based on the 911 GT3 RSR , so it has nothing to do with Audi technology.

Well, it is obvious that you are a Porsche fan ( as am I ) but what you did not say is that the reason that Porsche beat Audi is because they were restricted on air intake and fuel tank capacity.  That is the reason that Porsche could beat Audi and my point is that Audi sells more cars internationaly than Porsche could ever dream of.  They brought more technology to the standard car than any other manufactuer in the last few years.  Grand Am does nothing for advanced technology and only punishes their participants if they try.

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Sorry but there were no little  restrictions on the diesel air intake. The LMP2's were constantly reduced. were constantly r They reduced the fuel tank becuase there is more energy per Liter of Diesel then there is in the same amount of gasoline.

The diesel rules were by far , the most favorable rules ever designed by the ACO, and that is exactly why you did not see other manufacturers (besides Peugeot who had a vested interest in selling diesel cars) develop a LMP1.

This is also the reason that the ACO have now changed the diesel rules for 2011.

No one is defending GA. It is what it is.

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

I have heard the DP and GT3 Porsche engines are the Split Block GT1. Anyone know the details (displacement, max rpm)?

    Thx,

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

BTW there was a rumor awhile back that the LMP P1 Audi R8 was designed by Porsche for Audi and the agreement did not allow Porsche to race against the R8 for a specifc period...thus the period when Porsche had no factory ALMS cars. When the agreement ran out Porsche entered with the RS Spyder and Audi with the R10. Not sure if this is all true but the time line fits.

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

I have never heard that one.

What I heard was that Porsche in exchange for the joint development of the Cayenne/Taureg project  with VW, agreed not to race their LMP1 car (that was already undergoing testing) so that Audi could go to Le Mans with their R8.

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

I'll stick my neck out there and defend GA. Yes the cars are fat and ugly (not to mention not terribly quick). And yes, tech is restricted, and too many yellows, blah blah blah. The fact is we just saw a four car battle into the last hour of a 24-hour race, and a close 2 car battle to the finish with a winning margain of 2 tenths. Are we really that caught up in semantics of who is pushing the technology envelope the furthest to not appreciate good racing when we see it? I, for one, was glued to the tv when Montoya and Donohue were going at it toward the end. That is good racing, plain and simple.

Yes I love the tech in ALMS, and we've seen all kinds of good racing there between the Audis, Porsches, Acuras, and occasionally a Peugeot, but the fact of the matter is that all of those cars save for the Acura are gone. Dyson has a new Lola which could be a contender, but I've heard nothing about any works P1 cars for 2009 other than the placating appearance of the R15 Audi at Sebring. Unless there will be a privateer R10 (Champion perhaps) we'll have no P1, and how is that going to produce better racing than GA?

We all have to remember that while being an extremely important R & D lab for the manufacturers, as well as providing us with fodder to geek amongst ourselves about, racing is a spectator sport. Thats where the sponsorship money comes from, and unfortunately thats where the emphasis needs to be placed, particularly in these economic times. If the racing is exciting (particularly for a usually kind of bland 24H) and the spectators are happy, the governing body has done its job.

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Yes I agree with you that the racing in GA is often very exciting. The problem with the GA is (as you point out) the ugliness and speed of the cars, the "artificial" performance balancing and the frequent rule bending to suit various commercial interests. (Not that it doesn't happen in other series)

As for the ALMS - 2009 and 210 will be transition years as the new regulations come into effect in 2011.

You are correct in saying that there will be no new manufacturers for 2009 (in LMP1) besides Aston Martin. I am of the opinion that we find our selves in this "transition" period (read "mess") precisely due to the ridiculously favorable diesel rules that the ACO provided to both Audi and Peugeot in detriment to all other "traditional" top LMP class  manufacturers.

Re: Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Guys like it or not NASCAR is successful here in the USA because no car has a decisive advantage. In NASCAR the driver is more important than the car, it' Hollwood mentality. I can name a bunch of NASCAR drivers but can't tell you what car they drive. With sports cars is seems which car rather than the driver(s). Being an engineer I identify more with the car than the drivers, but that's just me!!

BTW anyone know the Porsche DP & GT3 engine details (size, rmp)?
